Serious womens health issue..not ch
« on: May 17th, 2005, 10:35am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

These are personal events that have taken place in MY life this past week that are so IMPORTANT that I feel I just must share them with you.

On Saturday, May 7th, while trying to get my numbing hands comfortable in bed, I laid my hands across my chest and felt a large lump in my left breast.

On Monday, May 9th, I called my primary doc and he wanted to see me that same day, which he did.

On Wednesday, May l1th, I had a diagnostic mammogram which showed several masses, one being 7 cm long.

On  Friday, May 13th I saw a surgeon who told me that my condition was very suspect and she wanted to do a few biopsies.  These were scheduled for yesterday, Monday 16th.

They aspirated several nodules which flattened completely, meaning they were not anything to worry about.  There were 4 that did not completely flatten, so she did 4 biopsies.  I get (hopefully) the results tomorrow.

The point of this message is............

I skipped my mammo last year.  Why?  Just too damned busy.  Really?  To busy to save myself from the hot fear that I am going through right now?

Too busy to save my children from this same fear?

Why do we women put these things off?  "Oh, I'm scared of docs, or I'm scared they might find something"?  PLEASE!!  If they DON'T find that "something" early on, won't you be more scared to die?

Ladies, you OWE it to yourselves and your loved ones to have this done on a regular basis.  It is often free, or doesn't cost much at all.  As for time, it only takes about 20 minutes and if you can stand cluster pain, then this is a piece of cake.

My back surgery scheduled for tomorrow is on hold indefinately, of course.

Can I see a thread of "I DID IT{s}?

I need your prayers, but you know, I have a very positive feeling about this having a good outcome.

Love to you all,
DonnaH

Donna,

this is important issue you brought up.

I believe that today's news about singer Kylie Minogue's breast cancer will make women all around the world take it seriously.

I know I'm doing my check ups regularly. I'm 25, but cancer and cancer scares don't ask age!

I hope that all you have is just a scare. hug
((((((((vibes)))))))))
You're in my prayers. Let us know how things are doing, okay?

Best wishes,
Sandie

Found my first 2 lumps at 17

Had them removed, all was well.

Found the next one at 28

Ultrasound to see how big it was showed other "masses"
First Mamogram at 29 showed a total of three tumors.
Biopsied and all was well again.
Last year they became sore enough to warrant removal.
Last october I had 2 removed, 1 left.
May 11th (last week) had yet another mammogram. (#5) and i'm only 36.

I have a strong family history of breast cancer, so we were taught young how to check things out. Even taught my hubby how to recognize a lump. He tends to enjoy checking, (although I'm pretty sure he's not really paying attention to finding little lumps)

Don't be shy, and don't wait to "see if it grows". And if your mammogram hurts, they're not doing it right. Insist that they be careful and it will be over in no time.

And guys, don't think it can't happen to men. It's uncommon, and not talked about, but men get breast cancer too. If you feel something odd...check it out !

Donna H,

Thank you for bringing up this subject and sharing your own experience. It's only by getting the information out that others may be helped or saved.

Prayers and vibes to you hug

Donna, my friend, you know my prayers are with you.  My mother is a two-time breast cancer survivor, so I intimately understand your fear and your concern for the rest of us.  Yes, I'm a good girl and get checked regularily.  I stood with my mother through both of her surgeries and all the ensuing tests, rechecks and ongoing care.  Early detection is key to survival and we are blessed that my Mum is on the ball.
The other thing that is key to survival is attitude, Donna, and having known you for these last few years I see so many similarities between you and my Mum.  Regardless of biopsy results, you WILL rise above this and get done what needs to be done.
Stay strong, lady, and know that my shoulders are wide and waterproof if you ever need a place to lean.
Keep Him close. Wink

love,
Margi

OK, Missy Donna - now YOU put YOUR hand on the screen.  Back atcha, babycakes. Wink

Quit reading the depressing stuff.  Positive thinking is what will get you through this.

As I said, my mom's been through this twice, lumpectomy on one side, total radical on the other.  She refused meds/chemo/radiation both times AGAINST her doctor's orders.  She was just determined to beat it and she has.  First scare was 12 years ago, then again two years ago.  Totally cancer free now as a result.  Your mind is a very powerful tool - USE it.  The only thing she did do was follow the cancer diet given to her by the Cancer Centre here.

I'm not trying to scare you by using "the C-word", Donna - please know that.  I'm just trying to arm you with knowledge and the tools to make a plan if you need to.

My mum would be happy to email with you if you want to - she's helped a few folks get through this stuff.  You just let me know.  She's a tough lil lady and, like I said, you remind me very much of her.  She's 72 now and walks that little rat dog of hers about 5 miles a day.  It's all about 'tude, honey, and determination.  You got lotsa both.

Scares the shit outa ya I KNOW.....they found wierd stuff with me a year ago and is more or less nothin but scarring from 'horse wrecks' years ago....about tore my chest wall in half with one reck and torn into my shoulder across my chest. Man I sure screw'd myself up with horse races didn't I. I have to have it checked now every year 'just to be sure' it doesn't change. Recenlty my doc found a lump on my thyroid which FREAKED ME OUT BAD.....had the ultra sound and is nothing they said but will need regular checks. I also had damage to my throat and shoulder and collar bone from the same wreck....so not sure if that is the cause or not. Yeah checkups are good to have REGULAR cuz stuff is found quicker. Sooner is better Pam

Best of luck with your results !!!!!!!!!

Not a woman but Ruthie has had those all her life. Some were aspirated and some wouldn't and had to be cut out. This has happened 3-4 times. She now has little smiley face scars in 4-5 places. I call them battle scars. I think they are cute. Hang in there Donna. Chances are they are all fibroid masses.

My uncle died from breast cancer a couple of years ago. And he refused any treatment whatsoever, and it was extremely painful, and he suffered horribly. It tore up my aunt.

My grandmother has had both breasts removed within two years of each other. Her daughter refuses to get a mammogram, and she is 48 years old.

I had a scare several years ago, had a biopsy and it turned out to be nothing. If you think you can put it off, and you'll get it checked later, just remember this. Five minutes from now is later. Five days from now is later. Five months from now is later, but it may be too late.

Check yourself, and get a mammogram. A lot of insurance companies pay for this 100%. There are also programs that pay for this for a woman who can't afford it.

Don't wait.

Speaking of programs that pay for women that can't, Avon is one of them.  Their  representitives collected $45 million in net proceeds for the pink ribbon fund raiser.  They expected to collect $65 million more in their 60 mile walks in 2001.  I don't know what they've done since.

To apply for help there is:

Avon Breast Care Fund www.avonbreastcare.org

AvonCares Program at Cancer Care for
financial assistance and support services www.cancercare.org

and more.

I found this info when I had my echo Friday afternoon at the radiologists.

The American Cancer Assoc. also offers all kinds of help.

There is no good excuse for not getting a mammogram.
