I know some of you are not old enough to remember, but,
Remember this?
The following were some comments made in the year 1957:
(1) "I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, its going to be impossible to buy a weeks groceries for $20.00."
(2) "Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long when $5,000 will only buy a used one."
(3) "If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous."
(4) "Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?"
(5) "If they raise the minimum wage to $1, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store."
(6) "When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage,"
(7) "Kids today are impossible. Those ducktail hair cuts make it impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know, boys will be wearing their hair as long as the girls,"
( "I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying 'damn' in 'Gone With The Wind,' it seems every new movie has either 'hell' or 'damn' in it."
(9) "I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas."
(10) "Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday that they will be making more than the President."
(11) "I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now"
(12) "It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet."
(13) "It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work."
(15) "I'm just afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business."
(16) "Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when t he Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to Congress."
(17) "The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on."
(1 "I guess taking a vacation is out of the question now days. It costs nearly $15.00 a night to stay in a hotel."
(19) "No one can afford to be sick any more, $35.00 a day in the hospital is too rich for my blood."

As much as I hate to say it......yes, I remember 1957!
I was 10 years old.
In 1963, I drove a '57 Chevy to school. Those '57 Chevy's were the rage in Texas.
Gas was cheap! A good gas war and you could buy gas for 13 cents a gallon. Man, those were the good ole days!
Princess Drive-In.....the best hamburgers in town!
Wow....thanks for bringing back some good memories!

Hey Jean, I was also 10 in '57. In high school I drove a '47 Ford. I put a '62 Chevy V8 in it and broke the transmission the first time I punched it.
P.S. Please don't tell Linda H it had a Chevy motor.

Ah yes. I remember it well. It was snowing like hell in Seattle on January 30th 1957 as my dad always reminds me, when the doctor slapped me on the ass.

Actually, the tax rates on the rich were more than 75%, probably more.
Nice though. I love to read stuff that took place when I was still wearing my Davey Crockett t-shirt.

Thanks for the memories -- and I was a little more than 10. That was a special year for all us - kids!
We could also leave the doors unlocked -- no one knew where the key was anyhow.
Kids could "walk" to town without fear of being "taken" - everyone in town watched out for everyone's kids.
Roy Rogers and Dale Evans were still at the movies.
Buck Rogers was "fiction" (imagine going off into space -- and those "machines" (computers) he had on that ship of his.......
Duck tails and poodle skirts
And that singer who shook his pelvis - Elvis!
And that 57 Chevy..... $1.00 of gas would run us all night -- about 6 of us could come up with a dollar on Friday night - most of the time.
Geezzz - our kids and grandkids are missing so much......

I was picked up for carrying a loaded diaper. Probably also rolling around the back seat of a new blue and white two-toned '57 Ford Fairlane. Looked forward to inheriting the cool hand-me-down tricycle, someday climbing through the milk shute, trying not to fall down on the new concrete driveway, wishing the wooden high chair wasn't sticky, and hoping to NEVER lose my blue blankie.

Well, hell's bells, Bob,  I too was young in the 50's but much of this list is memorable. In 1957, I fondly remember being given goiter pills once a week during milk break in grade school (before iodized salt). Even in the 60's, my first new car (a '69 Pontiac LeMans convertable) was just under $4000-the same amout that my four years of college cost!)  Yes, inflation is as certain as death and taxes

I don't remember it, I was only an infant.
I do remember gas at $.39 a gallon in 1972 at the first pump it yourself station in town. I remember saying "When cigarettes hit $1.00 a pack I'm quitting." I also remember my first fulltime job in 1975...I got paid minimum wage...$2.41 an hour.

a few years before I landed on earth, Bob, but I do remember getting my first apartment in the late 70's at age 17. I was grossing $600 a month from my job and my rent was $300 for a really big 2 bedroom apartment. I paid $50 a month to board my horse, my car payment was $75 a month (to my grandmother), $20 gas would keep that old Envoy Epic  going for about a week and a half and I lived on mac/cheese and weiner water soup (sorry, Broomie - there's your favourite word  ). I had WAY more spending money in those days than now! I even saved up enough money to buy a used Gremlin!! Now THAT was a cool car. LOL

My father took home nearly $10,000 in 1957. Have you any idea how much that was back then? He paid off everything but he wouldn't buy a new car for mom. (he had epilepsy too) We got our 57 Olds in 1959.
Russians beat us to space
The embarrasing Suez crisis was over. Anthony Eden resigned as Prime Minister.
The Mayor's kid stole our big Hein-Warner jack. Cops were nervous about telling him.
Dad sold our camp. Mom hated it.
We still had a milkman and "cream top" bottles.
The Brooklyn Dodgers played their last game.
McDonalds burgers were about 20 cents.
You could still buy a Studebaker, Packard, and the Edsel was new.
Charlie was 11 and "I Love Lucy" Ended.
Charlie still loved 1957.

You are SO much older than I am!!!! I was only seven, in '57.
I remember most of what has been mentioned, above. I remember, when my youngest sister was born, in '56, the milk man started to deliver some extra milk bottles, without the cream on top. I don't remember them caling it skim milk, though, just "milk without the cream on top" ... Then they finally went to that new fangled stuff, "homogenized" ... Didn't have the cream on top anymore!
I also remember Ike's re-election campaign. I had an "I Like Ike" button.
Ah the good ole days ... Days BEFORE the beast!!!!

My father smoked Camels. 21 cents a pack. The pack had 4 pennies under the cellophane as change for a quarter. My brother and I would fight over who got the 4 cents for candy.
