Some one pointed out to me last night that I get Migraines. My standard response: "I dont get Migraines I get Clusters" Whats the differance they ask. "Telling me I have Migraines is like telling a Leper they only have a rash" Seemed to work. I got them thinking anyway.

What I have been finding with "non-headache" people, is that they use the word migraine quite indiscriminately....as a generic term for any pain in the head. I'm convinced that even with printouts, etc., there is just no way to really convey what it feels like. So true empathy is probably impossible. Although, it wouldn't hurt if they witnessed us writhing around.

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

And people with migraine feel that way when others on the outside say, "Oh....I get migraines too...I completely understand" when you watch them pop 2 excedrin and they are fine. It's just...it's hard to understand when you don't live it. I have chronic migraine and CH...I don't want either confused with the other one, and if I had a choice between the two...I'd rather jump out my window than suffer either one frankly. I'd never PICK consciously, one over the other....they both have ruined my life...if I were to look at it negatively. However...instead for me, there's definitely a difference, but I don't mix them in my life...except for the fact that they both cause me pain in the head and they both have other symptoms unique to each disease. One nurse who used to work at the headache center told me, "I wouldn't wish anyone of this crap on anyone, but if I had to pick someone, I'm glad it's you. You'll use it for the greater good." That's what I've tried to do. My honors project is entitled "More Than Just a Headache: Improving migraine and headache education for future nurses." It covers the entire gamut. I sure as hell hope that nobody has any "confusion" over the differences by the time I'm done!!! On lots of my post surveys, people were very interested in the info on clusters because they never really knew what it was. Either way....hopefully "headaches" as a whole will be wiped off the map as a problem someday... Just keep hoping. Lizzie

Sitting at my desk the other day, getting hit with about a K6, my co workers (all of whom KNOW I have CH, have read the literature and have seen me get hit before) kept coming up to me and saying "Um, I know you have a headache but could you just answer ONE question?" Well, after the third person asking the fourth question and trying VERY hard to control my temper, I finally had enough. I swept my arm across my desk sending half the paperwork on top of it flying across the room. "The answer is in those papers!! Go find it yourself and for the last time LEAVE ME ALONE when I am getting hit." Mouths dropped and eyes popped and not another word was said. I think they will leave me alone now. DD
