I have a freind that was haveing heart palps and went in for testing and they discover'd he has a hole in his heart. He mentiond he was on Bextra and Celibrex and is investigateing but I really don't think THAT has anything to do with it.....at all. He says he will need some sorta surgery for it in the near future. He broke his neck in a wreck years ago and I wonder'd if he could of torn the artery off the heart like they are saying pulled off from that ? He got T-boned and his neck was broken and wore one of the metal halo's with steel rods and bolts in his head. I really don't know much about all this and probly should shud up now.....but since a freind is concern'd this thread interested me. Pain the the heart Pam

PS: what he has is NOT a murmer...........

No time to go read the link.  Is it on Patent Foramen Ovale?  Lots on that topic this weekend.  Smiley  It's a bit controversial still, but it is interesting to hear about!

how many of your doctors have suggested looking into the heart thing?  I have seen 4 docs for these things so far (in under 6 years, three of those years I did not have insurance....)  No one ever asked about it or suggested it.

What if?

I mean, seriuosly.  What if?

The initial trial on this was done in Europe and was called "MIST."  MIST-2 is going to be taking place in the United States.  Last night, Teri and I (plus another friend of hers) had dinner with a guy who works for one of the companies that makes the 'patch' (not a very good describing term for what it is, but you get the idea!), and he's very involved with the upcoming MIST-2 study.

Apparently, there are 4 different companies that make materials to use for closing the PFO, and I know last night our dinner partner told us that about 16 major centers across the US are going to be involved.

So far what they've studied is that there is a very small subset of migraine sufferers who may have migraine due to the PFO.  Physicians will be looking at those migraine sufferers for which no treatment has been effective, and many many have been tried.  Some people with PFO have a general feeling of fatigue or that something's 'not right.'  Closure of the PFO so far seems to have been a very successful 'fix' for the fatigue and such related to PFO.  The way they determined that it may be a factor for migraine was that people who had the surgery for other reasons and also had migraine began reporting that the surgery also really stopped or reduced their migraine attacks.  That's how we find out most of our treatments, after all. Wink

PFO is diagnosed by a couple of different tests, and although it can be seen on an echocardiogram, it isn't really picked up on that very often.  They have to do more specific echos that can pick up the PFO.

Like I said in my above post, it's still a controversial theory, but so far this weekend I've heard professionals think that it's valid and some that do not.  I haven't heard any mention of CH related to PFO.

Maybe more will come out in the future related to CH, though!  They often discover things for migraine well before ever exploring them for other headache conditions, as we all know!

(this part I found interesting...)

In other cluster news, research suggests that cluster headache often occurs with a heart defect called patent foramen ovale (PFO). The defect is a small hole in the heart that allows blood to flow from the right to the left of the heart without going through the lungs first. Italian researchers used ultrasound to look for PFO in 40 people with cluster headache and 40 without.  They found evidence of PFO in 17 patients with cluster compared with 7 in the control subjects.
Further studies are needed to better understand the association between the two conditions, but the investigators theorize that blood that bypasses the lungs carries less oxygen than normal and that poorly oxygenated blood may trigger cluster headaches.

article reprinted from Neurology, August and October 2004*

I posted this on May 19, 2005.    This was part of an article found in NHF Headlines.

Quite interesting....
