Kids & smokes

My son, who is almost 12, came home from school last week asking us alot of questions about smokeing. Apparently some of the other 6th graders in his school are smokeing and he is expressing intrest in it. My wife and I both smoke and we don't know what to tell him. I'm glad he came to us first so I don't want to blow it. I would rather him try it at home instead of around a bunch of other kids pressureing him to do it, but I would rather talk him out of it all together.
Any Ideas on this one?

Oh man giffy, I wouldn't even condone him trying it at all, but that's JMO...
Anyway, my own daughter took a couple puffs off my cig when I was still smoking, and she coughed and hacked so bad, that she thought it very disgusting and never asked me again. She was 5 yrs old at the time. I feel that the older they get, the more likely they'll want to do it... Anyway, there was a pamphlet I picked up at the docs office to read about how to tell your kids not to smoke, even though you do. I wish I could remember the name of it, but I can't.

I would also assume there is some info. online where you can get answers as to what to do in the type of situation your are in right now??

Tell him it can kill you and explaine addiction. Then by a pack of smokes and make him smoke the whole thing till he pukes. Then let him determine if he still wants to smoke or not. But let him know under no circumstances will you buy smokes for him even when he is addicted.
No all seriousness aside my 16 yr old smoked for a couple of years off and on and then determined it was dumb and a waste of money and quit on his own. We offered to take him to the dr for help quitting but he did it cold turkey on his own.
I have another19 year old who has smoked since he was 13. He likes it and wont quit.
I have a twin 19 yr old who never smoked and has no interest in that. He takes care of his body.
Ultimately the decision is theirs you just have to supply them with the facts to make a smart decision hopfully. But their is not much that can be done. My husband and I don't smoke. We used to when the boys were little but we both quit. Maybe they remember that . Who knows with kids what makes them tic. Good luck!

You're in kind of a tough spot, but I found the following quote on a kids' health site:

I will by no means condone it. We will give him all the facts about health issues and tell him sports are out of the question if he starts smoking, and he'll probably turn into a troll  . I just don't want to tell him there's no way we are going to let him try it because he'll just turn around and try it behind our back.
It made me mad at first, that he's hanging around the bad crowd, but he isn't. it's just kids bein kids. I started smokin when I was 12, thanks to my brother.

Well... not sure which is worse, having your parents say its OK to try it, or having them try it behind your back. I sure hope I don't ever have to be in your position giffy and hope that your kid makes the right choice. These are times when our parenting is put to the test. Ain't our jobs just grand??
