Is it stained or just cleared, Heavy or light(weight) soft or hard (can you push your finger nail in it)

Mel, pictures don't come through so clear when it comes to details here, but the part closest to the camera looks to me like little birdeyes, but I can only guess. If they look like little birdeyes, then it could be birdseye maple.

Kevin, it's definitely not birds eye maple. I have a guitar neck made out of it and it looks nothing like it... Mel, ask Jonny what kind of wood this is....

Thanks Rex, I could only make a guess as to what I was seeing in a small part, I get blurry or paint-by-number resolution on shading and detail.

giffy, it's not stained or cleared except for on the other side. It's not a soft wood, but not as hard as oak. It seems to be heavier than monkeypod (which i have some of), but lighter than oak. I'd ask my husband if he were here, but he's at work and I'd like to list these items for auction today. BTW, it was made in the Phillipines and sold in Hawaii, if that helps at all. Thanks all!

Rex, they are 2 vintage wall pockets, hand carved in the shape of pineapples with one having a man playing a uke and a woman holding one of those percussion things like a tamborine, in a grass skirt.

Mel, Can you post a more direct pic. showing only the grain and not the ends? can you tell if it has been stained? Have any idea where you got it from (like a different country)? And another poster suggested...can you dent it with a fingernail....heavy or light piece? Hard to tell from one pic,...but I would say you can probably eliminate maples, oaks, cherry, walnut......maybe Mahogany ?? You may try this site for your inquiry - pros and hobbiest both frequent it. If it is an exotic material...these guys may help alot. http://tinyurl.com/7auad HTH SteCo

SteCo, mahogany could be it. That's one I didn't think of. Anyway, here are some pics... p.s. my 2 year old locked my bathroom door. it's one of those locks with just the small round hole in the middle on one side, and a push button lock on the other. do you know where i'm supposed to pick it in order to unlock it? LMFAO (ohhhh yeah, whatta day )

Mel Looks like Luan (SP?) Mahogany, a lower grade of the Mahogany family. If you take a nail, and stick it in the hole , the door should unlock. Mike

Well I dunno enough about the various types of Mahogany, but it sure looks like Mahogany to me! My parents have all mahogany furniture in their bedroom - it looks just like that. Did you get your baby boy out of the bathroom yet??? Only a mother could type what you said with such calmness....kids... Carrie

LMAO!! He wasn't IN there, he just decided to lock it for me so I couldn't get in there. Door is open now. As for the wood (wook for ghost ), I think I'll go with the mahogany. If I'm wrong, which I don't think I am, I can always make the correction later on the auction page. Thank you so much everyone!
