Laptop question: sound trouble

I've had my share of problems with my HP omnibook xe4500 laptop. The latest is with the sound: these days the only sounds I hear are those which come with DVDs or are programmed to run when I open some website.

But I can't listen to CDs nor the songs I've downloaded nor none of the songs/videos/etc one can downdoad from websites. And this bothers me a lot!

I have noticed this since I updated my programmes with Microsoft Office, which included PowerPoint, which I didn't have before. One of my flatmates said that the problem can be related to PowerPoint. Do you think that I could solve it by simply erasing PowerPoint...? Or could this problem be caused by something else? Any ideas?

I'm going to let some experts see my laptop once I don't have so many homework to do every day. But for the time being I have deadlines everyday, so I can't take it to computer store.

Best wishes & PFdays,
Sandie

Forgive me if this is a stupid suggestion:

Down on your tray (in the lower right) do you have a speaker icon?
Double click on that.
Is 'Wave' muted or set with low volume?

If that icon is missing, do Control Panel/Sound & Audio Devices/Advanced.  Check 'Wave' as mentioned above.
From that screen, also check on 'Place volume icon on the taskbar' to put that little speaker down there.

It's not muted nor on low volume, unfourtainly. That was the first thing I checked... I was hoping that it would be just that... It would have made my life a lot easier.... Undecided
