Page 2 National Affliction: Headaches TRONDHEIM (VG) 38 % - or about 1.7 million Norwegians - reports that they have experienced painful headaches within the last year. Headaches have not been seriously considered as a decease the last couple of years, said Researcher Erling Tronvik. The following are the most common forms of headaches: Medication Headaches Number of cases: 4,000 - 5,000 Norwegians suffer from this kind of headache on a daily basis. Characteristics: Feels like a lid is pressed against your head. The patient suffers daily. Reasons/Treatment:Overuse of pain medications are mostly blamed - often pain medications used to control another kind of headache. Sort of rebound headache. Patients may, in some cases, need in-hospital detoxification treatment. Cluster Headaches: Number of cases: 3,000 - 5,000 Norwegians are believed to suffer from CH. Men are more likely in a 5 - 1 ratio to suffer from CH. Characteristics, Reasons/Treatment: Extreme pain.(Not sure as to meaning of: "Se egen sak" - This translates to "See own thing" ?? Migraine: Number of cases: An estimated 550,000 patients in Norweig. Women outnumbers men 2 - 1. Characteristics: Half-sided, pulsating headache, often in combination with "kvalme" (Don't know this word) and vomiting. Stronger than Tension Headaches. Kan shift from side to side as is not the case with Cluster Headaches. Many patients are sensitive to light and sound. Reasons/Treatment: Most likely a nervous system error. Partly heritage based. Both preventative and pain medication will help when the Migraine hits. Tension Headaches: Number of cases: 1.2 million Norwegians suffer from Tension Headaches. Most of them are Women. Characteristics: An even preassure, like a band across the forehead or the back of the head. Mostly mild to moderate pain level. Reasons/Treatment: Stress factors may trigger the headache. Relaxation and minor pain medication can help. Only a minority see a doctor for this kind of headache. Page 3 Terrible Pain TRONDHEIM (VG) Coincidence led to a blood preassure medication to be used as a preventative for migraine. Now a study to see if this blood preassure medication also will relieve the pain caused by the so called suicide headache. The medicin that today is used for Cluster Headaches, is not as effective or has serious side-effects, said Erling Tronvik. Attempts to operate on a nerve in the face on some patientshave worked on some, on others it caused numbness in the facial muscles and with some there was no improvement. - We do not know the reasons for Cluster Headaches. What we do know is that they ahve something to do with the part of the nervous system that we can not control, said Erling Tronvik That part of the nerous system, for instance, control our blood preassure and that it is raised when we get stressed etc. Marty

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.
