Yet another ungrateful ally

This from the BBC: Police in Seoul, South Korea, line up in the rain as they stand guard during an anti-US rally. Oh really? Maybe these ungrateful fuckers would like us to move out of the DMZ then huh? We've been babysitting and protecting their undeserved asses for 50 years while their counterparts are in actual gulags in the North unable to speak or leave the country without getting a bullet in their back! (Note to Amnesty International: a real prison crises folks, where are you? ) My guess is that inside of 72 hours after US presence has left the puppet nation of South Korea Kim Il Jung would move his tanks in, force his will, and unify the Koreas once again. Shame on you South Korea.

The same people over there that don't like us are the same people here that don't like us. We are a good wipping boy for all their ills. Let them have their say, then get back to work, just like here the few dont speak for the majority. They just want you to think so. Besides my dad told me that it was a ROK unit that saved his life, and the lives of all the men on his helicopter when he was shot down in '68. Those ROK units are well respected, and appreciated, at least by me.

The college students have been demonstrating and rioting against the US for many years. When I was stationed in Korea in 1987-1988 a trip to Seoul could be an interesting experience. More than once I caught the bus to Yongsan Army Garrison and we drove right through the middle of a protest. One in particular, I remember seeing people carrying Molitov c0cktails. THAT was nerve racking - riding in a bus full of American GI's literally through the middle of that protest. I used to walk around Seoul with my "hiking buddy," a tall blonde female, checking out all the sights. Those same people demonstrating in the streets in the morning would come up to us that evening trying to practice their English (required learning in South Korea) and we would usually end up in a Soju tent with 3 or 4 students buying us food and drink while we talked. I had a blast.

| We've never left Korea. We've got troops all along the DMZ and have bases scattered throughout the country. The Korean War never actually ended, they are just living under a 50+ year old cease-fire. Technically, every person serving on the Korean peninsula is still serving in a war zone. Winter is an especially anxious time In South Korea. That's when the river between North and South Korea freezes up enough for the North to roll it's tanks across it. We stayed on alert the entire winter I was there. It is my understanding there are still firefights (there were back in 87-8 along the DMZ and they are constantly finding tunnels the North are digging to move troops across the DMZ. They found one when I was there big enough to move tens of thousands of troops through in a very short period of time. The older folks definitely appreciate us being there. It's the young idealistic college kids that are the biggest source of anti-American protests.

We could give them what they wish. Total pull out of their nation. No more money, no more concrete, no more economy, no more protection. What would we loose???? The KIA automobile????? Revtech engines and transmissions????? Korean steel???? My personal imput is bag the whole dayumm planet. Lets bring our guys and gals back home-----and attempt to keep our ducks in a row. We are exporting our jobs to attempt to create a "level playing ground" for the world economy----while hurting our own population. Seems to me that within the next 1,000 years, were all either gonna become one Earth, or will become a dead planet. We already have energy problems, economic problems, and a great lack of food for everyone alive. The almighty economy is already killing us all----in polution alone!!!!! Eventually, we will send our virous "human disease" into space in order to obtain the natural materials we require to keep our species alive. Will cockroaches and rats eventually rule our planet, or shall we decide now to interact friendly with the nations of our own earth??? We are currently making those decisions for our great grandchildren

Gator has it right. He should know. It's old hat and not unique. Nobody likes occupiers after a time and 50 years is just that. Damn it though. I know little about South Korea. I probably know more on North Korea because of its news interest of late. Charlie

| The term "Occupiers" has the connotation that we are in control by military force. We are not "Occupiers" in Korea. We are in no way in control over there militarily or otherwise. Our military does not patrol the streets, enforce any civilian law, assist with civil unrest or any such thing. Neither does theirs for that matter. That's all handled by their civilian law enforcement personnel. Our military stays on it's bases and conducts separate and joint training with the host nation's military. We are in a protector mode, both by their request and in our best interests, that I don't see ending anytime soon unless and until something happens with North Korea.
