Our Children...

Sometimes, as we all know, life can get really hard.  Almost unbearably hard.  Lately, though, when life gets that way I look at the good and beautiful things I’ve been blessed with and the people in my life that mean so much to me.  Lately, I’ve been observing my niece, Crystal.   Some of you know the story, but I’ve had her since she was 7 months old, she’s 14 year’s old now.

She’s a tough and demanding kid, no question about that and her mood swings during “that time” is enough to make me go crazy, but then there are many nights I come home from work and she’s cleaned the house for me and makes sure I have a cup of tea waiting for me.  This is after she’s put in a full day at school, after school activities, and homework.  If she knows I’m not well, she insists on helping with dinner and cleaning up.  She’s there for whatever I may need, no questions asked.  She even shoveled snow this week and took out the garbage (w/o being told).  We argue one minute and the next moment if I’m in pain, she forgets she told me a minute before “I’ll never speak to you again!” and brings me what I need and won’t leave my side until she knows the beast is gone.    Sometimes her capacity to love unconditionally and her deep level of compassion amazes me.  She told me once that she wants to have a career in either helping old people or animals, as they’re always targets for cruelty because they’re weak and defenseless.  I want to be like her when I grow up.

What can I say - She’s awesome and I don’t have a friggin clue what I’ve done in life to deserve her.

Her best friend’s mom (also my close friend) called me last night to see how I was feeling and to say how sorry she was that I needed Crystal home and she couldn’t go with them to Disney World.  News to me!  It seems Crystal told them that she spoke to me about it and I said she couldn’t go because I needed her.  The tears just flowed then.

Anyway, Crystal doesn’t know it yet, but she’s going to Disney World!  I’m meeting with my friend this weekend to make arrangements for air travel, hotel, whatever she needs for the trip.  She’ll know that week, only because we’ll go shopping for her vacation clothes.  I don’t know how I’ll hold that secret till then (we didn’t tell her best friend or she’ll know yesterday), but I can’t wait to see the look on her face!

Here’s my baby girl (sorry about the tape marks on the pic - It was scanned):

Now I want to hear about your children, grand-children, etc. (however grown they are) …pics please!

That's sooo great, Maria. You know how it is when someone says to us..."Oh those kids are so lucky to have you!" (To those of us who are raising children we did not give birth to) I always have to respond..."NO! How lucky WE are to have THEM!"

Here's a couple pics of me with my baby. She's almost 4 now.

I'm at work right now and if I start talking about her, I'll get nothing done all day.

The short version.... My life changed permanantly for the better the second she was born. She is the light of my life.

My 9 year old son is a lesson on how to fight against the odds.

He was born at 24 weeks gestation (at the time the 337 child born between 24 and 26 weeks) to have ever survived in all of the UK and Ireland. He spent about 10 weeks in intensive care and we watched him dying, surviving and dying again many times. Even watched him being resucitated. Lived through all the agonies of what would happen that day and if he survived what would be the outcome, deaf, blind etc. He fought and fought and fought and made it. 6 months later he came home.
Everyone everywhere was always asking me how he was doing. Lots of people lived the story.
He is winged with mild ataxic cerebal palsey BUT he is a special child because he gives so much love. He has the softest hands and when I am in pain sometimes he puts them on my head. It's a great feeling. He has some trouble walking and speaking but goes to mainstream school and has many friends. He plays the piano and loves his music.
When I am feeling down, his smile puts me on my feet.
He asked me once if he would not have cerebal palsey when he gets older. When I told him he would always have it he said 'oh' in a way like he had dropped a chocolate bar and then just got on with what he was doing.

Wow ET...what an amazing spirit! You are blessed. I often think God sends us children so we can learn from them. Our job is to teach them to conform to the human world and they're here to remind us that it's really all about a lot more than that. Do you have a picture? What's his name?

Well you asked for it here goes...........LOL Between Dave and I we have a total of 7 kids. They dont all live with us. His 2 oder boys live with us and Dave & I have Mykee together.
My kids by no means are the best they have their moments I want to KILL. But when Dave is dealing with the beast, John (almost 16) and Daniel 14 grab Mykee (2) and take him up stairs to play so I can get my battle gear on to help Dave. They are good kids all of them are. They clean, they cook, school and church what ever they do its always 110%. When Im dealin with life and it tosses me a curve ball, they are right there to do what ever needs done. They put them selves on hold to help me. I love my boys. They are there with out ? and I stive to do the same for them. My boys are my life. They have brought so much in to making this house a HOME.
Great thread Langa, BTW Crystal is beatiful. THANK YOU!!
Leesa  Grin

PS: pics of my kids can been seen over on last years convention pics, I have NO clue how to post pics yet. LOL Roll Eyes

Thanks for the pics guys…

Thanks for sharing your wonderful story of your son ET…It bought a smile to my face.  Crystal was also a premature birth, not as premature as your son though. She weighed almost 4 pounds at 7 months.  Many times my niece puts her small hands on my head and prays.  I just told her what I did about posting her pic here and bragging about her…she’s completely mortified…and being the typical teenager she wanted to make sure I posted a good picture of her that doesn’t show the nearly invisible pimple you need a magnifying glass to see…LOL.
