For my single sisters to ponder...

Waxing philosophical again...not sure why this came into my head.

Call me crazy (which often times I am) but I had an epiffany, an analogy if you will about the choices we women make in the endless search for Mr. Right... this is of course based on my own experiences and the experiences of my friends and aquaintences...oh and guys, you may even like this....

It was a perfect kind of restaurant to have dinner in... large picturesque windows that over looked the ocean, spot lighting, gorgeous renessance paintings adorning the walls and lush scarlet colored carpet and brilliantly shining polished marble floors covering the floor.  The most interesting thing about this restaurant is that it isn't food on the menu, but men.

Every night women would walk in, be seated at the table by the hostess and pick up the menu once again to order what they believed to be Mr. Right.  There was never a "daily special", and the servers were never permitted to give suggestions as to what to order, but they could tell you what was their most popular dish..... Tall, Dark, and Handsome, served straight up.

It was a funny sight to behold at times.  Scores of women all sitting alone at small, candle lit tables, drapped in expensive white linen table cloths, trying to decide what they should have.  The strange thing about Tall, Dark, and Handsome was that you were never told what came with it...a side of jealous ex-girlfriend? An inability to commit?  Large ego?  Well those were the side dishes that were never really desired.  It was a somewhat rare chance to recieve Tall, Dark and Handsome (and I mean, hubba hubba) with a side of wanting to settle down with a woman beautiful on the inside and therefore beautiful on the outside.  Oh, they existed, don't get me wrong and when a woman would finally be so lucky as to get one for her order, she danced around like she won the lottery... unfortunately this would only further encourage the other women sitting at the tables to anxiously grab their servers by the shirt and demand "I WANT WHAT SHE'S HAVING!!!"  But as always the server would reply,(in a French accent) "I'm sorry Madame... but we cannot promise how your order will come out."

Its unfortunate that this reactionwould be so typical amongst the female customers that would walk through the swirling revolving doors.  But then there was the quiet woman.  She silently would sit down at her table, not making a fuss, pick the menu carefully and almost whispering, say to her server (as if she were revealing a secret) that she would be ordering short, geeky and funny.... or sometimes it was tall, preppy, and quirky (with a side of glasses and a goofy smile) or bald, heavy and easy going with a side of loving kids like were his own.  Often times the women who ordered these men were not doing it because they knew they would find happiness... most often it was because they were tired of ordering the same damn thing off the menu and expecting to recieve the man with the qualities they truly wanted.  These were the women who had courage to look beyond the external package and realize that certain qualities are better found elsewhere and that maybe they were passing up on something really amazing and delicious simply because on the outside it was not something they would usually order.. aka:  Not They're Type.

It wasn't that just because these women would actually venture away from Tall, Dark, and Handsome that they immediately would find Mr. Right because he was bald, or quirky... sometimes they too would become one of the many dishes ordered that simply did not turn out the way a woman wanted.  And this restaurant NEVER guaronteed how any dish would turn out.

But if a woman was to secretly go to the kitchen of the restaurant and actually sneak a peak at what was going on.... you'd see that many times the kitchen ran out of Tall, Dark, and Handsome quite frequently.. (it was the most popular dish afterall) and there lined up along the counter would be the other dishes that women never bothered to order because they were different, unconventional, and not what most women wanted as to appearance on the outside.  It's not that there was a lot of these types of men, in fact, they were the rarest of all.  The chef would refer to them as the oysters that came with a pearl.  The Tall, Dark, and Handsome was actully a dime a dozen in a lot of cases.... but the demand was so huge, that's why they would run short.  The interesting thing is that is was usually Tall, Drak, and Handsome that would get sent back to the kitchen eventually as the woman would discover he was not all hewas cracked up to be.... but the other men would rarely find themselves back in the kitchen once a woman placed them on her order.

These women who took the chance to order something different off the menu were the ones who walked out with a secret smile on their lips.... why?  Because they understood the secret and not too many women realized... that short, preppy geeky, quirky... whatever she ordered, in time (as she began to indulge in her special order) would in her eyes become the man she had wanted from the start.  He would become her Tall, Dark and Handsome... not because that's what he was on the outside, but because of who he was on the inside.

So Ladies, what will you be ordering off the "Man Menu?"

Great post, and very wise.  Thanks.  The side orders are often the most enticing things anyway.  For me, a great sense of humor is right at the top.

EEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hehe that does look like chuck. Shocked

Thanks Redd. That was great.  Yep dated a lot of Tall Dark and Handsomes in my life.  Still friends with a few, some of them turned out to be gay now.  Roll Eyes

Anyway hubby is not your typical tall dark and handsom. Hell I am only 1 inch shorter then him. He is italian so dark works I guess. And most people say they that he looks like a bouncer or hitman off the Serpranos. (spelled that wrong) So I am not sure that handsome even fits.  But they way he looks at me makes my heart melt.   So it does not matter what anyone else thinks. (Besides he has great eyes and a great butt  Grin)

Great post Pegg. Women can really delude themselves about what they want, can't they? About 18 years ago, I ordered tall, kind and sensitive. I've never even considered sending him back. He not only helped raise my kids, but is lovingly raising our (my) grandkids and putting up with my demented parents, too. He's my best friend, my biggest supporter (in everything) and he's great in b...never mind.  Wink
Most definitely a keeper.  Smiley  Here he is with mooshie:

I always thought I wanted tall and dark, but I ended up with tall and blond (well, kind of grey now).  I fell in love with his sensitivity (he's the gayest straight man I've ever known) and his sense of humor.  After 29 years of marriage, he can still make me laugh.

Great post, Redd.  Thanks for sharing.
