My mom asked me if I was going to come home for part of the weekend - I told her I couldn't afford to fill up my car to get there! She said I should just fill it up now before the prices go even higher.

We're currently paying $42 for a 20 litre drum which runs out to around $9.50 a gallon, but you get to keep the empty.

Outside of general driving issues fuel costs are having a huge impact on farming and transportation industries. Transportation firms are lucky because they typically pass costs along, however these ultimately affect consumer pricing. The downside - transportation now adds over 40% to the cost products. In agriculture where prices are strictly controlled by the commodities market.... Farm service companies (such as crop dusters) pass their fuel costs directly on to farm operatons. Fuel to run farming equipment comes directly out of each farm operation's profits. Fuel costs for transporting argicultural goods and equipment gets charged back to each farm operation. When aricultural products reach market the farm operation's must accept what a commodities market offers for their products so they are eating significant fuel cost increases that they have no way to pass along. One farm owner stated that he's spent a lot getting his crops to where they are and can't afford to not harvest. But at the same time said I can't afford to run the equipment (which he estimates would cost $100 per day more than budgeted due to fuel increases) to harvest. He added that after transportation costs he doesn't know how he could pay for it all with what he would receive for his crops. When Prescott Bush was in the Senate he voted against deregulating the Oil/Gas industry because he felt that consumer prices would get out of control. He was also openly concerned that with the level Oil/Gas industry bribery going on in Washington he couldn't support deregulation. Deregulation was being pushed by his own son George H.W Bush - Pres. Bush #1. He utlimately voted against deregulation but was outvoted. Seems he was right to oppose his own son's efforts to deregulate the industry. Tom
