Alot of my family are Mormons who are really big on geneology. The first Matlocks came to America in 1642 on the ship Griffith, and landed in New Kent NJ. George III and John Matlock were Quaker indentured servants. I am directly desended from John.  George went back to England after his 10 years was up but left his boys. The furthest back in a direct line is George Sr. He is buried at St Giles Church in Nottinghamshire England. He died in 1534.

If you are doing research i can send you some good links, and the Mormon Church has an open database that has information on alot of families.

Mine are all Swedes who probably changed their names to avoid the Swedish army. It was pretty big at one time.

Seriously, the name was changed in the 1880s and we've never been able to track the horsethieves.

My family on both has been keen to know about the ancestors. My dad's bunch even published a family book! But no big surprises, though. Lots of Finns... Wink

That reminds me... I should actually read that book one of these days. I have read parts of it. I know that my last name could be 5 other ones, too. We've changed it a lot in the past.

And I'm still eager to find out which one of my ancestors have been such a party animal that my last name has been turned into a verb meaning recless partying... Grin

Alot of Family names were changed for several reasons, dureing  the  1700s and early 1800s most people couldn't read or write, so when the census takers came around they spelled the peoples names how they sounded. That is how my family got its variants Medlock, Mattox, Matlack, and Matoak.
On the Robinson side of the family, I have copies of the records where the name was changed from Robertson because the Continental Army was sending his mail to another person.

Maffu (Oh I love that name!  laugh ) Matlock is a place here, its lovely - somewhere we take the kids alot. Its famous for Blue John if you are interested in rocks and minerals at all. If you want me to go to St Giles and find his headstone (if its still there) I will and take a pic for you!

There are two St Giles Maffu, one in West Bridgford which is about ten miles from me and one in Matlock which is about an hour away (but as I said its somewhere we like to go!) I shall attempt to get to both if you aren't sure which before Dallas and then I can take loads of pictures etc for you too. Its nice you have history from right by where I live.. convenient huh?!! I did discover that jonny's family tree contains no branches.

Another link told me that Don has too much clorine in his gene pool.

I'm just here to help and share information as I discover it.
