Has anyone ever home schooled their kids??
I am pondering - dont know where to start - or if I should even risk my child's education.......just to find out I cant do it.
Been to a lot of websites... they all seem religion based. I dont want religion based.
Anyway - if anyone has any knowledge on the subject.. could YOU enlighten me?? Thought I would ask the family... before I did something stupid.

When we moved to Atlanta Tx, my daughter was overly developed for her age. She was constantly harressed by some of the boys there. The teachers and principle would not do anything about it. So I pulled her out and home schooled her for half her 4th grade and all her 5th grade. We moved back home and she attended public school again. When she went back to public school she made all As. It is effort consumeing and you have to be commited. It differs from state to state as to what testing you have to do. It has its good and bad points.

There is something unsettling about it. Kids need to find out that the world is messy and not like mom & dad's world that they created for their kids. It's important that they not be sheltered from reality.
I'm not saying that you or everyone does this but a lot of them do it for religious or political ideas.
Not a good idea on that basis

That's not my motivation for doing it. It's Not religious, not political, not to avoid vaccinations, not to shelter my kid from reality. She's experienced enough "reality" in the past 6 months at that school than I she needs for a lifetime.. thank you very much.
At this point, I'm doing it for her own safety... because the school isn't doing shit.
And there's only ONE school here. There isn't another option, besides moving, or homeschooling.
And - like I said - I'm just pondering the idea. I dont know if I CAN. I dont know where to begin. I dont want a religion based program.

There are tons of resources out there, Tina. I haven't home schooled for high school, but I imagine there are more at that level. There are other ways for her to get her social needs met...even homeschool groups that do activities together. Google it for your area.
PM me if you'd like me to share some of my experience. I really enjoyed it.

A friend of ours has been home schooling her 14-year old daughter due to health issues. She tells me that like anything else it has up side and down side. Teenagers are at a crucial developmental cross roads and seem to NEED eachother. Peers are so important to them. I can't tell ya what to do but wanted to lend support!
As far as the "political" comments here is what i've seen both as an outside observer and as a parent of two teenagers myself: Public Schools still offer a good education - HOWEVER - our social structure has undergone such huge changes insofar as "physical development" (kids are WAY more physically developed today) as well as the "information highway" which has become a runaway train! Public schools are an "institution" and are reluctant to put their foot in a pile of dogshit and get sued.....so the dilemna falls almost entirely on the family structure - most of which both parents are working long hours and not at home!
Kids are privy to so much information via computer, cell phones, television, etc. Neither the school nor the family is currently equipped to handle it. I think that parents and schools need to get on the same page in order to be able to deal effectively with the challenges of today and so far, i see the public schools slinking around hoping they'll slide by. Parents today have challenges that are new to us, and so far not much support.
Religion has nothing to do with it! I think the schools are sticking their heads up their ass and letting the family shoulder the burden. Meanwhile, kids at school are becoming almost "free agents". It's scary.
Anyhow, Tina, from one MOM to another - HANG IN THERE and best luck in whatever direction ya decide to take

We home-schooled my daughter for about 2 years due to health issues.
First thing you should do is contact the School & set up a meeting with the appropriate school personell, i.e... Principal, Guidance Couselors, teachers, so on. Explain to them the reasons you believe home-schooling would be beneficial. (Probably not a bad idea to get some help on your side in the way of an attorney who specializes in these type of issues.) The attorney should accompany you to this and future meetings. It's not too expensive for the attorney, especially if you do most of the paperwork yourself.
If they agree, the school will send over a teacher to help with the home-schooling. Ours was 3 days a week for about two hours. Having that 3rd. party teacher was very beneficial because it gave us a second opinion on what the child needs in terms of study materials, as well as the best course of action.
Laws may differ in other states but the child still has rights to attend all school functions i.e. assemblies, pep rallies, proms, dances and all after school functions.
Hope this helps some. It's been such a long time since we went through this...but it was very important for us to have the attorney. She really helped us with the schools questions & demands.

If the school is not protecting your daughter...then they are in the wrong....Have you thought of calling in your local TV station & telling them your (her) story? I KNOW thats how a parent here FINALLY got action & got her daughters needs addressed & met. The school will just a bout turn cartwheels rather than have bad publicity....Best of Luck

Hi Tina,
I been researching Homeschooling for three years now. We are homeschooling JD. If I had it all to do over again I would have home schooled my children. I know I can not spell. JD s 4 and already spelling words.
Tina there are on line schools for the teens. They cost a pertty penny but from what I know about them they are good and you can pay in payments. I belong to some groups I will email you some links. Matter of fact I am taking a six week homeschooling course free just have to buy two books. Not all home schools are religish based. go get this book.
The home schooling Book of answers and The first year of homeschooling your child both by Linda Dobson.
Call me if you want to talk ! I will tell you what I can about what I know.
The main thing is to keep your daughter in some kind of outside activitys. She needs to be with other kids!

I have several friends that homeschool their kids and love it. They go to state convention for home schoolers and network with other homeschooled kids to do field trips with. There kids are very well ajusted. I would go for it if you have it in you. Abeca is a good curriculum and yoiu can just leave the relegious part out.

And why is that? Religious and political education is a BAD thing? Or is it just that political and religious education from family is bad, whereas political and religious indoctrination in public school is acceptable?

Woobie, I wish you the best of luck Sweetie... I've never done it myself, but I personally know several people that have.. The indiviual groups here (Champaign, IL) get together for outings and and other events...

I know a few cases where this was harmful for the child's education, IMO. The Bible is not the only source for History and Literature. It can (and should be if it's important to the family) part of the cirriculum, but it shouldn't be the only resource. Education should be geared towards giving children some facts and teaching them how to think. Not what to think. Spiritual and religious education is different.

We may see some things differently Hirv but in this case I have to agree! I like to call it dumbing down but it is still the same thing. It is alot easier to dumb down than to bring the slower children up. I always thought that this way of thinking was back assward.

Home Schooling offers an alternative to kids and families who for VARYING reasons are having difficulties achieving optimum educational experience.

It could be a good idea, but..... depends on the kid's attitute and such. That'd be a lot of stress on ya if she doesn't want to participate in home schooling. You may want to check with the school principle on alternative programs.
My son had problems at school and was about to just give up. We managed to get him enrolled in an alternative school that was affiliated with his school at no cost to us. They put aside funds for select candidates that are borderline. His grades improved dramatically and he actually enjoyed it. Ended up graduating with his original classmates and all worked out without the hassles.
Just a thought.

When I was a kid, the best schools in my town were the Catholic schools. Lots of people sent their tykes there no matter what their religious bent. I don't have knowledge of them today. They are probably very good so long as they aren't full of politics.
I don't know the tuition.
