Does anyone in the US get Imitrex by the vial?  Does their insurance cover it? Is it even available?

I use the vials. You should be able to go to any major drugstore chain, and if they don't have it, they should be able to order it for you for the next day.

Yes my insurance covers it.

I just got off the phone with Ins comp & Walmart, the vials as far as I can tell are 6mg, same as 1 shot from the stat dose pen. (Correct me if I am wrong).

I can get 3/2 packs (6mg x2 stat dose refill) for the Stat dose pen OR I can get 12 Vials every 31 days... So I am going to go with the vials.

Sh*t after this pain in my head, I can give myself a shot without any problem..  Undecided

Oh Wally World (Walmart) dais they could order the vials as long as I have a script.. just got to wait 14 mor days..  Cry

The vials are the way to go....its much easier to draw out 2 or 3 mgs...for most that will kill a HA....saving you some for another HA.

They come in 6 milligram /0.5 ML vials.  One vial is equal to the dose that is in one stat-dose cartridge. You fill yer own syringes, and using the vials makes it incredibly easy to split your shots.

I asked for 27 -28 gauge needles on my syringes, I can't even feel them go in. I told my neuro how I slpit the shots, so he gives me however many syringes I tell him I need.

I get mine from Walgreens too, and the last time, they were short a few, so they ordered them, and I had the balance the next day. That goes for any other meds they didn't have in stock or ran short of.

My insurance covers a lot more vials then stat-dose cartidges or nasal spray, but I'm not sure how many a month. Last month I went through 25 vials and they paid for them all.  I normally get 4 cartridges or 8 nasal sprays a month. I got the vials refilled last week, and tried to refill again a few days later to take to Dallas, and my insurance wouldn't do it, I just called the pharmacy and the refill went through this time.

Thats what I found with my Ins Comp, I can get  either:

3 - 2pack refills for the Stat Dose Pen (Every 31 days)
or
12 Vials (Every 31 days)

So my next refills I am going with the Vials.

I use the vials and I split my shots into three. My doctor figured out that 6mg divided into 3 shots would equal 17 units (I am guessing cc) on the shots, but either they put extra in the vial or the Doctor was wrong becouse I can get 3 shots of 20 units from each vial. When you split shots in thirds, besure to have extra shots ready incase the 1/3 shot doesn't work. I was caught unprepared this morning and payed for it.

Syringe measurements are divided into different units. The first vial, pull ALL of it into the syringe so you can see how much is in the syringe you are using. Then release back into the vial 1/3rd, 2/3rds or 1/2. Whatever you want your shot to be. Then remember how much to draw out for the next time.

I keep several syringes loaded at all times, just in case. I can't deal with doing it when I'm getting hit. I keep everything in a hard eyeglass case (idea courtesy of Gator), with an extra trex vial, loaded and unloaded syringes, alcohol swabs, and a piece of cotton to keep things from rolling around too much. And a copy of my script for the vials and for the syringes. Works great for me.

I don't understand your measures but 17 units equals 0.17 cubic centimeters.

I still have two such kits around...(just in case... ya know?  Wink )

I have a stash of vials put away in case of emergency.  A large box of Syringes (well it's half gone but there were 100 of them and it was my second box) in the hall closet.

I also have a pred taper in the fridge and a few bottles of Verapamil all just in case.  I should be set in case this thing morphs on me again and I need to take up conventional arms and have to wait a while to get in to see Pam my HA specialist.

Vials is definately the way to go!

My Neuro wrote the script for 6 stat dose 'kits' instead of refills. With so many pens on hand I decided to modify a couple of them.

I drilled small holes on each side of the pens plunger and inserted a small 'plunger stop'. This pluinger stop can be set to deliver the stat dose in thirds. i.e 1st 'stop' for 1/3 of a fresh cartridge; 2nd stop for next 1/3; and no stop for final third.

The pen and carts. still fit in the stat dose case and there is no fiddling with vials or syringes.
