We are looking into buying a small RV over here, have my eye on a couple of "Minnie Winnie's". As we will be motorhome virgins, any tips about what to look for when we view them?

What do you mean by Minnie Winnies, are they a small Winebago.( Not sure on the spelling )
Over here Winebago's are very popular amongst the Blue rinse set ( retiree's ) but they are really a mobile home and they tow a trailer carrying a small 4X4 usually a Suzuki or the like.

A Minnie Winnie is a C class Ford Winnebago with 6 berths. We have problems here as many of the larger Rv's are illegal on our roads or need a special Heavy Good Vehicle driving licence, C class RV's mainly don't.

My parents have a 32' Bounder Class A motorhome, damn thing even has thermopane windows, the only problem is it only gets about 7 miles to the gallon, but thats towing the minivan behind it.

Jeesh, I wish they had those restrictions here, has anyone ever seen a 45 foot coach with a huge SUV behind it being driven by an 80 year old guy who can't see over the steering wheel?, scary.........

What about the Toyota RV's? I would think they'd be ok for the roads over there?
As for us, we're looking for a 5th wheel camper. Jesse won't buy anything else.
Jonny, the trailer RV's are nice too. One thing I was told is that if you're going to get a camper (RV), it's worth it to spend the extra money on an expandable one.

I just took my 40' Gulfstream on an 1800 mile roadtrip. We saw the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park and capped off the trip with a one night stay in Vegas (to pay the gas bill). Mine is a 250hp diesel pusher and that makes a world of difference. It got about 8 mpg, but it was a blast to take the whole family on the road with it. It even has its own washer and dryer.

I have never owned a motorhome (my wife was dead set against it) but I have owned many trailers. I started camping in a tent, then went to a pop-up camper, then to a 17' trailer, a 35', a 28' and finally downsized (or at least that is what my wife said she wanted to do) to a 34 footer. All of my trailers, except my 17 footer were new, not used.
Which to get? That totally depends on what you want. How many do you need to sleep in it? Do you prefer a full bedroom? Is setting up the beds every night, and tearing them down in the morning, ok with you? Do you need a lot of seating room at meals? Do you need a full bath, or is a shower head, over the toilet, OK with you?
I recommend getting full linolium, and no carpeting. You are camping. You don't want to have to clean carpets when the kids are running in and out, with crap on their shoes. I strongly recomment an awning. In hot full sun, it gives shade, and when it rains, it is a place to get out of the rain, without cramming up the inside of the trailer.
For towing, in my mind, there is not a better tow vehicle than the Chevy/GMC Suburban/Yukon XL. It is the ultimate tow vehicle.

Towed it probably 10,000 miles. And hated every fuccin' one of them!
Never again would I be so stupid as to get another RV of any kind.
When the salesman says it'll sleep 6, he means, if you are all under 4'10" tall and under 60 pounds and if you like to sleep 2 to a bed that is only 3' wide. I don't care what the maker says, an RV will only sleep, comfortably, 2.
And if you are going to be in it for more than 2 days at a time then you had better be able to get along with each other. Those suckers get real small real quick.
My advice about getting an RV.........make hotel reservations!

Thanks for the warnings! We are 3 + small dog, and our little boy is only 6. I would anticipate keeping it for a few years only, then when he starts hitting puberty and I can't stand the sight of him we would sell. The Winnie is 6 berth but I agree, only could use 2 of the 3 double beds or there would be no space at all.
I quite like my husband so sharing with him won't be a problem.
Our main issue is that UK hotels cost an absolute fortune, we have just spent £1500 (about $2700) on a very mediocre week here. In addition UK schools are very anti going on holiday in term-time and all the UK hoteliers know this and screw you on prices. Hence the motorhome idea.

I bought a travel trailer and pulled it for about 1,600 miles - it was not that big, probably about the size that you are thinking of getting. It sounded so nice, we could stop where we wanted to, not have to deal with motels etc.
Reality set in when I burned the transmission and the rain seemed to follow us where-ever we went. Since it was raining I got soaked before everything was set up - we had to stay in the trailer (very cramped) and I never dared to try the 2' X 2' combined shower and bathroom. One good thing is that when you get used to it, you should be able to take a shower while going to the bathroom
I know that a travel trailer is slightly different from a motorhome but the basics are the same when it comes to living conditions.
I'm with Bob, if I ever get a motorhome/travel trailer again it will be one of those huge ones that cost 500,000.00 or more and I'll put my Redneck sticker on the back window just to tick somebody off.
Seriously Pubgirl, I think it takes a special kind of person to really enjoy a motorhome. If you are camping in a tent then you know about your limitations - when you are in a travel trailer or motorhome your mind-set is different and you kind of expect to live the life that is portrayed in the commercials for these vehicles.
My suggestion to you is that you start out by renting one first, try it out and see how you guys like it and then make up your mind as to buy or not.

Exactly what we plan! Regrettably my lovely husband (Big Al- don't think I have ever told anyone on here his name!) is 6'7" so I have spent hours trawling spec's finding motorhomes he will even fit in, height and bedwise! This is how we arrived at an RV as (hush my mouth) you might be a tad bigger than the Europeans! 
We need to rent our preferred model for a couple of days first so we can see if he feels cramped and claustrophobic.
He spent many holidays as an "army" child touring Europe in a very small VW campervan so he already knows the issues, but he wasn't quite as large then.
I need as many of these warning posts as possible as I am contemplating sending £10000- £20000 of our very hard earned cash on this so it mustn't be done lightly or on a whim, I need my eyes wide open.
I would love one of the very large USA RV's which are luxury houses on wheels, but as said before they are mainly illegal here and would cost a fortune to run. Your RV's are all petrol becuase it is cheap for you, you would be stunned if you knew what petrol costs here!

This is what we are using for camping now.
No bathroom or shower but still pretty nice. Relatively inexpensive but still adaquate to keep you comfy camping.
This is the one we will probably be buying some time in the next year.
About $20,000.00. Has a real bathroom, fridge/freezer, A/C, heat. Almost to comfy for me but my wife wants it and things seem to be so much nicer when my wife is happy.

Mr. Merv Grazinski of Oklahoma City Oklahoma. Mr. Grazinski purchased a brand new Winnebago Motor Home.. On his trip home from an O.U. football game, having driven onto the Freeway, he set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the driver's seat to go into the back and make himself a cup of coffee. Not surprisingly the RV left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Mr. Grazinski sued Winnebago for not advising him that in the owner's manual that he could not actually do this. The jury awarded him $1,750,000 plus a new Winnebago Motor Home. The company actually changed its manuals on the basis of this suit just in case there were any other complete morons buying their recreation vehicles.

Try a quick internet search RV and enjoy your gas guzzler. We actually live in ours, but with 36ft. and four slides it's home away from home and no kids. Grandma can get from one end to the other in no time...LOL.

Have found two likely Minnie Winnies here, one is a 1993 just arrived from Florida @ £12k, and one a 1995 @ £18k (these are good prices here) A dealer is asking a staggering £45k (about $81,200.00) would you believe for a 1995!

Sorry to be dim but what would be good mileage on an RV? The 1993 has 60,000, the 1995 has 20,000.
Does that warrant the difference in price?
