wheew that's a lot of information. Talk about a walking encyclopedia. 10 years to paint Mona Lisa's lips.... I know artists like to redo, redo and redo... but 10 years...... That's dedication.

lol...not that I'm off on an obsessive trip here, but with time to kill, I discovered this: The Bunk is DE-Bunked Monday, February 9th I'm sure you have seen these all before. Thanks goes out to Scott Keith for debunking some of these popular myths for us. 40 Things You May Not Know!!! 1. Money isn't made out of paper; it's made out of cotton. True. Or at least close enough to the truth. 2. The 57 on Heinz ketchup bottle represents the varieties of pickle the company once had. False. http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_195.html 3. Your stomach produces a new layer of mucus every two weeks - otherwise it will digest itself. (yuck) True. That's where ulcers come from. 4. The Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper. Probably true, hemp was widely used for paper until the 20th century. 5. The dot over the letter 'i' is called a "tittle". True. http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=tittle 6. A raisin dropped in a glass of fresh champagne will bounce up and down continuously from the bottom of the glass to the top. The laws of thermodynamics suggest otherwise. 7. Susan Lucci is the daughter of Phyllis Diller. False. Her parents are Italian and Swedish. 8. A duck's quack doesn't echo ... no one knows why. FALSE. The Bunk is DE-Bunked 9. 40% of McDonald's profits come from the sales of Happy Meals. No way to verify one way or another, so I'm guessing it's BS. 10. Every person has a unique tongue print (no licking at the scene of a crime!). True. http://www.health24.co.za/default_old.asp?action=article&ContentID=1 7239 11. 315 entries in Webster's 1996 Dictionary were misspelled. False. There is no such thing as "Webster's Dictionary". There's a variety of dictionaries published that use the name, all from different companies. This one has been circulating for a long time, even before 1996. 12. The 'spot' on 7UP comes from its inventor who had red eyes. He was albino. False. There's no story about CL Grigg, creator of 7Up, being an albino. In fact, we don't even know why he named it 7Up. "Well, direct from http://www.7up.com/info/history.cfm, here is the official story… The Seven-Up Company's roots go back to 1920, when C. L. Grigg banked on his 30 years of experience in advertising and merchandising to form The Howdy Corporation in St. Louis, Mo. Although he named the company after the Howdy Orange drink he pioneered, his goal was to create a wholesome and distinctive soft drink that would prove irresistible to the nation's consumers. He spent more than two years testing 11 different formulas of lemon-flavored drinks, finally settling on one that best met his two goals: refreshing and thirst-quenching. Grigg introduced his new soft drink two weeks before the stock market crashed in October, 1929. It was a caramel-colored, lithiated lemon-lime soda, which he positioned as a drink with a "flavor wallop" to market alongside the already-successful Howdy Orange drink. It cost more than its competition and had an unwieldy name, "Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda." At the time, more than 600 lemon-lime soft drinks were already in the marketplace. In spite of the obstacles, the new brand sold well. Shortly afterwards, Grigg changed the brand's name to 7 UP. Although C. L. Grigg never explained the origin of the soft drink's name, many stories abound. The most popular story is that Grigg named the soft drink after he saw a cattle brand with the number "7" and the letter "u." Other stories suggest that the name reflects the drink's seven flavors and carbonation, or that Grigg came up with the name while playing dice. " 13. On average, 12 newborns will be given to the wrong parents daily. Hi, welcome to the year 2005, where we have DNA testing. FALSE. 14. During the chariot scene in 'Ben Hur' a small red car can be seen in the distance. True. You can also see one of the gladiators wearing a watch and tire tracks from the camera truck in the sand. 15. Warren Beatty and Shirley MacLaine are brother and sister. True.

