I haven't done anything like that but I think the first thing you'd need is a video card that has a TV input on it.

A video capture card would most likely have it and may even come with some software that would do it for you.

Casettes to CD?

Get an adapter to plug your cassette player into the input on your sound card. You should be able to find a good shareware program for recording audio.

After you've recorded the audio, you should be able to save to what ever format you want and then burn your CD.

I dont know if this will work or not but it is a thought. If your sound card and monitor card has a line in, and your vhs recorder should have a line out, you could pull up you WMP and record it that way, or a easier way but more expensive would be to buy a VHS with dvd recorder and watch and burn at the same time. I am not even sure the first way will work but in theory it sounds good.

VHS audio:
All you need is a VHS player with component video out, RCA to 1/8" stereo plug Y adapter, a sound card with a line-in port, and audio recording software (like Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/).  Plug the red and white component cables from the player into the Y adapter, and the Y adapter into the sound card line-in jack.  Then use the audio capture application to record from the line-in jack.

VHS/8mm audio/video:
I'll assume that you have a well enough video card, so all you'll need is a video capture card, or TV tuner card with component video in, and a VHS player or 8mm camcorder with component audio/video out, a Y adapter like I described above, a line-in port on your sound card, and a DVD writer.  Plug the audio component cables as described above.  Plug the yellow video component cable into the capture card, and follow the card's instructions for setting up the card, and recording from the component/RCA/Aux port of the card.  Here's a low cost video capture card I found at Newegg:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815100120 I've never used this card myself, but the rating on the site is good, and it appears as though it even comes with the software needed to create DVDs.  Good luck.

P.S.  If you're going to use a TV tuner card, you may need to pick up a 2 1/8" to 1 1/8" Y adapter to be able to plug the TV tuner card, and video player to the same line-in, or just unplug the tuner's cable, and plug in the player's audio when you're doing the conversion.

If your player has an S-Video out port, here's a low cost capture card with S-Video in:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814100005

For a couple bucks more, you can get a TV tuner card:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814160026

Video:

If you don't want to mess with your computer internals, you can get an external, USB, video capture device.  Dazzle is a common one.

Doing it on your computer is a long drawn out deal though.  First you play the VHS tape and capture it onto your computer.  Then you can audit the video, add special effects or background music.  Next it is transcoded to DVD format and then burned to DVD.  A 2 hour VHS could take up to 8 hours to transfer to DVD.

Cat mentioned a while back that there are combination VHS/DVD burner units which can transfer the video to DVD in the time it takes to play the tape.

Bob's right about the VHS/DVD recorders.  They carry a heavy price, but it's worth it for the simplicity of it.  Most even have component jacks, so you can hook your camcorder for recording.  And if you have a digital camcorder, many even have IEEE 1394 (Firewire) and other digital connections.  Might have to get this when I win the powerball tomorrow:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16882101307

A month ago I bought a DVD recorder, and if Sony could write understandable manuals I could connect it to the VHS recorder and transfer my old tapes before their coating crumbles to dust.    Shocked
