Here in Boston Staples is marketing a new item. The "Gimme Sign". They all say the same thing. Sober Homeless Disabled War Veteran Please Help. I've seen 20 year old war veterans out there wearing "Phish" t-shirts. Except one guy. An older guy. His sign simply said "Smiles and Greetings, Donation Appreciated". I gave him $5.00 bucks.

Every morning down by our local WallyWorld there is the same guy in the same spot with a sign asking for donations "Veteran, homeless, please help, God Bless" (around here all the beggers ask God to bless you). Every afternoon, in the same spot, there is different guy. He's always holding the morning guy's sign. It looks like a father-son team.

When they try to panhandle me, they usually give the line about needing food. I offer to take them for some lunch. You wouldn't believe how picky panhandlers can be. I have only had a few take me up on the offer of food. When they do, they get anything on the menu at McDonalds or Burger King. Not gourmet food but a decent meal.

We had a guy stabbed by a panhandler when he said he had no money. I think we have that law now, too. There are career panhandlers...probably a good living if you don't mind working outside and dressing up your dog. Me...I always buy them food, never give them cash.

| You know, I would have done the same thing, Don. I offer to buy panhandlers food, and usually get turned down, but I have gone out and had a hamburger with some of those guys, and the ones whose brains aren't mush from booze, drugs, or untreated schizophrenia, are usually quite intelligent and articulate. Interesting characters... I was in Staples parking lot, last summer, and a woman came up and asked me for money so she could get the tire fixed on her car. I asked her what was wrong with it and she said it was flat, so I reached behind the seat and handed her my can of "Fix-A-Flat." She took it and walked off. I felt pretty good about helping a fellow human being. About two months later, the same lady came up to me and asked me for money so she could fix her tire. I pulled out a new can of "Fix-A-Flat," and then she recognized me. She started swearing and stomped off in a huff. LOL

I offered a guy an application for "Mass Rehab" a state funded organization that trains or retrains you to become employed and further offered my time to help him fill it out. I thought he was going to break my windshield.

There's sum lady that sits out by Walmart with a big sign saying she will work for food and that she is a veteran......she sits out there in all kinds of weather esp thru the winter. Thing is there are help wanted signs all over the mall plaza for people to stock shelves or clean up.....I think panhandeling is a choice of jobs for sum people. They don't work at all but hit the streets to get what they can and get food WHATEVER then home till there stomach growls again or they run low on booze or crack. I never trust ANY of them. And havein em chase ya when ya say no in Cleveland would make me trust em less. Gimmie somethin free choice Pam

I used to work at 2 very large Homeless shelters here in Boston. Boston Public Health, Homeless Services. Guys would come in at night and all the canes, crutches, and dark glasses were tossed aside till morning and they sat on the bunks counting up the days take. Caught the blind guy reading the sports section one night. Yankee igenuity baby......... ingenuity.

Panhandlers avoid me like I had the plague. I can go to Wallys and part the waves of folks like the Red Sea. My kid told me her friends think I'm the scariest person they ever saw. Hell my kid says I'm the scariest person she has ever seen. Now that I'm unemployed and unemployable I think I will get a sign, that says How bout a hand up.LMAO. I don't look scary to me.

Well, I don't think you're a bit scary, man. But I'll bet you ARE scary to those who are trying to suck the welfare tit, pretending to be combat vets. And in that case, GOOD!

Lots of people try to pretend you and others don't exist. The wakeup scares them. On the original topic: My grandfather, who ran our parts store, during the depression, used to hand out meal tickets to the best lunch counter in town. It sorted things out. There was a guy in town who was genuinely in need a lot of help for more than one reason. Somehow he lost his voice as well and the locals had some business cards printed for him to use. It worked. Everybody tried to help him. I wonder what became of him? He was gone when I returned home so many years ago. I'd like to think he got in on some kind of state aid. Charlie
