He is right we dont need it but I would bet we wouldnt turn it away either if it showed up, and it would be appreciated. Send water, food, generators, tents, clothes, blankets what ever. But to clarify by we dont need it, there is plenty here but we need it at the affected areas. wether it comes locally or from somewhere else the people in need would accept and remember it for a long time. Some times He doesnt clarify his statements and some times they are picked apart and only parts are used to make him look bad. Not sure what this is a case of though.

What he , you , I ALL of us need to remember is that it is every bit as gracious to receive as it is to give. Those of us that HAVE had from you over the years would love the chance to pay it back. Not all of us that have had from you will try, not all of us can.. but its nice to let those who can give back, give back, be it on a personal level or a national level. I love giving, I'm a cow at letting others give to me but I'm learning - slowly - that others enjoy the same joy of giving and that if I don't let them I'm mean. I don't mean this as a critiscism of anyone or of any country per se just an oberservation for all of us in general (and especially me!!) Its blessed to give, but its blessed to allow others to give to.

If he means that we'll turn down aid, then that is an insult to those who want to help, IMO. What would be worse, I think, is to pick and choose who we are willing to accept help from. Bad PR. I'm sorry Mike, no matter how you feel about Bush...it's painful to watch him speak. (A quote from Tucker Carlson)

We have what we need, getting to where it is needed is the problem. The area's that are not flooded are in full swing with aid. New Orleans has limited access when the roads aren't flooded, so things are much worse. Remember the docks are gone so help by sea is impossible, and there is a major security problem going on. The Navy sent amphibious forces, but they have to sail around Florida to get there, and the sea is still the slowest travel method. Once the Navy gets there and makes it safe for rescuers things will get better. There are people at the convention center waiting for buses, but they need to be able to protect them first with armed Guardsmen. I guess it is turning into a war zone, the heat must really drive people mad. We can't request aid until we know what is needed and that any help doesn't have to fear for thier life. I'm sure that we will need help supplying the refugee camps that will be forming soon. Opus/Paul

I heard Bush speak during an interview on Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer this morning.. and one of the things that he talked about was getting aid from other countries. I think that reporters are messing with what he said.. go figure.. He never once said that we didnt need nor that we wouldnt welcome any help from anyone... in fact he said that he would be happy to get it, even if they are just sending us money to help those in need. I wish I could find exactly what he said but I am not good with finding things on the internet.. I think one of the goals in what he was saying was to build up our confidence, like he did after 9/11.. Saying that we CAN get through this and WILL be stronger in the end.. no matter how much or how little help we get. Right now, we cant even begin to think about re-building NO or Mississippi as there are many people to be rescued and I think that we need to assess everything and then figure out what needs to be done, than we can get help with that. Hope that this makes sense.. Oh and Nani, Quote: I'm sorry Mike, no matter how you feel about Bush...it's painful to watch him speak. (A quote from Tucker Carlson) |
| I agree I support the president no matter who is, I personally wouldnt want that job, but you are so right... I just want to pinch his cheeks and tell him to get another job.. sorry, just something about him. Jill

No, we don't need help from abroad right now. We're having a hard enough time utilizing the help that we are getting domesticly right now. Once things get opened up and moving a little, there may be room for more help but right now, more help would just held up waiting to get in like all the other help.

If he did, in fact say that, and it was taken in the whole context of his comments, then he has gone crazy. If our country arbitrarily turns down aid from other countries during a disaster such as this, then as Nani said, it's a slap in the fact of countries who want to help us. Do you have print, audio, or video that you can share with us so we can hear or read the entire comment? We would all really like to hear this, because I'm afraid the entire quote would not be printed in our papers here, with the biased media we have. Would you keep an eye open for the whole speech/commentary for us, please? Sandy

If you are concerned enough to question the sanity of our President based on one out-of-context snippit Svenn, maybe you ought to listen some more to what he is saying. I'm not trying to incite a fight here, but it amazes me how fast people are to pick apart every damn thing he says when all he is doing right now is trying to lead our country through the worst natural disaster we have ever faced. Anybody in his position should be given some latitude right now, not attitude.

I just read a new report that Ms. Rice stated we will accept all the help we are offered from foreign countries. I would guess that she and the president are on the same page. Logistics are of course a real problem, but for quite some time people are going to need help as individuals and families. Also the local infrastructure (water, gas, electric, government, business, and housing) will need to be rebuilt in the worst areas. I would think foreign aid will be greatly appreciated, as well as the rest of America giving what we can. Rich

Here is part of an article from the AP. It can be found toward the bottom of www.foxnews.com The article seems to have a good quote of the president talking to ABC news. Quoted portions of article: WASHINGTON — In a dramatic turnabout, the United States is now on the receiving end of help from around the world as some two dozen countries offer post-hurricane assistance. -snipped- With offers from the four corners of the globe pouring in, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice (search) has decided "no offer that can help alleviate the suffering of the people in the afflicted area will be refused," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Thursday. However, in Moscow, a Russian official said the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency had rejected a Russian offer to dispatch rescue teams and other aid. -snipped- Still, Bush told ABC-TV: "I'm not expecting much from foreign nations because we hadn't asked for it. I do expect a lot of sympathy and perhaps some will send cash dollars. But this country's going to rise up and take care of it." "You know," he said, "we would love help, but we're going to take care of our own business as well, and there's no doubt in my mind we'll succeed. And there's no doubt in my mind, as I sit here talking to you, that New Orleans is going to rise up again as a great city." -snipped- End of quoted article. Snipped portions in order to highlight the points pertaining to this thread.

