Stupid doctor stories.....

I talked to a doctor that has been practicing for over 20 years. I was talking to him and told him I had CHs so he asked me to describe them to him.
After i told him what i go through, he told me I dont have clusters cause a cluster cycle only lasts for 2 weeks!! I told him that I chat with dozens of cluster sufferers and that some cycles last for months, and some people are chronic. He informed me that isn't possible and they couldn't have cluster headaches.
So guess which doctor I dont talk to anymore!!!
Lemme hear some more stupid doctor stories about clusters, they're funny!!

I lucked out, my first Neuro diagnosed me in ten minutes, is my age, rides a harley and will give me anything I want when it comes to meds.
I told him about the Imitrex tip and he said "Cool, I will tell my other CH'ers about it"

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

I showed my doc the tip, he gave me a couple statdose samples and a script when I told him that a third of a vial worked as good. When I filled it I got regular little single dose vials instead of the statdose ones, and insulin needles.
He has two other CH patients (won't give me their names ) and told me that he got them to try it also. I am lucky, I have a doc that can still learn, he doesn't know everything already. My past doctors sucked, one sent me to a dentist and the quack pulled three healthy teeth. Another told me that if I was looking for drugs I needed to go elsewhere. I didn't go back to see a doctor for a year and a half. Three untreated cycles. I am pleased with my doc now, when I first got on trex and ins wouldnt cover it, he personaly drove to every doc office in town and got their samples for me, how cool is that.

I'd send some info to that doc with HIGHLIGHTED explaination on ch symtoms and time frames about cycles. Or glue a page with big bold letters on his windshield so he "HAS" to notice that specific part as he is tryin to remove it. Our first doc had no clue.....but he was a cool doctor. Found out he lost his lisence for a while and was no longer allowed to preform surgery so he stayed in the 'general' area cuz he showed up in an operateing room DRUNK. Found all that out later....he tried to treat Brad for anxiety, sinus, and sudjested a dental check up. But after a while he did do some research and sudjested it mite be ch (after about a year of agony and a cycle before that left untreated thinking Brad had a tumor scare)...doc sent us to a neuro and he was diagnoses within a few minutes. Had a therapist tell me I shoud "embrace" the pain. SURE! Right after I "embrace" your neck.

that's how long it took for my diagnosis.
Being female, 24, my teeth were perfect, so it had to be sinus problems......or allergies....or whatever.
Since diagnosis, there have been no allergies, no sinus problems.
My Dr. would only get the reports from emerg. saying it was allergy or sinus related, and I was not one for a lot of follow up visits.
Well, 3 years ago, july 16th, I was hit with a kip 10, right at the end of photographing a wedding. Walking accross the hall to get a drink.....good thing i didn't get to the bar.
Decribed to my Dr. firsthand, what had happened and she had me into the neuro within 3 weeks. Diagnosed on my first visit to him. Medicated (episodic) and coping ever since.
My Dr's learning along with me, but is willing to learn.
Lot of crappy Dr's in our emergency department.........

Last ER visit the Doc asked what was going on. I said CH.
He ordered 02 at 15 with a non rebreather mask and a shot of imitrex stat. and a demerol chaser so I could relax. The nurse was baffled. 02 at 15?
I damn near fell off the table. No wet cloth on the head? ? No lie still and turn down the lights?
Sent me home with a script for pred. and 20 refills of imitrex.
That guy kicked ass.

My first neuro (at U Mass, Worcester) sent me to a shrink, because, and I quote him directly: "Nobody can have as much pain as you pretend to have, and have nothing show on any of your tests .. .. .."

My first neuro handed me prescription pain killers and a script.
Said - "You may never get a diagnosis. If I reduce your pain will that make you happy?" The worst part is that I worked with this guy for two years and actually gave him CH literature and got this result.
Anyone want his name, seems to have the opposite approach of the - If you're looking for drugs - go elsewhere doc.
My next neurologist diagnosed me in 15 minutes and gave me my first break from these things after a 2 year cycle.

This sounds all too familiar. I had two doctors that were quacks. The first one told me to quit smoking and all of my problems would be over. She was really a bitch and did not have any time for me. The second asked me if I had my headaches at the same exact time every day. I told her that I do but they start to shift. For example if I have one at 3 P.M. this week then next week, it may be at 2:30 and so one. She told me that was impossible, people with clusters have the same headache the same exact time every day. She paged through my charts scoffing at everything that was written in them. She took the time to chew on me about it as if I had written them. I never went back. I had a good neuro he retired. It took a while to find someone else that I trusted. Today I have a NP, this guy is great. No more waiting months to see a neurologist he just calls them. The bad thing is no preventive has ever worked for me, just trex.

