I need some help...

Clark's 40th Birthday is in March, and he has always talked about getting a metal detector but the cost was prohibitive. I've decided he needs something special for the special year, and I want to get him one. As I searched for different models it became apparent that one needs to know alot about them. Do any of you own one or can anyone give me any info on which kind to buy and what to steer away from?? Cat

I could lend you my grandkids. (my kids are paper and plastic detectors) Every time they hear metal clanking around in my pockets....they grab it. They are very sensitive detectors and can hear a quarter drop in another room and their batteries never seem to wear out. Initial cost isn't bad but it's the upkeep I tell ya..it's the upkeep. Bobw

Bottle collectors and antique collectors use them all the time. No one I know has anything fancy. All I know is that there are some pretty fancy ones out there. I have no real knowledge though. Wish I could help more. Charlie

For any 'specialized' gear such as that, my wife just lets me know that she is getting me one, but I must select the exact model. That eliminates part of the surprise, of course, but also all of the disappointment of receiving the wrong item. If he has spoken about getting one, you can be certain that he already has 'the one' in mind. We geeks like selecting our own gear. Research is 80% of the fun.

| So now we have excellent suggestions as well as advice from the village idiot. Some will not return something for fear of offending their better half. Your buying something will also impose an percieved $$$ limit on his selection. Plus the odds of your buying one at a place that has the model that he wants is slim... I would guess one would resort to the net for such specialized purchases. Donny... thought you were in Vegas today? Get your ass to the bus station and mount your Greyhound.

hehe well Clark has no problems exchanging a gift I've bought for him, and he doesn't worry about the $$$ limit since he's the one that makes it I am fairly sure he doesn't know anything about them either, except that he wants one that shows what you've found i.e. a coin or a deck screw. The prices I've found on them range from $150 to however much you want to spend. His birthday is a bit of a sensitive issue to him, so it's better to surprise him with it, then let him return it if it isn't the one he wants than to tell him to buy one himself. I just didn't realize there was so much involved with the things. Wow, you need a degree to figure out what each one does! Cat

The two I would look at is a Garret or a whites There web site is garret.com and whiteselectronics.com however check out Ebay because alot of folks buy them then the alure wears off I bought my first whites in 1971 it is a coin master.and still works. But the new ones are alot better finding hidden treasures is a hoot Boonie
