OK....politically, some people may think badly of this, but it's a good cause (watch the video, read the site, etc):

Good video!
I visited also one.org. Good site, too.
I found out that there's two people to contact even here in Finland!

Sandie,

I thought it was pretty great, too.

At some point when I was supposed to be staying awake at the sleep study, I saw that video as a commercial on tv.  So I looked up the one.org website today and signed the petition and emailed it to 5 others.  I'm already signed up through one of the Philadelphia AIDS campaigns, and I see that one.org links up with DATA which is the org in Pennsylvania to get in touch with.

It reminds  me of this song by Sweet Honey in the Rock:

"For each child that's born
A morning star rises
and sings to the universe
Who we are.
For each child that's born
A morning star rises
And sings to the universe
Who we are.

We are our grandmother's prayers.
We are our grandfather's dreamings.
We are the breath of the ancestors.
We are the spirit of God.

We are mothers of courage
Fathers of time
Daughters of dust
Sons of great visions
We're sisters of mercy
Brothers of love
Lovers of life
And builders of nation

We're seekers of truth
And keepers of faith
Makers of peace
Wisdom of Ages

For each child that's born
A Morning Star Rises
And Sings to the Universe
Who we are

WE ARE ONE."

Try also looking up the lyrics to their song:

"Wanting Memories" -- You'll love them!!!

And if you can ever listen to a version of their song "Motherless Chil' "  Well...between those 3 songs, then I think you'll figure out why I am who I am.

This music drives me.  It makes life worth living for me.

Oh and did I tell you that I've wanted to go to Africa as part of Doctors Without Borders since I was about 14??  LOL  Maybe someday...although I've already been checking into travel nursing in Australia first...

Actually one more thought - they came to perform at Penn State during one of our Martin Luther King Jr festivities.  Now, the choir I was in (http://www.essenceofjoy.org) is of the African and African-American tradition.

We got to sing "We are one" and "Motherless Chil" with them on stage.

That was AMAZING!!! Smiley

You know, if it's meant to be, it'll happen... Smiley
Both Australia and Africa. Smiley

You know, it was my dad's big dream to visit Australia one day. He never got there, though... Sad
Mum once suggested that me and her should travel there in 2007 when it's been 10 years from his death.
I don't know if that happends...but it would be a nice tribute to him, we'd do that journey on his memory.

BTW, I'm gonna check those lyrics... Smiley

Aww I'm so sorry about your dad.   Cry  I was (no kidding) *just* talking to my dad on the phone about his car accident which almost killed him in 1997....weird like that.  Maybe you and I should get together!  I'll put Finland on my list of places to get to!

Soooo I used to have friends in Warilla, New South Wales, South Australia.  That's just outside of Sydney.

My friend Kirsty was a singer, and she actually got to sing in Sydney Opera House with a group when she was in school.

I've lost touch with her, and I don't know where she lives now.  I'd do anything to find her again!  I still have a box of all sorts of things she sent me and pictures of her, as well as a tape (we used to send each other tapes of our music and talking so the other person could check out our accents! hehe)

I mean this was years ago...but I still use words and spellings that I got in the habit of using when talking to her and other friends/family who lived overseas.

What would be awesome would to just be able to travel everywhere.  I guess technically I could if I join up with doctors without borders or something of that nature.

For the one travel nursing program in Australia, they pay you a fairly decent wage, but not as good as I can make here.  I'm not sure I'd care though - just being there would be something else!

OMG... that is weird! My dad died the year yours almost did...! My dad died in April, six months after he was diganosed with brain cancer. You know, he died April 18th. My uncle, who also had brain cancer, died on April 22nd 10 years before. They both were burried on the same weekend (well, 10 years apart, but anyway) and on the same cemetary, near each other....

life is full of weird things! A friends of mine calls them God's little jokes on us. I'm not sure about that. I do think that if any two people would talk long enough, they'd find things in common. Smiley

But anyway, you should come to Finland! Smiley If you ever get the chance, jump on it and come!!! I was brought up in the capital Helsinki and my mum and most of my pals still live there. My MA studies took me to Middle Finland, to Jyväskylä. I do visit home occasionally.

I bet visiting also Australia would be amazing! One of my best friends' wants to live and work there one day, too.  Smiley She's in media like I am, but she plans to get any job she can get. Smiley

And you're right, once you get there, it's the experience which really counts! Smiley

Ummm....even more in common.  5 people in my family died from brain CA.

Can we stop this???  LOL

So....on my dad's side, I'm like...English, Swedish...and that's about it.  Sweden is close to Finland!  If I go on a tour of my heritage, I'll stop at Finland, too.  Mine includes English, Swedish, Irish, French, German, Dutch, and Native American (blackfoot and sioux).

Fortunately for me, the mecca to the indian reservation isn't nearly as much of a challenge, since it's in northern montana.  I haven't been there yet, and my best friend and I started planning a trip out to the Blackfoot Rez right next to Glacier Nat'l Park when we were in junior high.  Of course, that was when we were into hiking the ENTIRE Appalachian trail in one summer.

And then our moms told us that we'd get murdered or something by all the stalkers on the Appalachian Trail, so we gave up on that idea.  Instead, we went skiing on lots of places around the trail - it had the same effect.  And our hiking trip to Hawk Mountain in Redding, PA also encompasses some of the trail I think.

I'm just like my mom's cousin (married to the dude in my family from Israel) because she was in the peace corps and then became a flight attendent because she wanted to see everything and take all kinds of adventures.

Lots of time left for that, right???!!?!  I hope Smiley

Yep, lots of time for adventures!

You know, one thing I bit envy about many american is their versatile roots. Mine is pretty much full of finns all around...   Grin
Families on both of the sides have done research but one must go far away before reaching any other nation. There's some German blood on my mum's side, if I recall correctly.

And we're pretty boring bunch what comes to finding partners, too. Only ONE person, my cousin from mum's side, married a woman who wasn't Finnish. She was from Africa. The union didn't work out out lots old relatives are still talking! Grin
When I studied in UK, my aunt suggested that I would import some exotic fellow with me... Wink You know, to spice up the blood! Grin

Anyways, I'm actually going to Sweden in the beginning of next month. I'm going on a cruise with my best friend. We have been on cruises together before and this time it's gonna be just the two of us. We'll spend a day -shopping- in Stockholm. Smiley It'll be fun...
I just hope that I could meet two of my best uni friends (from the time I studied back in UK) while I'm in Stockholm... they're both Swedish and live back in their home country now. Schedules are weird sometimes...

Btw, here in Finland we have this thing called skiing holiday! It lasts for a week, it's in February/March, depending on the area. That's a week during which school kids have time off. My parents used to take me skiing actually on the week to the Finnish Lapland. That was great! Cross-country skiing... I love that.

Peace corps there, peace corps here! My mum's brother went to UN peace corps when he was younger! Smiley

Hugs,
Sandie Smiley

This seems to fit too.

CREED

"One"

Affirmative may be justified
Take from one give to another
The goal is to be unified
Take my hand be my brother
The payment silenced the masses
Sanctified by oppression
Unity took a backseat
Sliding further in regression
One The only way is one
I feel angry I feel helpless
Want to change the world
I feel violent I feel alone
Don't try and change my mind
Society blind by color
Why hold down one to raise another
Discrimination now on both sides
Seeds of hate blossom further
The world is heading for mutiny
When all we want is unity
We may rise and fall, but in the end
We meet our fate together
One The only way is one
I feel angry I feel helpless
Want to change the world
I feel violent I feel alone
Don't try and change my mind
