Think the Katrina relief effort down South is easy? Try to follow me here: The Rule Book: I am under a paid contract as a consultant to one non profit who is going to coordinate with another in the relief effort. They asked me to participate as a coordinator. Sure! Problem is there is nothing in the contract that allows me to do so. Lets write a seperate contract addendum. They do. In long hand on a legal pad. OK. No big deal. My time will be gratis anyway. They ask me to notarize it. UH FOLKS! I cant notarize my own contract and besides, I think my seal would punch right through the paper. LOL See what I am dealing with already and we haven't started yet. The addendum says I will not take any active part in collection or distribution. Who they shittin? They know as well as I do my Jeep will end up packed to the roof with pampers and pot roasts at some point and heading towards Otis Air Base. Maybe end up in a sweaty cargo hold of a plane heading South. There goes the rule book. Logistics: Like it or not you have to discuss liability. If one volunteer is driving another volunteers vehicle and gets in an accident, whose insurance company pays? Of the 100 or so collection volunteers, how many will show? Do the distribution volunteers pick up, or do the collection volunteers deliver to the distribution volunteers. Whos driving and where the hell are we going and who has the pampers? Eventually, somehow, the goods will make it to Otis Air Base. OK. Now some of the goods will be flown directly to the South. Anybody know someone with a cargo plane? No? Shit. Now I gotta go find a cargo plane willing to fly for free. I always wanted to go to New Orleans but not under these circumstances. Speaking of which. Whose going and to do what? To where? With what? and what are you going to do when you get there? I better get on the phone. Bye the way (again) whose phone service are we billing to? Non Profit (A) or non profit (B)? Then there will be the 1 or 2 guys who want to be in charge. The ones you know you are going to have to drag into the back room and tell them to shut the fuck up, roll up your sleeves or hit the fucking highway. One of course, will be a minority guy who is going to sue for dafamation or some such nonsense. Here come the lawyers! All this needs to be accomplished by yesterday. So all the critics of the response....well......you have some valid points. BUT Until you've tried to do it then shut the fuck up, roll up your sleeves or hit the fucking highway. Sue me!
