high fat, low cholesterol foods????

Hi all, got a question for you. Background**** I'm having a hard time with food. I have a disease that causes me get up pretty late and I don't like to eat right away. Around 2 or 3, I'll fix a great big meal and eat. I'll snack again in a few hours, at like 4 or 5. But if I eat too late, like past 7 or so, I can't fall asleep. The result is I'm always hungry, and have a hard time eating enough. The food that I do eat tends to stay in my stomach for a long while, because I'm not able to do anything. But I still want to eat more, at least more concentrated nutrition, and calories, ie fat. Does anyone know of a high fat, low cholesterol food(s)? I don't like to live on meat, I generally eat it a couple times a week. I already eat a lot of butter, so I want to stay away from cholesterol heavy foods. I can think of peanut butter, but you can only eat so many pb&j's, believe me! Avocados are another obvious one, but pretty expensive to eat every day. Ice cream is one, too, but I'm talking something you could eat every day, and ice cream doesn't really float my boat for being a staple food. I'm not scared of weird idea's, I'm considering drinking like a half cup of olive oil every day, just wondering about how that would sit... Can anyone think of foods that would help me put some meat on my bones? ;] Thanks a lot, bean PS- Or just info in general. Ideas of websites, forums to go to, etc. thanks!

Don't pay any attention to them, Bean. Visit your local GNC and explain the problem. Chances are they have ingredients for a "magic high-fat milkshake" drink or something similar. You could also try something like Ensure - total meal in a can. Drink enough of them between meals and it might help. Good Luck! Kris

| Kris, I couldn't play the guy any straighter, check out your tax dollars at work for you. It's about eating actual food though, the markup on Ensure makes it too advisable at GNC. Kevin M

I crave chips and carb stuff at nite so bad it is terrible........luckily I have 'sum' control over it cuz I could eat entire pizzas and bags of chips, crackers and cheetos till I exploded......could eat and eat and not feel full tho which is a problem. My kid had a problem when she was little like that. Seems if you avoid that stuff after a few days your craveings will stop. OK........what was your question again ? I think I am way off track......imagine that ! Peanut butter and pickles ROCKS Pam

Its true that fat has more calories per gram, but if you want to gain weight, you need carbs. Carbs trigger insulin production, and insulin is a hormone that leads to storage of food in the fat cells. If you are on a high fat diet, you will have more ketones in the blood, which can turn off hunger. Few people binge on fats - when was the last time you saw some one eat a stick of butter?? On the other hand, people will bing on chips, pretzels, bread, etc. and then they put on weight.

| Phew!...no one saw me. Seriously bean, you don't want to be eating a lot of meat either. Meat takes a great deal of time to fully digest. There are other, more easily digestable proteins out there...beans, soybeans, nuts. Fruit digests very quickly, how about fruit for snacks? And flo is right...it takes carbs to put on weight.

What's with carb craveings tho.......why would a person start cravein that stuff like chips and all at a certain time every nite ? It drives me nuts......but I do stop drinking pop at a certain time cuz of the caffine and me bein an insomniac and all....dunno if that has sumthin to do with it or what cuz it's not that bad earlier in the day. I do ok with watchin the diet all day then evening comes along....yeah carbs will put on the weight. My sister in law had jaw surgery and lived on that Ensure for months !!! Man did she ever get thin.....she looked good tho cuz she was always a tad overweight. But all it did was SUSTAINE life for her. There are carb snack bars that are good......the best one I found is called ZONE at Walmart in the diet section I think and comes in boxes. I get em to take campin and stuff cuz if ya get really hungry but can't eat yet or no time to eat they will keep ya goin with what you need. Very tastey !!! This carbs for you Pam Ever notice how many calories and fat calories are in some of the salad dressings ?? I bout shit cuz I like to stick with alot of veggies and salad stuff and fruits. Sum have 135 calories per serveing (110 fat calories) of 2 tablespoons !!!!! Holy crap......I used a couple cups !!! Not anymore !!!!

| Check out the incredible salt content in some too. Most can surpass half a day's advisable intake in one salad. Kevin M

Try peanuts, not peanut butter. Peanuts are full of fat but they also have the "right kind" of cholesterol. I snack on them all the time. In fact I have some in front of me as I type. Peanuts are my thing. Charlie

I heard also bananas contain alot of sugar tho.....so not sure bout that one. Seems what ya think is good for ya and less fat and carbs or whatever is the worse for one reason or the other. Don't think alot of sugar aids sleeping. Hell a can of soup has so much sodium it will shock you and that is only a half of the can since each can is two serveings. Some cann'd stuf will have 750 mgs per servering of sodium.....that's times two for the entire can !!!! Explains the retaining water session after eating soup for lunch doesnt it ? Can'd spaghetti and stuff is jus at bad. Heck even applesause is LOADED with calories. I was doin yogurt fer a while and noticed how many calories was in that stuff......unless your satisfied to jus have a few spoons of it your screw'd there too. Those new flavore'd rice cakes are kinda good if ya have the need to munch alot.....but me thinks there mite be a bit of a clogging factor for sum. Me and my milk of magnesia Pam

Banana's at night will make you sleep.. I got told that one too by my doctor when I went to see him with insomnia! Also full of potassium so very good for you! Oh and Cootie.. your body gets into habits which is why you crave things at the same sort of times each day.. like my hubby waking up gasping for a cup of tea! Bean I'm sorry, you have it tough. Where most people want to lose weight not put it on I bet you get loads of "Wow you are lucky's" which isn't so helpful! Try jacket potatoes with cheese and beans thats good but what I really think is that you need to see a nutritionist. We can all tell you our favourite "fat" foods until we are blue in the face but without really knowing about your illness we aren't your best option. Also.. you need to be aware of other factors such as cholesterol and heart disease etc so you really need someone to help you work out a balanced diet for you to help you gain weight without a coronary! Let us know how you are getting on though eh?!

Gain weight? Just eat your regular 5 meals a day at MacDonalds. When you get to be a a big fat slobbery lazy pig with the smell of rancid oil on your breath you can Sue the bastards! That's what I'm going to do as soon as I get back up to 290 pounds. Only20poundstogoBob.

Bean, have you seen a dietician or a nutritionist? Just curious. You could always go for those weight gainer mixes at GNC. on Apr 6th, 2005, 12:49am, sandie99 wrote:I read once that if one wants a good night sleep, one should eat bananas in the evening. |
| My wife has always been convinced that bananas before bedtime will undoubtedly give you nightmares. That's why I don't eat them before bed...I wouldn't want to see THIS in my sleep. Casey

| I found it, I think... palm kernal oil. It comes in tubs in natural food stores as "non-hydrogenated vegetable shortening", in other words, natural crisco. It's naturally saturated, kind of like coconut oil, except even more so. Coconut oil turns to liquid at slightly over warm room temp., this stuff stays solid, like butter. Chip and cookie companies are starting to use it (again) after ditching it for hydrogenated veg. oil to fry and bake their foods with, because people are starting to complain about the hydrogenated oils being bad for health. Thanks for the help, though. I would really like to be able to eat hemp seeds... they are like the perfect food... tasty, full of fat, protein, etc. I can't wait until hemp becomes legal in the U.S. Pretty much what I was looking for was meals/foods that you could just load up with oil... just drop a spoonful of palm oil on whatever you're eating and chow. This will decrease my utter dependancy on butter... And thanks for the help, everyone...
