VA docs get lesson in CH

For the past couple of weeks I've been at the VA hospital with Bill (he's been in critical condition). Wellll, Dr. Ben was in his room yesterday and we were calmly discussing his condition when all of a sudden I went from zero to 9 in about 3 seconds flat (not good). I think it shocked me about as much as it did Dr. Ben (been keeping them under control with the topamax lately). I grabbed Bill's O2 off his face, grabbed a mask from his breathing machine stuff, turned the O2 up (my grandson was with me and he was telling me, "Breathe Granny breath!). Poor Dr. Ben was standing there with his mouth open not knowing what to do. Bill was yelling at him, "don't touch her, she'll kill you!"
Anyhow the O2 worked and Granny got calmed down, but I really don't think Dr. Ben will be the same any time soon. I explained to him (after the O2 worked) what had happened and that I wasn't a complete nut case, but I don't think they taught him that in med school (he's young).
He just kept looking at Caleb (my grandson) and wondering why he didn't get excited (Caleb has been thru several of these with me and just takes them as they come now - usually gets the O2 out for me when he sees Granny grab her ear).
After Granny got over the attack, we finished our conversation and Dr. Ben went on his merry way - a little worse for wear, but I think if he ever sees another CH attack, at least he'll recognize it. Education is a great teacher.....

Keep up the good work Barbara. Got to watch those VA Docs. My Dad is a disabled vet. Their solution to everything is drugs. He has a bad heart condition and they had him on so many drugs that he didn't even know that he was haveing heart attacks. Georgia made him go to a cardiologist in Texarkana and that guy was shocked. He broght his meds with him and the new doc took him off 13 different meds, includeing viagra, zoloft, elavil, xanex, welbutrin, and several others. The heart doc called his VA doc a quack and told my dad if he wanted to die just go back to the VA because they were doing a damb good job at it......

That is the wonder of our offspring, AND one of the best teaching devices. When they see that those that are close to us are not overly excited, they think maybe we will survive! Bless his little heart!!

Isn't teaching the medical profession fun?? Sorry you are getting hit, but glad you could put a hit to use. (Also glad to know I am not the only one doing the training!!)
Sorry to hear about Bill, but hope the good Lord resolves it, in the way that is the best for him, soon.

Nice little story kids. It's amazing how well children do handling parents' pain. It's a fairly well-known thing that it must be okay if mom or dad deal with it. They know what they're doing.....school of thought.
Make those quacks think twice before prescribing all those meds, Matt.
Keep educatiing all the medical types, Barb.

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

Man, it makes my blood boil to hear shit like this.
My wife's friend was killed cause she went to the ER puking blood all over the floor, they let her sit for 13 hours. Then they misdiagnosed her and OD'd her on potassium. Wouldnt see her for a week when she called and informed them she was still having terrible pain. she went back to the ER and they realized it was her liver, and they destroyed it more with the toxic potassium. She died when they tried to get her stabilized.
It seems lots of medical professionals have no education or smarts what-so-ever.

I was lucky with my Neuro at the VA.m He took to the idea of O2 right away. Took 45 minutes with the stuff I printed out from the board, and practically threatening to kill him to get the Trex though.
Now I just get my Trex through the GP and everyone is happy.

I can't bitch about the VA docs. I really think they saved Bill's life. We had gone to his regular pulmunary doc the day before we went to the VA and the quack (who'd been treating him for several years) told him he sounded fine and to come back in three months. I told him he'd be dead in three months - he was SICK! He just got condensending and said his lungs sounded fine. The next day I took him to Urgent care at the VA and told them if they didn't do something he was going to die. The doc there got on the ball and ran some tests and told me he was really SICK! (go figure). He put him in the hospital and got on the ball with tests. They found out he had a fungus in his lungs that had gone into his blood and he ended up in ICU. For about a week the prognosis was not good at all. But the docs were great about working to find something to help him.
Yesterday we moved him to a rehab hospital. He's not out of the woods, but he's a whole lot better.
So I guess it's not just neuro's who think they're gods - we can add pulmunologists to that list also. I'm so mad at that kook I could just spit. I've always been against filing malpractice against docs, but I'm about to change my mind. I'm not sure this guy doesn't need a wake up call.
Anyhow - right now, I'm giving the VA a gold star.

All Docs. should be so lucky as to witness a bad attack.
Maybe then they would start to understand that when we say we've had 5 - 6 a night for the past month/months they'll understand why something needs done about this disease. Thanks for sharing.
