My poor pup

Well, she's not a pup anymore.  Polly is now 1-1/2 years old and lived thru the four unplanned last minute hurricane evacuations of last year, so when I decided to do a good cleaning on the lanai (screened porch) and started stackind and moving stuff around, she went into panic mode.

Everytime I move furniture, she hides under my bed and pants.  I feel so sorry for her.

Last year she lived in her little pen for days at a time and in strange places with driving rain, wind, lightning and thunder.....not to mention nervous masters and aunts and uncles, and cousins.

Guess I'll have to see the vet about some Valium for my little girly Beagle.  It's supposed to be another very active season.  Think I'll get some Valium for myself too! LOL.  On second thought, I'll make that a few Buds instead.

My beagle is terrified of the vacuum cleaner, the broom and water. I mean TERRIFIED too.. it upsets me. I wonder if he was hurt by any of those means as he was a rescue dog and when we got him he was in a bad way poor baby. Storms don't bother him though so I think you just have a big ole baby there!

Jiji The Black (RIP) was terrified of two things: Thunderstorms, and a red broom that we have. He wasn't afraid of the vacuum cleaner, though. I can understand thunderstorms, but being scared of a red broom? laugh

Kiki isn't afraid of anything. Either that, or she's just too damn lazy to jump off the back of the couch. LOL

I looked at her when I was vacuuming the house, and she said, "Here comes the vacuum cleaner. I suppose I could cower, but nawww, I'll just lie here and lick myself. Vacuum my house, peasant!"  laugh

ok, i'm convinced.  My two are lunatics.

We have vacuflo in our house.  Barly (dog) STANDS in front of the hose when we start to vacuum.  You had to "do" him first, before you do the floors.  He LOVES being vacuumed.   Roll Eyes

Moxie (cat) is totally deaf now.  She used to be scared of the vacuum cleaner.  Last month, Mike put the vacuum on her back while she was sleeping, keeping a finger over the opening so there wasn't huge suction.  She loved it.  Now that she can't hear it, it's not so scary any more I guess.  So we figure it's best to get the animal hair at the source of the problem and saves us a lot of time if we do "the kids" before we do the floors.

Let me make something perfectly clear......

In my original post, I said she hides under my bed and pants.  None of you good people saw the error, but in re-reading it, I did and want to correct it to read.....

She hides under my bed, dangles her dripping tongue and breathes hard.  I do not have pants under my bed, but I do know a guy whose shoes I wouldn't mind under there.

Not to worry kids. Of all the countless dogs that I've known, I know of only one that didn't go ballistic when a vacuum cleaner was started up.

Animals tend to fear what they can't comphrehend.....they don't understand storms esp when they have been thru alot of bad ones suddenly and not used to them younger like sum of us get now !! Sum of my house cats and Jack Russle (he's outside cuz he was a bad bad bad dog inside running 24/7 chaseing the cats) are TERRIFIED now days of storms !! Had a bad one years ago and we were out camping.....a tornado went overhead.....were down in a steep valley surrounded by hills.......it twisted all the branches off of some of the trees like toothpicks and a huge tree as big around as a car up on the hill was twisted off it's base and fell down the hill going across the yard just missing the house all the way to the other hill near the garage. Had to of made a HORRIBLE crash and been an aweful storm. And I wasn't hear to protect them........now they are freaked out by thunder and storms. The jack russle is so flipped out I expect him to have a heartattack onea these days when one rumbles thru cuz he goes balistic running and jumping and whineing and panting bug eye'd. (he's an old dog too) Heck I run around here doin the same I am so scared too. Panty pants Pam

I had a kitten who slept for about 20 hours a day on a sheepskin that protected an armchair. He did that for the first year and a half after we moved to this apartment. Then, one morning a 5 o'clock, a group of kids passed by, making a terrific noise with big bass drums and other percussion instrument, to celebrate the start of carnival season. Kitty was so frightened he didn't go back to his sheepskin and when I tried to put him there, he fought back with teeth and claws and ran off as soon as possible. This lasted for more than a year, until one evening he stood up from his new sleeping place, jumped on the sheepskin, curled up and went to sleep. From then on the old sleeping place was acceptable again.

