General skills test (W/out pics)

I'm still working on notseinfeld's pic skill test.

Here's another sorta math skill test............don't know if I should laugh or cry at it's message

Last week I purchased a burger for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register.
I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried.

Why do I tell you this?

Please read more about the "history of teaching math skills":

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1960
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1970
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

Teaching Math In 1980
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

Teaching Math In 1990
By cutting down beautiful forest trees, the logger makes $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the forest birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down the trees. (There are no wrong answers.)

It really irritates me when (no offense meant to anyone here) I go to an ATM in America where the official language is STILL English and I have to choose between Spanish and English. This is America!!!!! I speak English!!!!!! Give me a break.

Now, teachers almost HAVE to be bi-lingual because people who decided this country is good enough to live in don't think they need to learn our language. So now their kids don't know the language either and can't be taught. So next, they expect us to hire more people to teach the children of people who refused to learn the language in the first place. In a lot of these cases, it is for people who aren't even paying taxes to support this. (Again... No offense meant...)

I'm beginning to rant...... I'll stop. oops

I recognize how frustrating this can be for teachers, but no matter what the first language is, the children have the inherent right to a good education. Spanish is just one of the languages spoken by immigrants.

If I moved to a different country, I wouldn't expect their government to bend over backwards for my English speaking family.

I would have the courtesy of learning the official language of what ever country I chose to live in and then teaching it to my children.

Ahem,

Did you know that the US constitution does not mention an official language?

Quite some Spanish speaking countries were conquered/annexed by the USA. Could be your forefathers forgot to kill off all people that spoke a "foreign" language.

Maybe someone should post a skill test in history.

IMHO, it is the ultimate climax of conceit to complain about the fact that someone provides for several languages and forces you to choose. (I wonder where the expression of the "Ugly American" comes from  Shocked)

Probably coined by a "Jealous European" who couldn't bear the fact that a nation born of undesirables and outcasts have been responsible for so many advances in Government and technology over the past 200 years.  And whose poor people live better than most middle class Europeans.

No.  I don't know the percentages but a lot of those poor Europeans speak more than one language. That's a good thing you know.

Eons ago, when I was 11, our class was introduced to a smattering of Spanish. It was fun and I should have pursued it. Latin hasn't been all that useful to me but it's all over the place too.

English is the most useful language here and it's best to use it if you can. Bilingual notices and information exist because business wants it, and it saves lawsuits, not because we're so damn thoughtful.

That's all fine and well, Charlie.  But it burns my ass when everybody everywhere in the world treats us like crap, except for a few exceptions (The U.K., Canda, Mexico.)  And when something happens and they need help, they come crawling with their hands out and we are expected to give money.  Yes it is a world economy and we should all help each other, but don't degrade those who help the MOST!  That is just B.S. in anybody's eyes.  Or at least it should be.

Ueli; any advances we made in technology are fleeting; especially now that the current bunch of puritans encourage everything but science and critical thinking.

The U. S. has been falling behind for some time. It's been forty years since American kids were encouraged by JFK and the New Frontier. What we call outsourcing is more than just money now; we don't make it any more attractive to work here than anywhere else.

We spend too much time preaching about the good old days and no longer benefit from a brain drain.

Refridgerators, running water and toilet paper.  Something almost everyone here has.  Yes Charlie I KNOW we are falling behind and have been for years, it has something to do with not rewarding excellence in our public shools.  Back when you failed a kid for not reaching the academic standards of the time and rewarded those who did, we had a brain drain.  Now that we ostracize those who would excell and pamper those who can/will not meet the standards, while dropping the standards to accomodated the lowest level of achievement.  We have brilliant students who are not being challenged during the time when their minds are the ripest for learning.  Dumbing down is a real thing and it is a very real problem.  To me it is the MOST important issue facing voters of this generation, but does anybody bring it up?  The answer is a resounding NO!  The reason for that is the teacher's union.  The poor overworked underpaid teachers.  They get no respect, they don't feel safe in their work environment.  They are too busy trying to discipline children that are disruptive, they can't get any teaching done.  And if the could get any teaching done, what would they be productive?  Again with the NO answer.  They are the ones who made it illegal for us to discipline our children at home, they have taken it on themselves to tout their own values on our children, instead of the values of the parents.  What on earth does that have to do with education?  NOTHING!!!!!!!!  Go back to teaching the 3 R's and You will see a strong, smart and respectfull American citizen again.  There I've gone and ranted my brains out and it's still early.

Thomas, have you ever spent a whole day in a public school classroom? I urge everyone who blames educational issues solely on teachers to do so. It's an eye opening experience. Not to say there aren't bad teachers...but it's much more complex a problem then some would have you believe.   nani

because - if you reward excellence - you make the "other" children "feel bad" that THEY didn't get honors too.

and it makes me sick.   they dont want to make the other children feel bad ........... political correct schooling.....

they dont fail kids and keep them back - because if what it might do to their self esteem.    Dont worry about what it will do to them next year when they cant keep up.

i will go now - i do not wanna get started.........

No, I never went to school, can't you tell by my poor grammar?  BTW did you not read what I said about allowing parents to discipline their children and let families worry about teaching values and cultural issues.  But the simple fact of the matter is that a graduating senior has less grammatical power than a sixth grader from the 1950's.  So you tell me who is to blame.  I'm sorry I am working too damn hard to pay taxes, which pays teachers salaries and also their union dues, to go home at night and teach children how to read, I'm already paying some one else TO DO THAT!
