We were thinking about taking a cruise in the summer/fall. Anyone have any recommendations? Pro's, Con's to taking a cruise? Good Cruise line/crappy cruise line? Thanks B

You can get a nice 7 day cruise to Bermuda right out of the Black Falcon terminal in Boston. I took a 4 day Bahama cruise out of Lauderdale on Carnival. Economical and it was a blast.

Bermuda's NICE!! I've never had a nicer vacation. I second Don's recommendation. Talk to Cathy04, too! She's a cruise veteran.

We’ve taken a 4 dayer on Carnival to the Bahamas. Great service. Carnival is a party cruise line. We Used Costa cruise line for 7 days to the western Caribbean. Costa is Italian registered. Very nice ship but everything is in Italian translated to German translated to French translated to Spanish and then translated to English. It sucked. But, the islands are beautiful. Hire a cab for the day, not one of those 12 passenger vans. We used Norwegian lines to do a 7 day cruise through the inside passage (going north) to Alaska and outside passage returning. Very nice ship but poorly laid out. Service was just so-so. Alaska was our favorite cruise. Since you’re young I say use Carnival. Have fun, cruising is GREAT.

We normally take 2 cruises/year, on Celebrity or Royal Carrib. Typically we take cruises out of Baltimore/NY, as it eliminates the 2 days travel (and expense) down/back from the south. That gives the added benefit of adding 3 days to the cruise. For the last 2 years we have only taken 10 day cruises. For 7 day cruises you feel like you just unpacked. With 10 day you are actually ready to go home around night 9. Cruises rock. Our daughter is planning a hunger strike since we are skipping the 2005 cruises due to the move. As far as cruise lines, any major line will make you happy. I love Celebrity and Royal Carrib. I know others who swear by Costa, Norwegian, Princess, Carnival, et al. Just go on one... any one. Boat choice might be considered important. We LOVE the Voyager class boats (130k tons). The Celebrity Galaxy (our normal Baltimore boat) is only 85k tons... it is cool and such, but does not compare to the Voyager class ships. So for a firsttimer I might suggest leaning toward a lines mega-ships. I know that Carnival, Princess and Royal Carrib have such... and Celebrity has some near that (100k tons). As a side note, the Titanic was just 46k tons.

Cruises can be a great way to see new places but beware the herd mentality. Food 24/7 and free so beware. Cruise lines makes big bucks on selling side trips and tours. They also get paid for recomending shops restaurants etc. so their recomendations are not always the best. Get out on your own and experience the local culture and food where ever it is. You can arrange day trips, excursions etc. on your own directly with the company that offers it. You will always be treated better as an individual than as a group. If you end up cruising the Caribbean. Always remember to say good morning or good afternoon before starting a conversation, even if you only want directions or help. You will be surprised at how freindly people will become. If you get to St. Maarten let me know. Quote:I reccomend you fly straight to Grand Cayman. | Tom, Maybe little Cayman or Cayman brac for now. Grand Cayman got whacked real bad by Hurricane Ivan and is still recovering.

Underpack and plan to pay for laundry service if you are going on a longer cruise (7 or 10 days). It costs about the same or slightly more than a drycleaner. Far better than trying to luck along a weeks worth of clothes... assuming you will be changing... a lot. At the end you are to tip 4-5 different people (ie cabin steward, waiter, asst waiter, maitre'd...). Assume that will run a few hundred.

| Tortola: mushrooms are legal and take a trip to Virgin Gorda. Spend the day at the "baths" its an amazing area of huge boulders on the water. San Juan: El Yunque rain forest or "old San Juan" Both are tourist traps but worth it once your on your own. St. Maarten: call me and you don't have to worry about a ting.

| AB-SO-LUTELY ! Like sitting in a natural Jacuzzi. While your at it stop by the "Soggy Dollar Bar". You have to jump off the boat and swim to it. Hence the name.

| True. I forgot. We are by passing Grand Cayman this year to spend more time on the Outer Banks of NC. The only 'cruise ship' I've ever been on was courtesy of the U.S. Coast Guard. Thank you Uncle Sam, I learned a lot. TomM

I know how you can save lots of money. Hop in your car and take a cruise to Dallas in July. They've got all the entertainment you can handle.
