Dental implants--Non CH

Just wondering here about anyone's experience in dental implants. Any thoughts and information (ie costs, etc) would be appreciated. Hate to hock to house for this!

My wife had a tooth implanted. It was a long process, but I think it was worth it. If I remember correctly, it cost just a bit more than a bridge, and it saved the two teet on wither side of the one needing replacement. And, the dentist said that a bridge would almost certainly have to be replaced after 10-15 years, whereas the implant is a lifetime thing.
For Sarah it was: Pull old tooth. Since bone was depleted in that area, she waited six months for enough bone to regenerate to anchor the screw. Then they drill a titanium screw into her jaw, wait like six months for the bone to grow around it, so that it is permanent, and then mold a tooth to fit over the top of it. Then they snap it on. The whole thing took over a year, but it was worth it. It might be different now, this was like 3 years ago.
The problem with Sarah's was that, even though it wasn't supposed to, hers fell off. So, we had it permanently glued in place. It doesn't bother her at all. Just like a normal tooth.

Thanks so much Clarence. I fractured two teeth beneath the gum line and have to do something. I have a couple of options which I am weighing.
I hate to part with the kind of money they're talking about, but have probably no choice.

Implants are the best way to go if you can afford it. They will run anywhere between $900-$1200 depending were you live. And that is the cost of the implant alone. You will also need a post and a crown. Post will run you about $250 and the crown anywhere from $750-$1200 again depending where you live. Insurance will not cover the cost of the implant but most will cover part of the cost of the post and crown.
The implant it self is not hard and the post op pain is not as bad as you would think. Depending on if it is on the upper or lower arch it will have to sit for 3-6 months, before they will put the crown on it.
If you do a permanent Bridge to replace the teeth, each unit will cost you between $750 - $1200. So if you broke 2 teeth, and if they are next to each other you will need at least a 4 unit bridge.
A removable appliance to replace the two teeth will cost about $1500-$2000. If at all possible don't do this opinion. Yes it will work to replace the teeth, but if you do this the insurance company will not cover to have anything else done in this area. And wearing the appliance will wear down the bone in the area.

Thanks Bec and Jimmy. I had the impression that one tooth ended up costing about 4-5 thousand dollars. The dentist is a friend of mine for a number of years. Maybe he'll cut me a break. I have no dental insurance.