No Svenn; Bush is not crazy nor insane. He just doesn't understand that while it may be fun for him to play "tough guy," the poor who are stuck in the middle of this mess haven't got time for it and have lost their famous "bootstraps" with which to pull themselves up. You have to forgive him for these things. He had fun in his youth. He'll see the light and accept aid....it will take months just for basic stuff to get running smoothly so timing for most overseas aid shouldn't be a factor. We in the "blue states" will be appreciative. Frankly, we need all the help we can get. Even we can be spread thin, especially now. We can use other points of view too. It's more fun being part of the rest of the world too. You might not want to go this far though: (I know Svenn and all those funny tea-swillers haven't ) Charlie

Don't believe everything you hear. )I personally am waiting to hear other countries offers to help. Perhaps they have already but I am not mad at any country because of what I have read or heard or otherwise. There are to many communication moguls with personal agenda's. Dont believe anything you hear and only half of what you see. Politicians suck. the media sucks. Sensasionalizing others pain and suffering for a rating...worse than laywers. Did I mention the media has no idea what the majority of our countrymen and women think. Just my opinion, but we'll take all your money Svenn. Thanks for the help to all of our friends in the world. BBZ, you should turn on your radio if you are waiting to hear about international aid to help the people. There is an outpouring. I am sick of people bad-mouthing Bush for the job that he is doing. This hurricane happened to come while bush was on vacation. You cant blame him for it. Now, just cause the city of NO was evacuated sunday all day, and the hurricane hit on monday morning, doesnt mean the president cant fly to arizona to play golf on tuesday. And just because marshall law has been declared, and it looks like the worst natural disaster in the USA ever, doesnt mean that the president cant fly back to his ranch in texas and spend another night there on vacation. Bush personally made the brand new Department of Homeland security and the National Security office the leader in disasters like this. Bush was thinking far in advance and he took care of this. He personally sought to it that FEMA was taken off as leader, and a gentleman that used to work as a judge on an appellet court was put to be in Czar power over national disasters. I dont know what else you commie tree huggers want the president to do. And of course, the biased media here in the USA certainly wont talk about half of the brilliant things Bush has done that i mentioned earlier. Cant you liberals just give the man a break? BMonee

If anyone other than Bush were reading the history of salt (one of the books he was reading) and not shown camped out in the Cabinet Room, you'd be marching on 1600. No fair of course that Homeland Security was created to keep Americans on edge or downright frightened of those "brown people" rather than act as a disaster relief agency. I do hope they do better there than at Dulles where they broke open Svenn's luggage to keep out dangerous Scandinavians. Sorry Svenn. USA owes you big time. Hope George does OK though. Frankly, I don't have a problem if he stays home or golfs. It does look bad to others though. Charlie

You know the captian always has to pick the lesser of two weevils. I just think that what who did or didnt do what when is irrelevant at the present time. All the Bush bashin is proving that people (the liberal press)hold a grudge when the loser they voted for lost. I doubt he can control the weather or the way people react to it. He's the lame duck anyway. I am glad to hear we do have friends abroad that understand and do not hold the people responsible for the shit the politicians shove down our throat. | Another great quote, that's our president. We need all the help we can get right now and the sooner the better. USA is one part of the world, so I hope some could put aside the "USA #1" rah-rah at least for the next few months. Now is not the time to turn away help from others. That's how I feel. We are in Iraq to bring them a democratic country just like America...or was it the other way around? I say mission accomplished.

I just heard on the "liberal" news this morning that law and order has broken down in NO, people haven't eaten in days, dead bodies are laying all around, a CNN crew was taken by the police and placed on the station's rooftop for protection and that the police are trying to protect their station from the criminals that are freely roaming around with guns...yes, troops are finally being sent in to help restore law and order, but why did it take four days? What has happened to all of the planning that the vaunted Dept. of Homeland Security has done for mass terrorist attacks? Surely a mass attack would have a similar effect, minus the water (unless it included blowing up levees or dams) that Katrina has had on NO. I shudder to think what would be happening there if the destruction were not caused by a hurricane but by terrorists-if the fear of another attack was factored in, it would be more terrible than it is now. Reports are coming in that some right wing circles are complaining that the "liberal news media" are focusing too much on the suffering of the people (?!) and are also trying to drag Bill Clinton into this mess as in how the reporting would be done if he were in office! Someone has lost touch with reality and I really hope that the Federal Government not only starts acting more quickly but LEARNS important lessons from this terrible disaster. Focus on helping the suffering people and forget fucking politics!

This has been a disaster wating to happen for at least 50 years. Rebuilding New Orleans in it's current location would seem not only stupid, but show we are unable to learn from our mistakes. There is plenty of higher (not below sea level) land just north ot New Orleans. Dugh. Lee

Perhaps some expertise from oh....say: The Netherlands, would be welcome down in New Orleans? Of course they actually spent a fortune reworking their advanced systems for keeping out the sea.
