And now for something different...

Written last Halloween. Bad Seed I am the fetus who killed his twin while yet en utero and then strangled purposely on the umbilical cord to poison you as a floating malignancy on the sea of amniotic fluid, shooting gray infection through your belly and breasts. You buried me surreptitiously by moonlight in the dank soil of the garden. I grew throughout that sweltering, rainless summer, sprouting out of the parched ground in a long, fibrous tendril that opened a single violet blossom. I listened to you remarking how everything but this one plant had died, and how odd the bloom was. I am the shiny, poisonous-looking fruit that hung bloated and deadly, the one that made you shudder, just to look upon. And then I plunged myself deep into the earth yet again. Growing, growing, growing.... You stayed away from the garden all summer, telling yourself that you weren’t really afraid, but that there was no sense in visiting a dead garden after all... And yet, I watched you worrying through the kitchen window during those long, still afternoons filled with slow thunderheads. I heard your dreams, and drank myself dizzy from your fear and loathing. And just last night, the first night that the frost killed the shrieking cicadas and turned the irises black, I emerged from the soil, shaking it from my hair and shoulders, lapping it from my sharp teeth and spitting it in a hissing arc, into the well. The red moon was dying, choking to death on its own blood, and I, with a triumphant shout, kicked down your door to stand over your bed, grinning wildly, roaring in a dirt-thickened voice, "HELLO, MOTHER!" -Frank H. Weeden
