Potassium ?

What is it about bananas that makes them a trigger? Is it the high levels of potassium in bananas? Yesterday a couple guys here said high doses of verapamil causes constipation in a bad way. I haven't had that problem yet but I'm stepping up my Verap doseage. So, I got prune juice. The label on Sunsweet 100% prune juice says "Did you know that a serving of Sunsweet prune juice contains more potassium than an average banana ?" Uh oh, I'd rather not be a guinea pig on this. Bob

I'm not sure why bananas would be recommended to help with the Verapamil poop problem. Fact is, they're really not that high in fiber compared to most fruits & veggies. I vote for "little green apples", prunes or metamucil. I also found great luck with a daily stool softener (not laxative). Jonny is immune to most problems because he is "king." Fact is, the rest of us peons often suffer from the Verap constipation thing. Kris

Forget it, it's not the potassium in bananas that makes them a trigger. Found this on the net: "Many people think of bananas when they think of potassium, and for good reason. One medium banana packs 450 mg. But potatoes actually top bananas in potassium content: a medium baked potato or 20 French fries have 750 mg. Other good sources include cantaloupe (500 mg per cup), beet greens (650 mg per one-half cup cooked), spinach, winter squash and Swiss chard (all around 450 mg per one-half cup cooked). And don't overlook the common bean. One-half cup of cooked lima beans tips the potassium scale at 475 mg; pinto and black beans dish out 400 mg potassium per half-cup serving."

Bananas also contain serotonin - I think around 3 mg each, depending on variety and degree of ripeness. One person on this board a month ago said that bananas seemed to prevent for him. Very ripe bananas can contain ethanol and methanol in a dose that might be enough to trigger some people. Then there are all those perfumey chemicals in a ripe banana - ethyl acetate, etc. Its really a question of finding what bothers you.
