MOUND VALLEY, Kansas (AP) -- A Siberian tiger attacked and killed a teenage girl who was posing for photos at a family-run animal sanctuary Thursday in southeast Kansas, authorities said. The Labette County Sheriff's office identified the victim as Haley R. Hilderbrand, 17, of Altamont. A statement from the office said Hilderbrand was at the Lost Creek Animal Sanctuary posing for photos with the 7-year-old tiger, which was being restrained by its handler, when the animal turned and attacked her. Officers and handlers killed the animal. Emergency personnel were not able to revive Hilderbrand. Doug Billingsly and his family opened the 80-acre sanctuary in 1994. According to the sanctuary's Web site, its animals include lions, leopards, tigers and bears. Billingsly didn't immediately return a phone call for comment. http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/08/18/tiger.attack.ap/ This girl was a Sr. at my daughters school. They didn't know each other. What are the odds of dieing in SE Kansas by a siberian tiger.

What a sad waste of life all round, so sorry to hear it Matt. These animals are not pets. They are predators much as I don't ever want to hear of 17 year old kids dying if a restrained animal is able to kill her then someone is to blame and it ain't the cat

It doesn't matter if the cat was bottle fed and raised with love and affection, they are still preditors. You would think that the horrible (Siegfried and) Roy mauling would prove that. We are wrong to captivate and display ( and try to co-exist with) wild animals. What a terrible waste of a young, beautiful life.

Could I please point something out here... It was described as an animal sanctuary. I see nothing inherently wrong with keeping animals at an animal SANCTUARY. These are probably animals that could not be successfully returned to the wild. (It would be awesome to work at a place like that). --- Steve

It is a sad story and people never learn. At the state park near here; black bears run wild which is fine. It's a huge place and you don't go looking for them. When I was a kid, there wasn't so much traffic and you could feed the bears along the road. Fine from the confines of your 1951 Packard. Some idiots got out, tried to get close to the bear and feed it marshmallows, which was the popular thing. They aren't mean but one swipe with a paw and you could lose an arm. Dangerous out there. Wild Animals need space. Cageing them is WRONG! Ever go to the zoo or a nature preserve? If so watch the animals close. The reptails just sit they don't move around. The lions, tirgers, bears, and others they walk back and forth back and forth. They have gone stir crasy. JD and I notices when we went to the nature preserve. That every animal there walked back and forth. All except the ducks and turtles and fish that were free and in the lake. They go mad just like you or I would if we were confine for years in a cage or small area. Its really sad for the animals. It wasn't the cats fault. The trainer and staff should have taken more steps to make sure the girl was protected.

White Oak Plantation nearby is a large center for large wildlife preservation - they have bred hundreds of zebra, rhinos, giraffes and other animals. There are two animal species that the vets never approach without first tranquilizing the beast - tigers and bird of paradise. The bird is like an ostrich, only more territorial. They can kill a person with one graceful kick to the head.
