Sanctuary Lost

I lay sleeping in the cool winter night
drifting away slowly and peacefully to another place and time.
I see the woods where I walked as a child.
There in the center of the woods the largest oak stands
It's great trunk like a Greek column holding up my temple of solitude.
Many times I came here as a boy when life tossed me about.
I sit once again beneath it's mighty branches
and let the cares of this life fade away.
Just as I feel the peace returning to my soul,
an unseen beast rips the tapestry of my dreams and throws me from my bed.
He sinks a burning claw into my head.
I writhe in pain and scream for release.
If death be my only escape, oh God, bring it to me swiftly.
But God turns a deaf ear to my pleas.
I curse my maker for ever allowing me to be born.
Time passes slowly.
Seconds seem like minutes.
Minutes like hours.
I bang my head and pound my fists into the floor as I cry out in agony.
Then as awakening from a nightmare, my torturer retreats as quickly as he came,
leaving me battered and bruised, but alive.
I wonder how long can I continue to fight this war against my unseen enemy.
Then I look up and see my wife's face and feel her hands upon my shoulders.
Her voice soothing as a springtime shower as it falls over me and gives me strength to get up and face the night once more.
I realize, God has heard my pleas.
Out of the depths of my despair he has heard and sent an angel to help me carry my burden.
In bed once more I lie, drifting yet again to my childhood sanctuary.
But off in the distance, I hear a monstrous cry as my pursuer nears once more.
I am saddened to know I'll never find peace here again.
