SANTA FE, N.M. (July 25) - Actress and activist Jane Fonda says she intends to take a cross-country bus tour to call for an end to U.S. military operations in Iraq.
"I can't go into any detail except to say that it's going to be pretty exciting,'' she said.
Fonda said her anti-war tour in March will use a bus that runs on "vegetable oil.'' She will be joined by families of Iraq war veterans and her daughter.
They plan to return to the Santa Fe area, where she was promoting her book, "My Life So Far'' on Saturday.
Prompted by a question from the audience, Fonda said war veterans that she has met on a nationwide book tour have encouraged her to break her silence on the Iraq war.
"I've decided I'm coming out,'' she said.
Hundreds of people in the audience cheered loudly when Fonda announced her intentions to join the anti-Iraq war movement.
"I have not taken a stand on any war since Vietnam,'' she said. "I carry a lot of baggage from that.''
Fonda incited controversy in July 1972 when she was photographed sitting on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun while on a tour of the country to drum up support to end the war.

I think it's a ballsy move on her part. She's putting herself on the line again for standing up for what she believes. I, for one, respect that. I doubt she would make the same mistake of crticizing the troops (which I never felt was OK).

I can't think of any young veterans, nor any veterans who are old enough to have served in Vietnam, giving her one bit of support. Those guys all fought for her (and our) right to say what ever we want. Most Viet Nam vets I know have gotten over it. War itself is hell enough...holding on to grudges makes life more bitter.

Hey, whatever happened to free speech? Nani, I agree that actions speak much louder than words, and I thought this was a country where diversity of opinion is supposed to be cherished. Jane won't sell more books by doing this--maybe less, and to me that shows real courage. She could just sit back with all her money and "STFU" as Frank would suggest, but her convictions mean something to her.

All I'm saying is, if she wanted to make a statement, that's fine. More power to her. I may not agree, but yes, I would be happy to defend her right to air her views. However, organizing a friggin' crusade.. That just seems way over the top. The potential injury, pain, and damage to troop morale far outweighs whatever benefit she is hoping to gain by this latest publicity stunt.

I'm not sure how to tell you this, Frank...
but many folks are against this war. And very quietly, building up slowly in the shadows...is the next "Anti War Movement". The longer the war goes on, the louder it will get. And sadly, the kids who are out there putting their lives on the line for political reasons and greed will be the only ones really suffering. 
Damn shame....

She can say and do anything she wants, I just don't take any interest in her moral views thats all.
I agree with Frank, she should STFU. Its all about her and the book, she really doesn't give a shit about anybody but herself. She obviously won't stop the war, but she'll create dought, and thats not what OUR men and women in uniform need. They need support, and I support our troops 100%, and so should you. Why doesn't Jane tour the Country in support of Terrorism, same thing isn't it?

I don't think you are giving our troops enough credit regarding their morale. I doubt that Ms Fonda's actions will bring them down if their convictions are solid. And as to her making a "crusade", I don't think a simple press release statement would have any kind of impact. We can support our troops without supporting their cause. One can be a patriot without promoting killing.

First, prove to me that Iraq had anything to do with 9/11 or London.
And...Sean, I don't think it's fair to say I don't support the troops. I support them very much. Which is why I want them all safely stateside, not fighting a personal war for someone. Anybody know where Osama bin Laden is?

By the way, I will say this: When I was in Iraq, we often heard about people slagging off the war, wondering why we were there, saying it was just for oil, blah blah blah... The newspapers, what few we got, were full of this crap. And yes, I can tell you first-hand, that it DOES hurt the morale of the troops.
