MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT!
« on: Aug 12th, 2005, 12:26pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

My co-worker and I just got back from lunch and we’re sick.   Embarassed

On the way back, we saw major commotion at an intersection we needed to drive through to get on the highway back to work.  A few minutes prior an SUV and a man on a motorcycle got into an accident. The man that was riding the bike was lying on his side in the middle of the street.  It looked like he was holding his head in his hands, probably in agony.  I noticed his leg first…actually, no leg from mid-calf down  Cry…I just saw a bony stump and blood oozing out of it.  People were running to the gas station across the street to get towels to wrap around his leg.  He also had a big gash on his lower back and I thought I saw blood coming out of his ear.   About 20 feet away I saw his bike on it’s side too…I didn’t see a helmet anywhere though.

I'm thinking his leg somehow got caught in the bike or something to be mangled like that... Embarassed

I hope he's okay and for my family here that ride bikes, please be careful!

Or was the biker blasting the light like most, not all do and got called on it? last week 4 of 4 almost got called on by me, but my wife told me to stop. But got to agree about the cell problem to many people that cant drive already and then think they can talk on the phone while not being able to drive. just not good all ways around that.

I total agree with you on that one!  Have almost been slammed in my little Camry by great big SUV's with yakking drivers on their phones too many times.  Don't get me wrong, our second car is an SUV, but the cell phones are shut off while driving - at least for the driver - in BOTH our cars.

Got to agree sandy cell off for the driver in any car. but especially those mad, aggressive, mean spirited SUV's, Those things will attack totally unprovoked, so be careful on the roads if you see an unmanned SUV run for the hills.

I have a healthy respect for motorcycles, I was raised with them. They can stop much faster than my truck, so I give them plenty of room. This afternoon, I was driving a busy 4 lane road, doing 50-55, and this guy on a motorcycle was weaving in and out of traffic, barely leaving enough room for him to get through. No turn signals, no hand signals, several cars had to brake for the guy. If yer gonna ride, you still gotta follow the rules of the road. If yer in another vehicle, you gotta watch out for the guys/ gals on the bikes. It's a two way street. Ride safe, and pay attention to the road.

Sounds like a horrible wreck....too many VEHICLES on the roads these days and too many distractions......and alot of stupid riders and drivers that are in a hurry. We love ridein but must admit it has gotren alot more risky. We were with our friend 3 weeks ago that went way left of center goin up a steep hill in a park around a curve.....he clipped the vehicle with his leg. Had him out to a campgrounds get together this weekend and made him and his wife dinner. His leg looks aweful......has a new device with pins all over it like the halo's they do on necks. Real big.....but his leg was swollen so tight it was shiney and felt HARD. Not a good color either. Hopein they can save it....too soon to know. Everyone needs to stop look and listen Pam

Cry Langa, I'm sorry he didn't make it.

Jason, my future son-in-law (we hope) had a motorcycle accident about 6 years ago because a pick-up truck ran a stop sign and broadsided him.  Broke his pelvis, both legs, massive concussion.  They had to drill into his head to relieve pressure on his brain.  Was in the hospital for months, then in a wheelchair for several more months.  He has pins and screws all over his body holding him together, and a metal plate in his skull.  His father quit his job to stay home and take care of his son (what a great guy!), because Jason's mom had the higher paying job and could support the family on her own.  Jason no longer had a job, no income, he was 21 years old, and ended up with $400,000 in medical bills neither he nor his parents could pay.  He had to file bankruptcy, and his credit report still shows it, although his FICO scores aren't that bad because he is very careful in paying his bills.  One of those bills is his payment on his Harley!

We like this kid, and we're glad the docs pulled him through so he could meet our daughter!  Now, they live together (yes, in sin), and are buying a house together.  I sure wish he'd pop the question though, but he said he has to as Christine's father for permission first.  Isn't that sooooo cute!   Grin

Bein a life member of A.B.A.T.E for many years (American Bikers About Teaching and Educateing) we have a big helmet issue and are NOT against them tho. Problem is how there made.....restricting hearing and with some of the old ones 'vision' and some are too heavy. And most have a sticker inside that says to 'avoid impact' and some information rates them only protective at 16 mph or less. And they have a tendency to bounce when they do hit the road breaking the neck. But "I do agree on the saftey issues of motorcycles".......the new helmets are so expensive which doesn't help the average rider decide in makein a dicsion to buy one. I'd never speak out against someone wearing one.....we are for free choice. But with more riders and drivers and other distractions with cell phones and now the dam picture phones and text messageing and video games on them it has increased the risk. When we go out anywhere I'd say 60 percent of the people are ON a cell and when in town they are playin with there phone text messageing or reading stuff on it (I don't have one) whatever other then PAYING ATTENTION. Alot of accidents in our town the past year cuz of how built up one side of town has gotten and all the stores and malls and MOST PEOPLE were not payin attention and runnin stops slamming people. A girflrid just got t-boned by a young kid that did NOT stop at a sign and hit her hard rolling her truck. She got scalped and thank goodness she did NOT have the baby with her that time which she USUALLY does !! Plains trains automobiles and motorcycles at risk Pam

Am so so sorry to hear that guy didn't make it.......people jus need to slow down and watch the road.....it's all a person can ask for to make it 'safer' for us all !!! Be safe everyone and take that extra second to look before ya move on or go thru an intersection.

There's been talk of seat belts on bikes and air bags........be interesting what the future holds.

Cootie, after listening to my future son-in law  Jason talk about helmets and from what you just said, I can understand why most bikers don't like to wear them.  I live in NC - helmet laws.  My daughter and  Jason also live in NC, but his family lives in SC - no helmet laws.  We went down to meet Jason's parents this summer.  We followed Jason and Christine to his parent's house, some 25 miles on an expressway - 75 - 80 mph - they were on his bike - no helmets.  I sat in the passenger seat of our car with my heart in my throat watching my youngest child ride on the back of that little, teeny tiny motorcycle - and it is a BIG Harley!  But in comparison to all of the other vehicles on the road, it looked like a tricycle!

As a Mom - helmets, please!

Also, your comment on running red lights - call me old fashioned, or call me just old - if I'm sitting at a red light, and it turns green, guess what.  My foot stays on that brake for a second while I look to my right and my left before proceeding through.  Yes, I have the right of way - no question.  But, it's not worth dying for because invariably, someone, trying to beat the yellow light, blows through the intersection against the red.

Better safe than sorry.

I understand, Cootie. There are certainly just as many arguments against helmets as there are, for them. I've seen some nasty, nasty accidents though, even at very low speeds, and so much damage could have been prevented by wearing a helmet. Then again, who am I kidding? I drive around all the time in my Jeep with the windshield down, wearing a pair of tank goggles. LMAO
