Need NECH Feedback..

Hey all,

I'm looking into setting up an appointment at NECH.  It will just be temporary for now because I'm still waiting for my dad to make the phone call to my current neuro, and some other stuff has to happen, but I figure it can't hurt to set up the appointment.

So in the meantime...can anyone give me positive or negative feedback on NECH who has been there?  Is Dr. Sheftell the best person to go see?  I know all 3 docs there have good reputations, but it seems Dr. Sheftell does a lot with clusters.  One of my good friends goes to see Dr. Rappoport I think.

Any other feedback you can provide would be most excellent. Smiley  Thanks!

Awww tried to call, but they are closed on Fridays.  I will call back on Monday.  It is not that far from here, and also right up the road from where my mom grew up in New Canaan.  Smiley  I'm excited about a new change!

Any of the 3 docs there are good to see.  Dr. Tepper tends to be the one that does the most in terms of patients and appt's.  Dr's Sheftell and Rapoport do see patients but tend to do more of the science/research part of things and often are out of the office to speak or attend conferences.

Again, all 3 are very good and all 3 are very very knowledgeable when it comes to clusters, I've met with all 3 of them, and saw Dr. Tepper as patient.

Dr. Bigal doesn't see patients but heads up the research, and Dr. Volcy is there on a fellowship so I'm not sure if he sees patients on his own or with one of the other docs. (He sat in with Dr. Tepper for my appt).

Hope that helps.  They are well worth the money and the time.

Thank you both Cat and Kev...and for those who sent me PM's.  That is very helpful.

So far, I'm feeling really positive that this could be a good change.

I was very interested in what Dr. Volcy said about their preventative use of Amerge over the summer at NashCon.  When I printed out the studies and showed them to people where I am currently treated, they said "no way, no how."  And it was dropped.

However, I know Amerge works in a preventative fashion for me because when I take it...it kicks in about 2 hours later...and then prevents headaches for up to 6 hours or so...and drops the baseline significantly, even though I still have a migraine the entire time.  I tend not to get as many clusters a night on the days I take Amerge.  I would love to just have the chance to try this...if nothing else!!

We'll see Smiley  Thanks again for the input!!

There was a time when when Cat spent countless hours working with NECH incorporating them as a medical affiliate for OUCH.

OUCH once again dropped the ball.

NECH is highly recommended.

Do you know if there is a way to find out what insurance plans they take before I call them on Monday?  I know sometimes you can find it online.  I have a Blue Cross plan that is based out of Philly, and I have this sinking feeling they won't accept it.  I can't afford to pay out of pocket.

I have had a couple of excellent recommendations for wonderful doctors...one who actually is listed as a headache specialist at Jefferson.  I used to go to another doctor in his practice before switching to the headache center in 2001.  The other used to be the chair of Jefferson's department of neurology but is now at Hahnemann Hospital which is right up the street.  Apparently he is very caring and kind, and if he couldn't help then he would be very honest about it and would send me to who he thought was best.  He probably wouldn't just redirect me to the headache center since he did not leave Jefferson on good terms and took half the practice with him.  Interesting...!

These are other options I am getting around Philly just in case NECH does not accept my insurance.  I would still reallllly like to go up there, but I can't pay out of pocket!  We'll see!  Hopefully I can call tomorrow! Smiley

I don't remember which insurances they do take, but it's only 2 or 3 that they accept.

If you give them a call they will tell you what insurances up front.

The cost of the initial visit for me was about $450 because I didn't go through the entire process.  I think the initial visit is around $600 though.  They do ALOT of stuff in that visit, and even though I had to pay out of my own pocket, it was worth EVERY penny.

Sad Unfortunately they do not accept my insurance, so I will begin calling tomorrow or Tuesday to find a new neurologist in the Philadelphia area who will take my case.  Ugh...  Guess this won't be as easy as I might have wished!  But then...the last year and a half has been so horrid that I definitely still have to make the leap and find a new doc.

Ah well...

Still thanks for the advice Smiley