16. Chocolate affects a dog's heart and nervous system; a few ounces will kill a small sized dog. Very much true, sadly. http://www.barkbytes.com/medical/med0011.htm 17. Orcas (killer whales) kill sharks by torpedoing up into the shark's stomach from underneath, causing the shark to explode. False. Quite in the opposite, in fact. http://www.tangalooma.com/dolphinweb/schoolprojects/theme5.asp 18. Most lipstick contains fish scales (yuck). True. http://www.straightdope.com/columns/000331.html 19. Donald Duck comics were banned from Finland because he doesn't wear pants. False. http://www.snopes.com/disney/films/finland.htm 20. Ketchup was sold in the 1830s as medicine. False. Ketchup wasn't INVENTED until the late 1800s. 21. Upper and lower case letters are named 'upper' and 'lower' because in the time when all original print had to be set in individual letters, the 'upper case' letters were stored in the case on top of the case that stored the smaller, 'lower case' letters. Everything on Google seems to suggest this is true. 22. Leonardo da Vinci could write with one hand and draw with the other at the same time ( ... and multi-tasking was invented). The official Da Vinci website doesn't say anything about that, but he DID have peculiar writing habits... http://www.mos.org/sln/Leonardo/LeonardoRighttoLeft.html 23. Because metal was scarce, the Oscars given out during World War II were made of wood. False. Sort of. From the official Oscars website... "Q. What material was the Oscar statuette made of during World War II? A. In support of the war effort, the Academy handed out plaster Oscar statuettes during WWII. After the war, winners exchanged the plaster awards for golden statuettes. " 24. There are no clocks in Las Vegas gambling casinos. Depends on the casino, but generally true. 25. The name Wendy was made up for the book Peter Pan, there was never a recorded Wendy before! False. http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mpeterpanwendy.html 26. There are no words in the dictionary that rhyme with: orange, purple, and silver! Orange certainly. For the others, it depends what you mean by "rhyme". "Quicksilver" rhymes with silver. While there's no other words using the "-urple" sound to rhyme perfectly with purple, there's plenty ending with "-ple" which can count as a rhyme for the purposes of writing songs or poetry. 27. Leonardo Da Vinci invented scissors. Also, it took him 10 years to paint Mona Lisa's lips. False. Although there is a fascinating story behind the Mona Lisa, there's no firm accounts of exactly how long it took him to paint it, certainly not down to the lips. As for scissors, he drew sketches of thousands of things, scissors probably among them. However, he made very little in reality. .

28. A tiny amount of liquor on a scorpion will make it instantly go mad and sting itself to death. Very doubtful. 29. The mask used by Michael Myers in the original "Halloween" was a Captain Kirk mask painted white. Not quite. It was a mask used by William Shatner in the movie "The Devil's Rain", recycled for budget purposes. 30. If you have three quarters, four dimes, and four pennies, you have $1.19 You also have the largest amount of money in coins without being able to make change for a dollar ( ... good to know ..). True. And in fact there are 293 different ways to make change for a dollar, while we're on the subject. 31. By raising your legs slowly and lying on your back, you can't sink in quicksand (and you thought this list was completely useless). True, although that goes for any body of water in general. 32. The phrase "rule of thumb" is derived from an old English law, which stated that you couldn't beat your wife with anything wider than your thumb (sign of a true civilized society ... not). False. And if you want the whole legal research behind disproving it, here ya go... http://www.urbanlegends.com/language/etymology/rule_of_thumb.html 33. American Airlines saved $40,000 in '87 by eliminating one olive from each salad served in first class. True. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/3073562/ 34. The first product Motorola started to develop was a record player for automobiles. At that time, the most known player on the market was the Victrola, so they called themselves Motorola. False. " The company was founded by Paul V. Galvin as the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation, in Chicago, Illinois, in 1928. Its first product was a "battery eliminator," allowing consumers to operate radios directly from household current instead of the batteries supplied with early models. In the 1930s, the company successfully commercialized car radios under the brand name "Motorola," a word suggesting sound in motion. During this period, the company also established home radio and police radio departments; instituted pioneering personnel programs; and began national advertising. The name of the company was changed to Motorola, Inc., in 1947." 35. Celery has negative calories! It takes more calories to eat a piece of celery than the celery has in it to begin with. It's the same with apples! (guess what I'm buying on my next trip to the grocery store!) True for celery, not for apples. 36. Chewing gum while peeling onions will keep you from crying! Not touching your eyes while peeling onions will keep you from crying. Chewing gum has nothing to do with it. 37. The glue on Israeli postage stamps is certified kosher. True. 38. Guinness Book of Records holds the record for being the book most often stolen from Public Libraries. Guinness themselves listed that in their 1978 edition, although I think perhaps it might have changed since then. 39. Back in the mid to late 80's, an IBM compatible computer wasn't considered a hundred percent compatible unless it could run Microsoft's Flight Simulator game. Speaking from experience, that is absolutely true. 40. Astronauts are not allowed to eat beans before they go into space! Because passing wind in a space suit damages them. False. In fact NASA specifically studied flatulence in detail before the space program started to make sure they could deal with it. The big problem was the methane gasses getting trapped, not damage to the suits. Chris - must find something else to do now