Before I had an accurate diagnosis for my chronic daily headache type, I was suffering for 8 days and my family doc sent me to the ER for blood tests because he didn't know what to make of it. They pumped me full of painkillers, and then got mad when they had to admit me because I couldn't stop throwing up.
The PA I saw in the ER announced to the entire ER that I "had a headache for attention." The next morning, after my MRI came back, the neurologist on staff (supposedly a pretty decent neuro out this way, too) told me that because I did not have a brain tumor, he could not do anything for me.
It got more and more interesting down the line. Didn't really have any stupid doc stories for a few years...at least not from my regular neuro - had a few related to residents. I had been full-out experiencing clusters prior to seeing the new neuro -- it all seemed to spin into place after a blow to the head by an ice rink
Anyhow...the new neuro - same office - actually had more experience, he told me that there was no point in treating or aborting the [CH]. Passed it off as idiopathic stabbing headache (ice picks), I do believe. I hadn't gone to the ER for about 2-3 years prior to that since that woman had told me my headaches were for attention.
The day after that appointment in November 2003 was the first time I'd gone to the ER for any headache since the very first time I had the other type. Went in with a full-out cluster lasting about 4 hours despite everything I threw at it. By the time they treated me, the beast finally took the fangs out of my skull... Been to the ER several times since then...often connected to some rather stooooopid stories.
Ah well...life goes on, eh?

I have been to so many docs it is pathetic. I used to be intimidated by men in white coats, and use to fear them. After a few years of CH, that kind of changed - just a weeee bit. I remember a few year ago I when to this bitch who was supposed to be the headache expert at SLU. She put me on all kinds of shitty meds that actually did nothing for the CH's but gav me lost of other side effects and problems. She had me on a high dose of Neurontin for two months. I started having very bad side effects after awhile, and I knew that was what was causing it. I call her office complaining of vertigo, loss of balance, and involuntary muscle jerks. She calls back and says "Double the Neurontin dose." HUH? WHAT?
Like a dumbass, I tried that for 3 days and after that experience, weaned myself off of it altogether. I had taken some info from the message board and gave to her, while she opened her thick witchdoctor book and was searching for something and she chewed me out for stopping the Neurontin. She said "You have to stay on i if it is going to help you." I just replied "Well after the last two months I would think that if I am having these bad fucking side effects, if it was gonna do any good, it would have." Then I got up from my chair and started to walk out and asked "Before I walk out that door and never come back again, give me one good reason why I should return here?"
"You can't treat yourself."
"Ah, and obviously you can't treat me either so, have a good day." And never went back.
That is Dr Christine Birch @ St Louis University. I don't recommend her.
There are so many fun stories I could tell, but am too tired. Maybe that means I will sleep soon - I hope.

My GP diagnosed me, and then sent me for evaluation by a Vanderbilt neurologist. The guy takes me to an exam room and then begins talking to me about cluster headaches. He even has a poster on the wall with a man with a flashpoint over one eye, with the signs and symptoms listed on either side of the man. He goes to great lengths to point out that the word "migraine" is not listed anywhere on that poster. Then, he writes me a script for Depakote, oral Imitrex, and writes on the Rx script, "For cluster migraines." I asked him about high-flow oxygen, and he said, "You don't look cyanotic to me." I walked out of his office gritting my teeth with tears in my eyes, because I was so angry.
I went back to my GP, armed with the medical print-out from this site, with my specific symptoms hi-lighted, along with treatments/medications specific to cluster headaches. She sat down, read through it, and then with a wonderfully compassionate smile, nodded and said, "Okay... Okay... I think I can work with you on this." I was so happy, relieved, and grateful, I had tears in my eyes.
By the way, the neurologist's name is Dr. Bill Atalla, and he maintains his office in the Medical Arts Building in Shelbyville, TN. (Vanderbilt Clinic)
My GP's name is Dr. Lynette Adams, who also maintains her office in Shelbyville, TN. Excellent, excellent physician. (Also located in the Medical Arts Building)

My favorite was one morning getting hit a few years ago. I felt a hit coming but proceeded to hop in the car like I could ignore it. Well, it was one of those hits for the records books and i'm actually trying to drive. I realize i'm very near this neuro's office that I had gone to years before. So, I think, I'll just try to go in and beg for O2, a shot of anything, just make the front desk aware that I was experiencing something really horrible and that it I could likely not drive my car any further. Tears are just streaming down my face and my eye is hanging, the whole nine yards.
"Well, what kind of insurance do you have?" say the receptionist.
"I've got Blue Cross."
"I'm sorry, we can't work with you sir"
"But I'll gladly just give a credit card right now if someone can help me. I'll pay for it right out, I don't care about insurance."
"I'm sorry sir."
"Can't you see that I am in the middle of a major neurological experience here, I am having a cluster headache that is unbelieveable right NOW. I am in agony right this moment and you're saying you can't even ring the doctor to see if he would understand that he might be able to help me."
"I'm sorry sir, the Dr. can not help you."
There may have been a smattering of f-bombs on the way out but that was about it. Nice people, eh?
So I went out to my car and cried for 20 minutes with my face pasted to the AC vent and then drove to work.
The doctor's office was Demas Neurology in Charlotte, NC.
