Doc says a little weed will help curb boozing By Laura Crimaldi Tuesday, May 17, 2005 - Updated: 01:40 AM EST Some weed may prove to be the cure for the beer binge, new research reveals. But not the weed you think. Kudzu, a Chinese herb known as the ``scourge of the South,'' might be just the thing to curb compulsive brewski pounding, a McLean Hospital study has found. Known as a rampaging weed in the American South as well as for its anti-fever properties, kudzu was shown to cut binge drinking almost in half among 14 ``heavy drinkers'' who participated in the McLean study. ``It seems to reduce the desire for subsequent drinks and it doesn't have any side effects so, to me, it might have the possibility to treat adolescents and pregnant women,'' said Dr. Scott Lukas, who conducted the study. The study participants, all heavy drinkers in theirs 20s, were invited to an ``apartment'' laboratory at McLean Hospital stocked with their favorite beer, a television, reclining chair, DVD, CD, juice and water for four 90-minute stays. Lukas found that test participants who took kudzu drank 1.8beers per session, nearly half of the amount of alcohol consumed by those given a placebo. The study, published yesterday in ``Alcoholism Clinical and Experimental Research,'' also found that test participants who took the herb took smaller sips and didn't finish their beers as quickly, Lukas said.

That news doesn't surprise me. Back here there's a product called Kudzu Strong, which is sold to help those who want to quit drinking or smoking. This product contains 19,6% kudzu (they say that 1mg is same as 30g of dried kudzu) and you take 1 pill twice a day for 1-3 months.

I googled German language sites for kudzu. Most of them want to sell kudzu capsules as a stop smoking aid.
