Just sparing a moment for the over 10 million genocide victims of the Holocaust as it is Rembrance week here.
January 27th is the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the extermination and concentration camps and it is the greatest opportunity to show our respect for the survivors of Nazi persecution and mass murder, and to listen to what they can tell us about the best and the worst of human behaviour.
I have watched more unwatchable moments this week on television than I can bear, but they must be watched.
I have heard more terrible testimonials from parents who had their children taken from them and murdered, and children who never saw their parents again than I can bear to hear. More stories of the worst a man can do to another man, and as bad, more people justifying what they did, even now, than I thought it was possible to hear.
Beyond words............
If it is something you know nothing about, please take some time out to find out. Only then is there any chance that this generation and the next won't do it again.
I'm getting off my soapbox now.

You are right, terrible terrible things happend and its wrong to allow them to be forgotten or allow people to trivialise them. The facts are there and they must be remembered so it just can't happen again. Thanks for posting it Wendy.

I'm hoping that the survivors that speak to school audiences have a way to keep things on a front burner. We had a few speak to us when I was in school. It's a damn good idea.

Hey Wendy and thanks for the reminder. I'm a sort of WWII addict. I keep thinking if i look over my shoulder and in front at the same time, i'll learn what is required to make it STOP. Unfortunately, around the world it continues ...........(another discussion perhaps).
Read these:
"In Our Strange Garden" by Michel Quint. it is a small GIANT of a story about two cousins in France during French Resistance. In this story, the family goes to the cinema to watch a movie entitled "Das Bruque" (i think...) German for Bridge???. It tells the tale of a famous battle takes place on a bridge and is told from the young German soldiers point of view. At first, i did not want to think about that. But then I did. After all is argued out and disagreed upon with guns, there is still young boys. From around the world. If i am to understand why it is that i support the boys i live with, i thought it might be interesting to hear from boys that i do NOT live with or near....
in any event it is history and worth a peek.
I still think that in order for me to raise my children to the future, we must have a good look over our shoulders. We must try and live life in a way that embraces ..............i don't know if we can.

............and to remember always that no side is always in the right, and no side always in the wrong. The Nazi atrocities are beyond our understanding and probably (hopefully) will remain without parallel in history, but the French did a deal with the Nazi's to hand over Jewish children in France and they were separated from their parents, even the tiniest ones, kept in squalor in camps in France, then transported and gassed en masse at Treblinka.
Good post Kim.
"All Quiet on the Western Front" is a great book about WW1 but shows exactly what you say, the German soldiers were confused, scared boys too.
Another wonderful book is "If this is a Man" by Primo Levi who was a concentration camp survivor. This is one of the most thought provoking books I have ever read, particularly where he describes the inhumanity of some of the prisoners, not just the guards.

We have survivors giving talks at schools at the moment, but this cannot go on much longer of course as most of those talking now are old and were children then. Very few adult witnesses are left.

The biggest danger is that the Nazi holocaust becomes objectified and abstract, tucked away in the past, labeled uniquely other, an educational/emotional experience that does nothing to prevent future mass slaughters.
NEVER AGAIN ... except that it is already too late. Since 1945, genocide in Rwanda, the USSR, Darfur, China, Cambodia, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Guatemala, etc etc.

As a Jewish person from a mixed race family all three group suffering from genocide I thank you all for these posts. And Floridian you are awesome. Very true. And thanks to who started this post acknowledging that 10 million died in the Holocaust six million gentiles as well As Jews. I love the book the Hiding Place. Shows you some hope in the world. The Ten Boom Family lives in my heart and all the other righteous Gentiles.