Ahhh yeah my dog is a black lab named Jake.  He's 11...I don't think he would enjoy hurricane season down here much either, Donna!!!

He used to be afraid of the vaccuum...(no, I can't ever remember how to spell it, and I'm too lazy to see if that's wrong or not!)  Now, he's an old pup, so you can bring the little vaccuum into the kitchen and he doesn't even move his head.

It's funny because he does get freaked out easily.  He won't walk near the suitcases or couch in the basement (he has claustrophobia probably!).  He barks at bags of leaves in the driveway.  He is NOT a fan of any trashcan, no matter how small...  When I took trumpet lessons a few years ago, he ran out of the house. <g>  He does not mind the piano, the flute, or the clarinet...but he hates the bass clarinet.  Prolly cuz I took it into the kitchen and blasted out the low notes just to see his reaction.  (Wasn't as bad as it sounds!  Nobody go calling the ASPCA...!)  It's funny cuz usually the high frequencies really bother them...he just didn't like the fog horn sounds from the bass..haha

He is a lab...and he's afraid of water.  He does, however..try to bite the water coming out of the hose.  (I do believe he's trying to conquer his fear then...)

He's not afraid to go places in the house where he knows he shouldn't be if me, my mom, or brother are home.  If my dad's home...you can bet he's running to the kitchen to be a good dog!!

He's not afraid to eat chocolate cake...even though I'm convinced he knew when he ate 2/3'rds of that sucker that chocolate is BAD for dogs!  He also wasn't afraid the time when he got a knife off the kitchen counter and proceeded to run like a maniac around the kitchen table...blade pointed towards the back of his throat...  HE wasn't afraid....I, however, was petrified...and about age 14 and home alone!  haha

He doesn't like the usual things...the mail man, fed ex, school buses.  But those don't make him hide...he just barks a lot.  He doesn't like to go outside in rain or snow, particularly!  Sometimes he finds his old crate from the puppy years in the basement...he will crawl inside and not come out...no matter what we do!  Now that one, I don't get...  He doesn't like grapes, although my father thinks he does.  However, he will eat bananas still in the peel...and cupcakes...

We have to sometimes leave the tv on because he hears all the noises in the house and outside and then barks.  If the tv is on, he is much calmer!  Probably cuz the kennel has a big screen tv just for the dogs.  (Funny how he got to watch that starting 11 years ago, and we just got ours 2 years ago! hehe)

He was DEFINITELY afraid to get on a bean bag bed.  Didn't like that one bit.  He also doesn't like the big scale at the vet...or the vet, in general.  He especially fears the flea bath...and while again, thrashing around like a maniac...manages to get the flea bath on everyone around.

He's not afraid of the basement door opening and swinging by his head by a millimeter.  Great at judging distance!!  But then...he constantly bangs his head on the kitchen table...cuz he forgets it is there, in his excitement to be around people while eating. haha

Most importantly...he is not afraid of my cluster attacks.  He's not afraid of my bad days, good days, insane days.  And even though now he grumbles a lot more (with the arthritis)...he's still the most comforting friend to sit down next to at 3am when ya just need a break from life.

My mom told me that I need to prepare for him being old.  Our last lab died when I was 8 or 9.  I think I'm going to lose my mind when Jake goes.  No matter how much I know he's getting old, he's still my puppy.  So..I know I'll never be prepared for that.

Oh and yeah...he really IS scared to move when the electric fence beeps while he's still about 10 feet away from the line.  However, if it doesn't beep and the battery is low...he has on occasion walked right on through. LOL  If I want to take him on a walk, I have to put him in the car, drive him over the electric fence line, and then park the car on the street...just so I can take the maniac for a walk...or rather, he drags me up the street while my shoulder is ripping apart.  He won't budge even without the beeps when you try to get him down the driveway...  He stops way before the fence and then sits down and will NOT move.  Funny that I have to take the car to get him out!

Aren't dogs great??? Smiley
