Disaster Relief

Has anyone stopped to think.....
Every time a disaster happens in the world, the US is the first one to be asked (or expected) to furnish help, money and aide to help rebuild the area affected.
Now our Gulf Coast has been wiped out.... where is the rest of the damn world to help us????
We need MONEY, OIL, FOOD, CLOTHING and CREWS to help rebuild -- and we need it NOW.....
We still haven't finished rebuilding FL yet and now we've got the rest of the coast wiped out.
Here in the south, we're getting people from New Orleans pouring into Shreveport and even into Dallas. My Grandson is going thru his toys to find things for some kids who had to flee from New Orleans and have moved in with some of his neighbors. We're getting clothes together for these people. They left with nothing and can't go back. From the reports we're getting it'll be months before they'll get any relief at all. No jobs, no house, no nothing.
I just looked across the street at the gas station and the price went up last night -- unleaded is now $3.10 this morning. And from what I hear we're going to have some rationing. What about the surplus we have? George says that's for emergency use only -- what the hell does he consider an emergency?????
Guess I'm just mad as hell right now about no help from the rest of the damn world when we've been johnny on the spot for so many years and now when we have emergencies and disasters we don't get no help at all. I'm for cutting out foreign aid all together and concentrating on OUR people. Let the rest of the world tend to themselves!

Barb I couldn't agree with you more.
I read last night NOT to send clothes canned goods etc as repackaging them took more time and effort than people had to spare right now so to just send money.
So that is what I did. I couldn't agree with you more. The US always is right there, ready to help. It will be very interesting to see how many offers of help you all get back. I for one firmly believe in helping my friends FIRST..

If you live close enough, taking in *some* things is fine. They really need towels, travel sized toiletries and diapers. Our shelter here is maxed out and there are still people pouring in (they have already said that noone will be turned away).
At least Wal Mart has stepped up to the plate. They just made a one million dollar donation to the salvation army. Plus, our local Wal Marts have really helped out. I wonder where the hell all these other corporate people are, like Coca Cola (started here in Monroe), Brookshires/Super 1?

But there are many other companies that need to do the same, they get all Big Fat Rich, before the Storm hits, then after the storm, they disappear.
Home Depot, Lowes, Pepsi Co, Coke.. etc... Its time for them to start dishing out, insted of filling their pockets...
If they all did a little something, it would cost them Null and I am almost sure they would even be albe to write it all off on Taxes....
Maybe we should start writing letters to all them...

Also, on CNN just a little bit ago, they gave a list of companies donating money, storage & vehicles. Examples are of course Walmart, but also Harrah, Home Depot (I think, not sure if it's that or Lowe's), GM, U-Haul, Busch (money & drinking water), Target, etc...
I do agree though, about the other countries governments stepping up to the plate, but you have to remember, the U.S. has to ACCEPT those gifts. Right now, everyone is so frustrated at an appearence of nothing being done, but there IS. Turn on your news and you'll see. The one thing that is super hard, is rescuing people, because as the wildlife mgt. guy said last night, "You go 10 feet in a boat and hit concrete. Every ten feet..." As you can see, we'd get relief in there, IF we could actually get in there!  They are trying to plug the levee by dropping 3000lb sandbags and are trying to get barges in to dump gravel, but debris is a HUGE problem.
Each day just gets worse...

In Shreveport we're working on getting stuff together for people coming in here. Just found my aunt and uncle - they're safe and in Mansfield in a campground. They have a motorhome and had enough sense to get OUT Sunday. Just took me a while to run them down.
Heard from my son last night (a Harah's employee) that Harrah's is going to pay their employees that are "displaced" until they can rebuild. I think this is above and beyond. The other casino's that were destroyed aren't doing that.
Heard a little while ago that some of the oil reserves were going to be released. That's a start. But I just want to cry every time I see pictures of New Orleans and some of the other cities that were wiped out.
Guess this one is just too close to home for comfort and there's people in danger that I know and care about. Still don't know about too many of them.
But it's been three days now and the US has always had a plan to get to these other disaster areas and have help available within that amount of time (money as well as troops, building materials, etc). This just seems kinda one sided when we have something happen - looks like we're always on our own.

4 Navy ships have just arrived and are going to be based in Pensacola I think? I like to keep the news on for backround noise during the day.
Barb, I understand your frustration and anxiety, but please know they're doing everything they can right now to get those people out. Tons of airlifts are happening right now. The buses have just arrived at the Superdome to bus the people to the Astrodome in Houston. They are evacuating the whole city.
For some eerie reason, I feel like N.O. is going to stay submurged. I don't like these feelings...

Good to hear this.......... now only if a few of those "tax breaked" conglomerates would see the light and realize that a little PR is a good idea. Of course they got that rich by not worrying about it, I suppose.
Unbelievable how much worse this gets by the minute.