Actually, you don't have to touch your eyes while peeling onions to tear up. It's a vaporous gas that stimulates the tear ducts: "Onions produce the chemical irritant known as syn-propanethial-S-oxide. It stimulates the eyes' lachrymal glands so they release tears. Scientists used to blame the enzyme allinase for the instability of substances in a cut onion. Recent studies from Japan, however, proved that lachrymatory-factor synthase, (a previously undiscovered enzyme) is the culprit (Imani et al, 2002). The process goes as follows: 1. Lachrymatory-factor synthase is released into the air when we cut an onion. 2. The synthase enzyme converts the sulfoxides (amino acids) of the onion into sulfenic acid. 3. The unstable sulfenic acid rearranges itself into syn-ropanethial-S-oxide. 4. Syn-propanethial-S-oxide gets into the air and comes in contact with our eyes. The lachrymal glands become irritated and produces the tears!" The root section of the onion has a higher concentration of the enzyme, so you can reduce the reaction by cutting more of the root section off prior to slicing. You can also reduce the amount of tearing agents in the air, by slicing the onion under water. PFDAN................................... Drk^Angel

Chocolate and quick sand..... Chocolate: I once had a dog who was probably about 10 - 12 pounds who got into a 1 pound bag of almond Hershey Kisses and ate all of them. She was a chocolate freak and survived all of her chocolate eating. Probably a rare case but it never seemed to have any effect on her. Quick sand: I saw an interesting show about quick sand on Myth Busters one day and they proved that the human body will not sink all the way under in quick sand no matter what the person is doing. The human body is more bouyant than the quick sand and will only sink to about shoulder height. When pushed under, you will float back up and out like a fishing bobber.

The story of my dog and the almond Hershey Kisses is classic. One day, while getting ready to go to work, I tried to eat one of these pieces of candy. My wife told me she would break my fingers if I touched them. (This is what she gets for not sharing.) When we got home that afternoon, we couldn't find the candy. They're pretty hard to miss since they are wrapped in gold colored foil. She blamed me. I blamed the kids. Everybody was pissed at each other. The next morning, I wake to the sound of my wife laughing like a maniac, I come in to find her laughing at the 5 or 6 golden turds laying on the dining room floor. Case closed. I'm innocent.

When I read that list, I did wonder that was Donald Duck comics once banned here in Finland. I know for a fact that they're not now. When I was a kid, my aunt subscribed Donald Duck comics for me for years. I have saved them all... they're at our summer cottage. I read them on a rainy day. Naturally, Donald Duck isn't called that in here but Aku Ankka!

18. Most lipstick contains fish scales (eeww). Fish scales were also used in metallic car paint to give it sparkle. 20. Ketchup was sold in the 1830s as medicine. In the Caribbean Islands you can get Banana Ketchup. It’s made from bananas instead of tomatoes. 24. There are no clocks in Las Vegas gambling casinos. And you’ll be damn lucky to find a drinking fountain. (“Buy a beer ya cheap SOB!”) 38. Guinness Book of Records holds the record for being the book most often stolen from Public Libraries. And the Bible is the most stolen book from motels.

In China, ketchup was a pickled fish sauce. BTW ckelly... You're wrong about ketchup. Ketchup has been around for centuries, and the first tomato ketchup recipe was published in the early 19th century. You must be thinking of HJ Heinz ketchup which came out in 1872.
