Quote:
"The message to parents is clear. Parents cannot outsource their responsibility to schools or to law enforcement," said Califano, a former U.S. secretary of Health, Education and Welfare.

A majority of teens said whether it was legal for them to smoke or drink had no bearing on their decision to do so.

"It's a hell of a message to parents," Califano said. "This problem is really going to be solved in the living room and the dining room and across the kitchen table, not in the courtroom or even in the classroom."

This is what it comes down to. Parents must raise their children, not the schools, not law enforcement, it's not their responsibility. It's my responsibility as a parent. If parents don't teach children limits, and reinforce that, how can they be expected to know this in school? Or the real world?

Amen to that, parents must be responsible for teaching values, morals, right and wrong and the dangers of drug use to their children.  Anyone attempting to outsource these responsibilities to schools is making a huge mistake.

I disagree where the article mentions "drug free schools" - I don't believe they exist.  There isn't enough security to frisk every student every time they enter the building to guarantee a "drug free" school.  Parents hoping to avoid exposing their children to drugs by sending them to elite schools are also making a huge mistake.

Let schools address the book learning - everything else is up to the parents.

Would the owner of the propane torch, egg beater, pipe expander and vise grips please claim these items. They're lodged in my head and I need the space.

I agree. However, there are so many children out there who's parents don't do that...
part of the reason we have to teach these things (like charachter education) in schools. So many "lost" children and so many adults who don't care about them...  Cry

LOL Tom...I was thinking the same thing. There is such a thing as a drug free school?
