Highland Chapel

Written just yesterday. Thank you to Rori (Lionsound) for her critique and assistance.

Highland Chapel

Rocky highland plain dotted with tiny yellow flowers
Narrow path leads me out of primeval forest to the stone
steps and oaken doors of this ancient chapel.
A single shaft of autumn sunlight
like the kiss of God
warms the stone floor and is then shrouded by
heavy clouds pregnant with rain.

Bathed in candlelight, the great twisted oak tree that grows
where a pulpit once stood, stretches and reaches to
lose itself in the inky darkness of the high rafters.

Night after night
I have come here in solitude
seeking sanctuary
praying for solace
spread prostrate on the floor
fingers gripping the gnarled roots and weeping anguished
tears running like rivers to the darkness below...

Secret roots of my heart growing ever deeper
plunging into rich black soil and
sending branches soaring to Heaven, that
angels may recline in their shade...

Thanks, Charlie. Smiley It's a place I go inside, when I'm in pain, sad, or soul-weary... Just before I drift off to sleep, I go there, engaging every sense that I possibly can; envisioning every detail... I've been going there since I was 15 years old. It's also where I go to withdraw from the pain of a cluster attack.
