I just wish all these people looking for someone to point a finger at about who's Fault it is would just "STFU" Every Agency is dealing with this situation the best that they can.... alot of these people have never seen this kind of Destruction in their life and will probally never see anything like it again... We all know alot of people made mistakes and were caught with their pants down.. ok we all know this... I feel like Jimbo.... unless you have been there and seen what's going on, who the Hell are we to judge the way things were done.... It's called a Natural Disaster.. ok Insted of Bitching about what was done, if you wanna make a differance, get in you car and go help someone, go buy something to donate, or just donate cash... I have been talking to my wife daily on the phone, she is there right now, she is heart broken to see all these people hurting, but I will say she is there....helping out Thats all the people who are there Now want, they just want help.. they keep telling everyone Over & Over.. they just want Help & Supplies.... Just my opinion that I wish all these people would quit arguing over who did what wrong... Get off their ASS and go do something right.... Sorry.. No I am not... I just feel for those people who are still without AID or Anything.... God Bless Everyone Charlie

| I don't even think that very many mistakes were made. This is one of the worst disasters to ever hit the US. It takes time to respond to something this big. If I had to say someone made it mistake, it would be the people who could have evacuated but chose not to. They are the ones suffering the most right now. I have to admit though that I would have stayed just to hold down the fort but I would have sent my family some place safe. I also would have bailed out as soon as it started looking really bad.

| Not healthy for any free society. The more I read and hear about this, I have to agree with Joe Scarborough that it's simply a bureaucratic mess. He was there for days and said that no matter what you try to do, someone from FEMA or other agencies get in your way. He says that these twerps have to stop saying "no" everytime as the first word out of their mouths. What are they afraid of? The worst example is the Pensacola MD that has been trying to get his 10,000 free tetanus shots to the area. He even offered to administer them himself. Answer: "No." Charlie

Ok.. I am sorry this is being misunderstood.... Is what I am saying is how can they be arguing about who fault it is and people are starving to Death and Dying.... The people... Right there and Now... they are telling us over the phone ... They do not care who's Fault it is.. They want help.. They want food.. They just want water.. they want someone to bring them supplies... So they can survive.. Where my Wife and the Church Team is they still have not seen any help other than a few people who can get through.. the rest are too scared to go in that far.... Jonny I understand what you said.... All I am trying to say is their is alot of people who are able to do something, but they would much rather DEBATE who's Fault it was, when they could be out there SAVING people's lives.... God Bless Everyone Charlie

Well I agree totally with your post... The only thing that frustrates me more than anything else is that up in this area, they keep telling us just to make monetary donations. They told us (health care workers) not to go down to the south to help without going with a relief organization because, and I quote: Quote:Many of you have asked how you can volunteer to help. FEMA has requested that "volunteers not report directly to the affected areas unless directed by a voluntary agency. Self- dispatched volunteers can put themselves and others in harm's way and hamper rescue efforts". |
| So.....that being said, I have no financial resources to donate other than to give an extra dollar at the convenient store around the corner. It makes me very depressed that every avenue I've looked down for a way to help has said not to do anything but send money. Is that what the people down there are saying, too?

Carrie... Yes, they always pull the money card every time we get a Hurricane through here... We found out the hard way, when Charlie came through here last year, it hit 2 places close to us... It hit to the South in Punta Gorda and the to the East in Arcadia, both places were flattened.. Thousands of people homeless... they came on TV telling everyone to stay put just send a donation to the Red Cross, I am not banging the Red Cross... ok... But everyone had Family & Friends in those areas... Everyone Loaded up Water, Diapers, food, tents.. everything they could find and headed into the area.. Alot of the Law Enforcement were upset at first, but they realize now, that this choice saved alot of lives. We live here and we know how to react, we deal with this every year, its like a fire drill.. Thats why Jeb Busch done such a great job, all the people around him know what job to do and how to do it. Just like with this Relief Team that we sent this week. Everyone we called for information just told us not to go, just donate cash and stay home. Well the area they went this week they are still waiting for anyone to show up with Supplies & AID, cause no one has been there yet from the Government. I call it as I see it, if I did not have a morgage to pay I would have been right along with them.. but my wife closed her cleaning business and went... She will be back Friday sometime in the afternoon, so I suggest that you ask her what she saw and How much help is there. God Bless Everyone Charlie

Charlie - You're a wee bit closer than I am! Here's another somewhat maddening story about it...which just increases the frustration of all of us working in health care.... My roommate loaded up with 9 people on 2 ambulances last Friday in the middle of the night. They sat on those ambulances until the middle of Saturday. She's part of an Emergency Management squad..... As it turns out, they dispatched 'too many' at once - and in the end, she and the rest of the crew took the ambulances home and had to go back to their own lives - they were forbidden to take the trucks and go down. What I want to know is................ WHY???????? And why do they keep saying on our news that they only need doctors. They don't say that they don't need nurses, but they dont' say they do need them either. Hell - half the doctors end up asking the nurses how to do procedures they never even learned! Many of the docs on our unit don't even know how to change a diaper! For Pete's sake - I can change a diaper in 30 seconds and get a kid to take a bottle of formula in 30 minutes or less.....and if not, can find other solutions.............you'd think that would be helpful. So that's why I'm frustrated. I don't understand all the calls for help, yet all the ways our help gets rejected because it's not the right kind of help. So now I'm torn between the guilt trips that I'm not doing more to help, and also the frustration of offering more to help, but being rejected. Tragedy on many levels, if you ask me.

