Plaah! Not great. But remakes usual suck. Horror movie fans will prolly find it entertaining. And the CGI is impressive. They did an OK job of retaining the non-linear story line. And the cast is passable, although Jason Behr is just annoying. My main grudge with THE GRUDGE? Why the fark did they change the ending?? Even though Takashi Shimizu (a protégé of Kiyoshi Kurosawa!), who was the director of JU-ON, directed the US remake, it falls kind of flat, although it was not the suck-fest that VALENTINE and DARKNESS FALLS were. If you want scare-the-crap-outta-me-goodness, the original, JU-ON: THE GRUDGE, is the way to go. There is nothing like a Japanese horror film. I agree with the C+ because of the sad, sad Americanization of a wonderful film. But JU-ON gets a solid A!! Check it out! Hirvimaki-Isi

In a flip-flop: The Japanese version of "The Ring," really sucked, but the American version's storyline and background was a lot more developed. Interesting... I'd rather see the Japanese version of "The Grudge."

| My boyfriend and I were recently talking about something similar. We were watching the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre. We decided it wasn't as scary as the old one because remember the sound of those old gas powered chainsaws? That's the scary part!!! The new movie has the electric chainsaws and it does not instill the same fear! We also watched Godzilla vs. Mothera. It was a Japanese film, and I have to say....I was not a fan, although I have loved Mothera since I saw it when I was a kid. Weird! Lizzie2/Carrie

| I agree. The US version of THE RING was told with much more skill than the original Japanese version and it was much easier to follow and generally made more sense. And really it just looked better. I do think it lacked the creep-out-factor of the original. The tape, the girl, the well... all were done much more frighteningly in the original film. Hirivmaki-Isi

| Really? I only ever saw the American version and I'd have to say that the tape and girl scared me out of my mind. I cannot watch that movie alone!

If ya like horror, then check out ONE MISSED CALL (Chakushin ari) by Takashi Miike. It is very much in the tradition of THE RING and THE GRUDGE. The plot is similar to THE RING. A cell phone rings. (A very creepy ringtone.) The missed call is dated 3 days in the future. The voice message is from the owner of the cell phone, saying something odd then screaming out in terror. Then three days later, no matter what the person does, they find themselves repeating what they said and then dying in grotesque and frightening ways. Not as good as JU-ON, but it gives it a run for the money! You can see a trailer for it here: http://www.chakuari.jp/web/ Hirvimaki-Isi

Nice!! Adding another one to the list... I used to watch creepy Chinese ghost stories, too. They were almost never gory, and never relied on sudden surprises to scare their viewers. They relied on atmosphere, lighting, photography, and good storytelling. Deliciously spooky, creepy stuff... Haunting....
