Since using this OS I can not use any of the software for periphialsPlu ins (Whatever).

Currently I have a camera, card reader, scanner, and printer that I can not use.

Any suggestions?

This issue, spam and spyware is what keeps Sys Admins employed these days.

I just tried to use an older scanner and ran into the same problem. Solution for the scanner....purchase updated interface software from the scanner manuf. [Umax]

In many cases, the peripheral manuf. will provide updated drivers/interface software at no charge. These are generally found on the manuf. web site(s) and downloaded free of charge.

Hope this helps,

Also, if a program hasn't been tested by MS to run with XP, you'll get a warning message when you go to install the software.  It will tell you that it's not approved and may nuke your system.  I've loaded the stuff anyway and it works fine.  Some software suppliers will even tell you to ignore the warning when loading thier software.

Yup. I've got that warning but terminated the installation.

Just tried continuing with the program installation anyway and successfully downloaded and installed the printer software.

Remember that different drivers are sometimes  necessary for WinXP, WinXP sp1, and WinXP sp2, so get drivers for the version you are running.

Just thought I'd mention that not all digital cameras need their software/drivers installed prior to using them.  XP includes many of the most popular drivers preinstalled, and therefore just need the camera connected to the 'puter to download the pics.  If your camera can emulate a USB storage device, you won't even need any photo software.  If your camera uses removeable media for storage, buy a media card reader compatible with the cards that your camera uses (I find this is actually easier and quicker than pluggin' my camera into the 'puter most times.)

I know this may be a stupid question... If the media card reader is USB... Have you just tried plugin' it in and seein' if it'll read the media card without installing any software/drivers and checking "My Computer" to see if a new removeable storage drive has been added?

What brand and model is the card reader and scanner?  Perhaps I could try to find a trick to get 'em working in XP...

Don,

Pop in your Knoppix CD ( I know you have one), reboot, when the desktop comes up, plug in your scanner and card reader and see what happens. Your card reader will probably pop up on the desktop, and you can run Sane, to try your scanner ( it is hidden in graphics I believe). If you like what you see I will send you the new version of Xandros ( it just came out ) and you can install it on your old computer. I am assuming you got a new one and didn't actually down grade win98 to winXP. If you did a clean install may help, of win98 that is.
