Less than 2 hours drive west from the motel, the ghost town of Thurber, TX. In the early 1900's over ten thousand people lived and worked here. Thurber was once home to a large coal mine and produced bricks by the tens of thousands. The discovery of oil in Ranger,TX 30 miles to the west doomed the coal industry......the railroads switched to oil and the demand for coal disappeared.....and so did the town.
