Hallucinogens and CHs

Have any of you cluster-headache sufferers used hallucinogens before getting the headaches? I used LSD and magic mushrooms when I was younger quite a bit, and the year after I quit using those drugs, in 1978, I had my first cycle of cluster headaches (of course, they were not diagnosed as such until many years later). Since a study will be done on whether mushrooms or acid can break up a CH cycle, there does seem to be a link between CHs and hallucinogens. I wonder if having used the drugs previously set some type of seratonin flow out of whack, bringing on the CH cycles (they occur every couple of years) once I quit using those strong drugs. Of course, many CH sufferers never used hallucinogens previously, but I'd be interested to know, of those who did, whether their experiences mirror mine at all. Rgds. Andrew

Never used any illegal drug, stronger then "Pot" and I have clusters....so either I'm one of the few or it blows that theory out of the water. or someone slipped some "blotter" in my drink when I wasn't looking. Grin

Also, I started my clusters when I was 14...about 2 to 3 years before I even tried "Pot".

perhaps your use at the time was keeping them away, and when you stopped, CH proceeded.

My clusters started before my "experimental" years.

I doubt it there is a causative connection, otherwise you'd have seen a lot of oxygen tanks (instead of nitrous) at Grateful Dead shows.

And after you started experimenting, did that delay or eliminate cycles which you believe you may normally have experienced otherwise? Thanks.

In retrospect, I'd have to guess yes.

These personal histories on the use of hallucinogens and possible effects on CH cycles are interesting -- we're getting a jump on the Harvard study here! I apologize for raising the topic in two message boards, but thought it was being missed in the Harvard study board (where I first raised the topic) which hadn't been used in a while.

I used tons of acid before getting ch.  I quit tripping and went off all drugs.  About 4 years latter I got hit with cluster headaches for the first time and was chronic.  I doubt if it is related.

Hi, and thanks for responding.
I am curious to know whether there is a higher proportion of those who used hallucinogens among CH people than among the general population. No way to find out unless a serious study is done, of course. Regards.