Carrie... As I was reading your post, the answer that you are looking for came right on MSNBC... Here is where the problem is... If you are going through a Government Agency, you have to go through all the Red Tape, just as they said it can take months even years to get Registered. This is howwe get in there so Fast, we are a Faith Based Orgaization, we do not get premission from No Agency, just the Group paying for the trip & supplies. In our case it was about 5 local Churches. If you really want to go, I would suggest finding an Organization that is Privately Funding themselves or find a Church that is looking for Dr's and/or Nurse's, I don't think you would have to much of a problem, if you really want to go.... God Bless Charlie

If you do not want to know the true state of things and my feelings... I would just move on to another thread.... The things that I am going to say are going to upset alot of people, but you know my world has changed due to Katrina.... I have not been there, but I feel as if I had, I am not bitching I am just telling it how it is... I talked to my wife everyday while they were there, I talk to several people on the Relief Team, and I talked to 2 of the people that came back with the Relief Team..... All these people looking for someone to blame.... Such Bullshit.. I swear.. People's Loved Ones and Children are lying DEAD in the Streets in Gulf Port Miss.. and so many other places around the Disaster Area... All these F**king People keep doing is looking for someone to blame... Put down your differences and get the F**K in there and HELP do something... Bring water, Bring Food... Reach out to these people... My God this is the USA... Debate the Blame later... I am just so F**king MADD right now... People from everywhere are just looking to point a finger and people are just blind to people dropping DEAD.... I am going to stop here... I just can't even see straight.... I love the people here and I love this site... but I JUST WISH these people would just drop the shit and spend some time thinking of IDEA's to Help Someone affected by this Disaster..... Night All GOD BLESS EVERYONE !!!! Charlie

Charlie, I agree. Had to stop reading another thread because it was ticking me off just to read it. Wanted to give you an update on what our university is telling us about our involvement in the disaster. Byebye directly going with FEMA! I think they finally realized that wouldn't get us down there. So now they're making a big push for people to sign up for a 2 week block of time....looks as though you can only sign on from campus. Going to discuss this with mom, but they'll be sending people down for a long time it looks like! I'll be back on campus on Monday, so I can also get more info on what they're asking for. Just wanted to pass along that at least one organization was finally moving in the right direction as far as sending medical relief! My blood pressure is lowering on that front now. Hugz and vibes for all you and Jolene are doing, Carrie

Lizzie (gonna hijack your post for a bit here Charlie), You are most right, they are going to need nurses and medical personnel for awhile to come. There are not anywhere near enough nurses/others to handle the scope of this thing. People will be in makeshift shelters for awhile (special needs shelters can't be moved that easily). If you happen to be coming through the Monroe, LA area, let me know and maybe I can meet you in person!. Back to our regularly scheduled thread. Charlie, you know how I feel about the situation in certain places, my pm said it all. Got your's and jolene's back. 'darlin

My neighbor lady Diane (my adopted mom) and her best friend BJ, who are both in their early 50's, just picked up their applications yesterday from the Salvation Army to go down and help (we live up in central Wisconsin). I am scared for Ma, but she can handle whatever comes her way. I would go myself, but I have 2 children that depend on me to watch after them, and my husband works swing shift (1 income family). But there ARE those of use who can handle this sort of thing, thank God. We just leave the break down and tears for later when we're alone. Anyway, it is SO GOOD to know that there are people like you guys that take care of our own. And I ain't talkin bout just our own families, but our own HUMAN BEINGS. That's what it's all about folks. Love, Prayers and Many Thanks... mel

I'm a newbie but I'll put in my two cents worth...... There are liability, safety, and reimbursement issues that drive the process of sending people into an area like New Orleans. As an example for several days into the response the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency was gathering lists of assets and staff that could go (trained response professionals). However, these resources could not be activated until A) Tennessee received a disaster declaration and B) The resources were requested by FEMA or through one of the affected states through one of the many EMACs (Emergency Management Assistance Compacts). This resulted in some of the delay in resources being mobilized. In the meantime the Federal Government has been utilizing resources. I have colleagues that are part of the the TN-1 DMAT (Disaster Medical Assistance Team) that have been in the field since before landfall in the Gulf. They have done everything from set up field hospitals in Baton Rouge and New Orleans (on the side of I-10) to helping manage the patient load at Oshner Hospital. Do I think part of the has been botched? Sure Do I think things could have been done better or more efficiently? Definitely! Do I think now is the time to point fingers of blame? Absolutely Not!! I say all this because there are many aspects of emergency management that most people in the US don't understand. The bureaucracy is intense but was originally put in place to insure that the Federal Government did not come in and try and take an operation from a State. As a result we have these red tape procedures that bog down the works. One of the biggest reasons that people (even highly trained response professionals) are asked to not self-deploy is because there is no guarantee of safety, security, logistical support or mission success. If there are failures in any of these areas during a self-deployment you become a burden on the response effort rather than a blessing to it. I hope this makes sense. Just my 2 cents worth.

| Well all the more reasons to look at how the Faith Based Organizations handled it... They did as usual.. Rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty, while everyone was filling out the Red Tape & Debating who was going where after the disaster happens....Hmmm wonder what took so long and why 70% of the affected area's are still waiting on just Food & Water... I know some people do not believe it,but when you walk in FAITH to help people in need the LORD will GUIDE You and PROTECT You in EVERYTHING that You do... People need to learn this lesson and TRUST in the LORD.. not rely on the Government everytime something bad happens.... God Bless Everyone Charlie
