Are Georgians the only idiots?

Today, something was going around, the gas stations were closing.  I mean I heard this from what I consider intelligent people...  I tried to express to them, what they heard was started as an internet hoax or something to that effect, as I had been told.

First it was 3pm, then "No, really, I heard it's 4pm, my friend called the Emergency Management, and they verified it, they have to ration."  Then I am coming home about 6pm, the stations are STILL open with 3 block long lines?!  Okay, idiots, NO, there was NOT an emergency rationing, but YOU JUST CREATED A SHORTAGE?!

I felt like I was in the twilight zone, in a gasoline version of a bank run.  Anyone  who just happens to NEED gas tomorrow, because their fuel light was coming on, will be out of luck.   I was lucky, I filled up the other night and my car gets 30 mpg    My husband is unemployed right now, and driving 1.5 hours north looking for work tomorrow.  Hope he can find gas, or he will end up sleeping in his car, we can't afford the hotel!  Grin

I heard about rationing in Indianapolis - didn't know it was happening elsewhere.

I'm now thanking my higher power that I: 1) work from home  2) own a Toyota Corolla  3)  filled up Monday and it should last me for the next month.

My darling hubby, however, has to drive a small SUV to haul his photo equipment and travels the road quite a bit.  I'm starting to think Macaroni and Cheese instead of Steak....

Thank goodness we have a wood-burning stove.  I don't think we'll be able to afford heat this winter.

What I don't understand is why the increase.. and the reasoning behind the amounts of increase.. I filled up this morning for $2.79..  the same station tonight was $3.09.  I could understand if I was told that X number of $ was going to disaster relief and I could see that happening, but to line the pocket of some camel-racing-rich-beyond-belief-war mongering oil Puba in another country just irritates the fire out of me.

Yep, I lived through that, I had JUST gotten my driver's license, and could only fill up on even days, based on my license plate.

One particular day sticks out....I worked for my Dad doing deliveries and such in Baltimore.  He needed me to pick up some stuff the next day, and it was NOT my fill up day. There was no way I would make it THERE and back.  He told me to meet him at the airport at his hanger, and he drained some fuel out of his right wing.  Glub Glub Glub....My little Datsun 260z ran quite zippy for the next week!

I also remember croaking when I filled up one of the company pick up trucks, and the total was nearly $75 Shocked at least I WASN'T paying for it.

My little nerdy economy car is only a 12 gallon tank, and it's killer putting in gas at $3!!!

Going to be a hard hit for some!  I know I can't pay any bills until next Thursday when I get paid!  LOL  My car has about a quarter tank left from when I last drove it on Monday - didn't fill up then because I passed a  station where it was $2.85 and knew I couldn't pay it!  Plus - I take the train to work most of the time.  However, I'm going home this weekend so I'll have to fill up the tank at least once!  Gonna go take my pennies to the nearest coinstar. Wink

The prices went up like that on Monday here, when people were talking about how a big % of Georgia oil comes from around the hurricane area.  It really pisses me off, the gas in the tank under the station didn't cost more, and changing the price in response to the impending hurricane was price gouging, just like what they did to bottled water around the hurricanes last year.

Why don't they look at it this way, like you said, our dough could go to help the devistation along the Gulf Coast, if these unreasonable prices for OLD gas suck the cash out of our pockets, we have less to send!

We are just really in a tough job transition time, my husband has been laid off over a month, he's having all these diagnostic tests done, the insurance doesn't pay crap, I am studying for certification tests, my head hurts like a BI@%! (for the first time since kudzu) from zoning in front of the computer all day, and sifting through books, stressing, and then throw some MORE ways to suck money out of our pocket.  I could just puke

Next time you go to a walmart or something, get a coin sorter, those coinstar suckers eat up quite a bit of it!  My kids help me count, and I don't mind giving them a percent!  Ugh, I can relate to those money issues.  I am sifting around in the living room, hoping to find the damn $100 bill I lost last month...... when it rains in pours, in the Gulf coast Wink and in life in general.

Mostly psychological.  That oil won't be out for a while, and the idea that it is going to the refineries that were damaged in the storm raises the question of how long they'll be shut down.  But if it stops the herd from panicking, good.  The fact that market prices go up does not equal a crisis.

well, the argument is that for the gas station to replace the fuel in the tanks below it will cost more money.  I understand that argument.  Its like gas futures.
Somehow the oil industry got so much clout, they wont even purchase product and sell it anymore.  The need the futures money now.

Man, those bastards down there got wiped out.  It seems that some areas in mississippi are gone.  Its not that there is a lot of destruction.......shit's just gone.
It resembles the damage from the tsunami last year.  Some places just dont exist anymore.
Its tragic.

I thought that too until I watched The News hour tonight, basically some oil rigs were distroyed, and all damaged, 5 refineries are flooded, and the power is out that runs the pipeline, there is a lack of gas becouse there is no oil to refine. The price goes up becouse they have to sell it for what it is worth otherwise they won't be able to pay for the next shipment. The measures that Washington did today will help alot.

By the way gas was **fixed** $2.679 **fixed** tonight at my local station which has no 2competion. This wa in upstate NY.

