I posted the following over on the OUCH site, but I thought it might get even more visible or possibly even be more useful if I post it here, too! 
If anyone is interested in seeing the work I've done so far for my honors project on improving headache education for nurses, please let me know.
This week, I plan to hand out pre-surveys to my nursing class to see "what we know" about any headache/migraine disorders from the education we were given when we covered these topics in class.
Then, I believe in a couple of weeks (if all goes well...) I will be either verbally presenting my power point general presentation on "Migraine and Headache 101" to the class, as well as handing out the power point slides for added memory recall. I will also run a post-survey to evaluate the effectiveness of the presentation.
The second part of the project is what needs the bulk of the work still. I have written up well over 30 medications as prototypes used for preventatives, abortives, and rescue meds for all headache types. This packet contains the usual indications, mechanism of action, adverse effects, interactions, and nursing implications of each and every drug included.
Because our curriculum is broken down into classes on pathophysiology, med/surg, and pharmacology, I'm rewriting my "general" presentation into 3 separate presentations so that they can *hopefully* include it into the curriculum in the way it is structured here at Jefferson.
So far, I've had extremely positive feedback here at Jefferson. I've been mostly working with non-headache nurses through school, etc. However, even the feedback I got from the few people I shared the presentation with at the headache center was very positive. Two of the people I sent it to at the center even offered suggestions for corrections of my general presentation.
I will be presenting this in a poster presentation on May 23, 2005 as part of our 2 day graduation schedule. One of the nurses I work with in maternity told me that I should get my resources a little more fine-tuned and then submit the entire thing for publication because there really hasn't been a project like this on headache education for nurses done in such a way. That was pretty exciting. I'm not really sure how to go about that, but I should have the resources to find out.
At the very least, I'd like to enter the poster into conferences to see if they will accept it as a poster presentation. Some nursing based, possibly some education based, and maybe even some neuro/headache based if I get really lucky!
Granted, the project covers all types of headaches and is not CH specific, and I can never go as in depth as we would want, or the project would never be done. However, I think it is an excellent education presentation for nurses. I got tired of being in the hospital and every single person who walked into my room would say, "Wow.. What's a cluster headache?" LOL So I got busy with the project!
Headache education will be forever a part of my job description even though I am no longer planning to work in that area of nursing, as I'm going into neonatal nursing. However, it is a topic I obviously hold very close to my own heart, and I will continue to educate one person at a time for the rest of my life!
So, if you're interested in the presentation, just let me know...so far, I can at least forward along the general presentation...and even the surveys if you really want to see them, although I have to retype a couple of questions on them.
I just ask that you please not use it for your own purposes at this time, as I have not officially presented it for school. I have no "rights" claimed on the presentation yet, but it has been a lot of work on my part, and I don't really want it just floating around without my permission!

This is fabulous! Definitely submit the posters!
It is something that is much needed and will be very useful to lots of people when you finish, not just nurses.

Great! I'm glad some of you are interested. I have 2 people who asked me to email them what I have so far. I will get around to that very soon!!
Today in class, I ran my pre-survey. I found it to be very interesting!! Here is a summary of what I found:
Total Surveyed: 41 students
Question #1: The vast majority felt we spent less than or equal to 1 hour on the topic of headaches/migraine.
Question #2: The topics covered the most (with 41 being the highest score) were
Migraine w or w/o aura: 41
Cluster HA: 38
Tension-Type HA: 36
Medications...category is broken down...
Topics not covered in class, but will be covered with MY presentation: Basilar Artery Migraine, Hemiplegic Migraine, Migraine Equivalents, Menstrual Migraine, Allodynia, Migrainous Stroke, Status Migrainosus, Rebound (How this can occur, How to treat rebound), Chronic Daily Headache (Transformed Migraine, Chronic Tension-type HA, New Daily Persistent HA, Hemicrania Continua)
Question #3... On a scale of 1-5, with 1 being most competent and 5 being least competent in nursing for those with headaches (either acute or chronic) - most students rated themselves at a 3 (25), 9 students rated a 4, 7 students rated a 2, and 0 students rated a 1 or 5.
Question #4... Should more emphasis be placed on headache education for nurses?
Yes: 23
No: 9
Other: 8
No response: 1
Question #5... Would better HA education for nurses improve patient outcomes?
Yes: 30
Maybe: 3
No: 4
Other: 4
And...I had quite a few interesting verbal responses!! The funniest one to me was in response to question one. The student wrote: "1 1/2 hours and Carrie's stories" That same student also said that we do not need more education for nurses on HA's, and they also said that better education for nurses would NOT improve patient outcomes for HA's. I'm pretty certain I know who's survey that is, too!
The biggest issues for me to discuss is that better headache education for nurses does not need to take more class time (we are in an accelerated program) - it simply needs to be more up-to-date, accurate, etc.
Also...where are headache patients found? EVERYWHERE!!! It is not just neuro nurses who need knowledge about headaches. You can find a patient with headaches in any area of medicine...
So...I just did the excel graphs, etc, and now I'm working on a power-point presentation related to the pre-survey!
More to come as the project continues....
