This is a tough one. If I were the kid, I wouldn't have hung up either. Is the school heartless? I don't think so. Make one exception to the rule and suddenly teachers are having to verify dozens of phone calls a day to prove or disprove the call is from a relative in Iraq. If I were the kid, I would proudly take the punishment. The school could make exceptions as far as him not missing any work or putting the suspension on his "permanent record". Just my

I would have handled it in a more silent fashion as not to disrupt the student faculty. My protest of disgust will be in her e-mail too. Sean......................................

I don't think we have quite enough information to make an informed decision. We do not know how the teacher approached the student who was violating a school policy. I know from long personal experience from officiating 14 to 19 year old boys that they can be total asshats. Unfortunately, we lack specific details. That said, I have zero tolerance for zero tolerance policies in public schools. In order to be politically correct, the school adminstrators and teachers have ceased to think or to bring balance to anything. i.e., I am really dangerous with a butter knife or two aspirin in my backpack. Barring further details, I am going to go +1 for the student and -2 for the administration.

There used to be such a thing as common sense. This is a case where it looks as though it wasn't applied. People are too afraid to deviate from rules. What a shame. Humans would not exist without such deviation or exceptions. In this case, the teachers, etc, should have had the sense to wait. They could always tear into him after he finished. God I miss people who know when not to be afraid of using their heads. Charlie

There could be a lot more to the story here. Is this kid one of those obnoxious gangbanger types who walks around F'n this & F'n that ? Does he have a record of being unruly ? How does the teacher know he is REALLY talking to his mon in Iraq ? It could have been his girlfriend and he was just giving a smartass answer. Lots of questions here that are unanswered at this point. Nowadays, especially high school, it's tough to bend the rules as some people think should happen. One of the reasons schools are getting out of control as it is. I'm not saying if the kid was right or wrong, but more facts should be listened to before jumping the gun here IMO.

Why let kids have cell phones at school in the first place? They are always going to tell the teacher that they can't hang up because it is an important call - their cat is sick, their best friend is despondent and suicidal, their grandpa is dying for the third time. Sometimes they will be telling the truth. But calls to students at school should go through the office. The school has a policy that gives leeway for this type of call - and the kid didn't follow it. Instead he swears at the teacher, and he has a history of discipline problems. So he gets suspended. Does this come as a surprise to you?? Get a hair cut, you damn hippy.

The one big problem I had with the story was how the school was hiding behind a policy of "10 days suspension or call the police". WTF? Oh my god!!! A student is using a cell phone! Call the police! Whatever happened to the days when schools didn't depend on the police to handle the discipline for a minor infraction? What's next? "He was 5 minutes tardy from lunch, so we had him sent to juvy. Zero tolerance ya know." PFDAN................................ Drk^Angel

Schools calling police on unruly grade school children, and having them cuffed and sometimes arrested is an alarming new trend. It's happening everyday, all over the US. This is something we should be making a lot of noise about...sadly, most parent's won't...unless it's their kid.

Nani you're right... Most parents don't "get involved" in school matters and that's a crying shame. Why WOULD a kid NEED a cell phone in school? And NO I don't blame him for not hanging up if he was talking to his Mom in Iraq, but she could have called the school office just as easily and talked to him without all the fuss. But maybe that's too old fashioned. Until parents start taking some responsibility and getting involved in their children we're not going to see any changes. We're just going to get more rules and regulations handed down from the government and our kids are going to be politically correct even if they can't read and write. Hugs BD

NO, I wouldn't have hung up... But I feel that both sides probably handled it wrong... Had he followed the first rule, no phones @ school.. than the rest of the incident wouldn't have happened??? Peace & Blessings LL