Rigs were damaged, pipelines were damaged with one only partial restored and the other still requiring repair (btw... The vast majority of petrol sold in the eastern US comes from the gulf coast refineries and these pipelines are the conduit to the distribution centers), most of the refineries shutdown the day before the hurricane hit to protect their employees (most of the refineries are still controlled on-site, although at least one refinery was still operating and being controlled from a remote location), and most of the oil docks and rigs are closed for the foreseeable future.

Although this is a localized problem, and should not effect the amount of oil available globally for refining, because the eastern US is such a large market for foreign oil, some oil producing nations will likely reduce production to prevent an overly large surplus, and will drive crude futures up.  Also, because of the disruption to oil refining and transportation, it's likely that oil companies will have to pay more for transportation of oil for the foreseeable future, and will increase prices to make up for it.  There's also futures markets for refined oil and gasoline (among other oil products most likely) and these futures are likely to climb very quickly with the refineries cutting production.

And ya wanna know the best part?  Don't expect the prices for petrol to ever get back to the prices they were at prior to the hurricane.  The future markets can act alot like the stock markets.  Even after production, supply, and demand return to normal, the traders will be hard pressed to let the prices fall (after all, they're only in the game for the money), and OPEC will most likely put pressure on the market to make sure it stays up.

Let's see... The eggheads in this area are predicting $4/gallon soon... I need about 50 gallons a month to get to werk and back.  So much for buyin' a PS3 next year... Tongue

They just showed a local gas station in Philadelphia at $3.37 on the news.  Pretty soon I'm gonna have to take up another job!!  Anyone in the Philadelphia area have kids who need a piano teacher?  A 30 minute lesson costs less than a tank of gas - I'll give ya that much at least!  LMAO

No kidding I'm actually pretty worried about this!  I just can't pay it right now!  I'll bet ya the Exxon up  the street is close to $4 by now because they alwyas charge like $.10 more than everywhere else!  Seems the lower priced stations up  here are Wawa, Lukoil, and BP (well at least the one I saw on City Line Ave the other day was cheaper than the 2 other gas stations on the corner!)  oy

My wife works for an oil company and they aren't making any money, at least that's what she tells  me. The main terminal is charging 3.09 gal. all the stations that Santmeyer Oil owns is selling it for 3.09 gal.

Drk^Angel is correct, most eastern states are fed by Gulf Coast refineries. I heard on the news one of the off shore rigs broke loose and floated inland and took out a building or a bridge or something like that.

Somehow, some way, maybe you can raise your prices.  My daughter's teacher just raised hers, check out the market in your area.  She was only asking $20 for 45 minutes private lessons, when 30 minute groups were at the same price.

This is really going to effect everyone. I am glad when I got a car last  November, I went for economy and not size.

Yep, I saw the pipeline drawing from the Gulf, northeast to around Philly (did they say 15% get it from there?).  This whole region will be affected, and I am sure it will trickle over into the rest of the country.

I just didn't understand the logic of people SHORT term going nuts, waiting in lines, like there was NEVER going to be gas again. It's a crisis, but they were overreacting, making it hard for the people who actually needed the gas.  Going wacko to get your tank topped off was ridiculous....just think of all the gas they burned waiting in those lines!!!!

The stations here hicked the prices sky high yesterday. I filled up yesterday morning on the way to the Doctor. $2.59 a hour later the same gas station went up to $3.09 by 12 noon the price had reached $4.44 by night when my husband came home it was $5.59 ! This morning I had to go back to the doctor and there was a gas truck filling the tanks. This morning there price for gas is $3.09 You better believe he has been reported. The Govoner said that stations should only charge 10 cents over what they paid for it. Now these stations were making more than double what they paid. The gas stations cause the panic by putting there prices high. People fell for it. They were forced to lower the prices  today. The bad part is they robed a lot of poor people and they used grocery Money to buy the gas.

Wal mart kept there prices down. They ran out of Reg gas and were saleing the preimum for the same as the reg this moring. Wal Mart Rocks.

Exactly.... I am not a native, and it totally amazes me what happens during weather issues here, WAY worse than up north.  Granted, they don't have any equipment for snow and ice, but last year during the hurricanes, school was closed for a WEEK?! It was a total over reaction. They wiped the stores out of water, and we just sort of chilled out when we watched the weather forcast changing.

I guess they just keep everyone home during weather incidents so they won't kill eachother on the roads.  I asked a co-worker how she POSSIBLY got in a wreck in an ice storm years ago, when she had her 4WD. She looks at me and says " Oh, I didn't have it on."  And 4WD is for WHAT???  I really don't even get why people have it here unless they are hunters or mud boggers.

Some of the logic here, still staggers the mind. I still have not gotten used to it after nearly 20 years....Mmmm, I guess boiled peanuts, barbeque, peaches and low country boils are their expertise---guess I can live with that a while longer.

Actually, 4WD is useless on glare ice.  I've actually found that my FWD Corolla does better on ice than the 4WD's we have/had. Grin  Anyway, I hear ya.  But unless you've lived around it on a normal basis, it IS a crisis when it happens. Undecided

BTW, it is seriously windy here today!! Shocked

P.S. I filled up my car yesterday morning at $2.67 a gallon.  By the end of the day, that same gas station was at $2.99 a gallon.  I read on the news that there are some stations in WI that are out of gas... I have yet to see that up here. Undecided  I'll let ya'll know what it's at today, as I have to take Lily to town for her Karate sparring class.
